WTF Happened to OLIVER STONE?

  • One of the most controversial directors to emerge from the 1980s is definitely Oliver Stone. A Vietnam vet with a strong political bent, he first plied his trade as a screenwriter on movies such as 1978’s Midnight Express, 1983’s Scarface and 1985’s Year of the Dragon, before moving into directing with two masterpieces that came out within months of each other, the James Woods fact-based thriller Salvador (1986) and the stone-cold Vietnam classic Platoon.
From there, his career kicked into high gear, with him known for casting a critical eye at some of the most controversial events and personalities of modern times. His best movies include 1988’s Wall Street (which won an Oscar for star Michael Douglas), 1989’s Born of the Fourth of July (which proved to people just how outstanding an actor Tom Cruise could be), 1991’s The Doors and JFK (still perhaps his most controversial film), 1994’s Natural Born Killers, 1999’s Any Given Sunday and many, many more.
While his output has slowed in recent years, Stone’s as prolific as ever; he’s just turned his attention to documentaries such as The Putin Interviews and JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass. Join us as we take a deep dive into his remarkable career on this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity.

Whenever the topic of tragically recently forgotten Great American Filmmakers comes up, I always cite Oliver Stone. It can't be understated how important he is to late-20th century American cinema.
Mapping the evolution of his cinematic grammar from "Salvador" to "World Trade Center" (where he finally recedes back into traditional visual storytelling) is one of the most interesting journeys a cinema lover can take.
He's one of our Great American Filmmakers, period.

It's definitely a challenging, flawed film.
In my opinion, Stone's failure was his casting. If feel Val Kilmer, Jared Leto, and Angelina Jolie, among others, were all woefully miscast.
I even think Anthony Hopkins' performance is pretty stilted.
Stone's script and especially his camera are on point (that first battle with the Persians is pretty brilliant) but there's only so much he can achieve if the actors onscreen are not delivering.
I'll always have a bit of unconditional respect for "Alexander" though. I love the audacity of Stone making a violent, manly action picture where the warrior protagonist is a weepy mommy's boy with a crush on one of his generals. In 2004? In George W. Bush's America? lol...ballsy.

@andrion waser Why? I’m Greek myself and I’m genuinely curious as to why people have such a big problem with it. Did you want them to have fake Greek accents? They’d sound ridiculous. This argument only holds up if the alternative would be to have them talk in fluent Ancient Greek.

    • @alexman378

@andrion waser That’s a different matter, and I agree on that wholeheartedly. Combining “flashes of consciousness” that he did on films like JFK and NBK really help you connect-the-dots on what Nixon was thinking in certain scenes. How flashes of experiences earlier in life can have a bearing on our actions today.
As a detester of Nixon, Stone actually made me feel sorry for the guy. Which is a monumental feat in its own right.

It's just very strange. I *personally* believe that Oswald did it and he acted alone, but I can't deny how brilliantly Stone tells his story, cinematically. Just the first 5 minutes alone with the Martin Sheen voice over is genius.
With "JFK" he also essentially redefined cinematic grammar in a way he would continue to evolve over his next several films, and finally perfect, in my opinion, with "Nixon", which is my favorite film of his, and one of my favorite films of all time.
I'm much more in agreement with his "thesis" in "Nixon" as well, lol...

Personally, I am such a big fan of Oliver Stone and his work because some of his films had made an impact on people as well as history, too. Like his TV documentary mini-series, "The Untold History of the United States," which I regard as a great educational lesson for me and Mr. Stone and his people did an excellent job on it and I totally agreed and accepted what that series did unlike what Mr. Stone's right-wing critics and detractors had stated to the contrary.

Yeah I would never get a beer with James Woods, I've seen his tweets, he's kind of despicable. But I would never deny his filmography is amazing.
      Arthur Penn's "Night Moves"
Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America"
      Scorsese's "Casino"
      Robert Zemeckis' "Contact"
      Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides"
      all his work with Stone...
There was a time he one of the great American film actors. I suppose he still is, technically.
But he's also an insufferable asshole who chose the path to the dark side. It's sad, but it shouldn't diminish the work he's done.
I also love him in Stone's "Nixon" as HR Haldeman. A small role but he's great in it.

James Woods is very talented, but he's one of those character actors that's very "niche" (in that, he plays the best scumbags, lol!) Even his more sympathetic characters have a light aura of douchiness. He's a very, very good actor :) Edit - James Woods was also in Oliver Stone's film "Nixon."

Another account, from Manzarek(?) was that Jim was super geaky about a chance to meet Warhol, not the too cool for the room posturing in the film.
