He made JFK. One film about a conspiracy theory based on the books by Jim Garrison. It's a pretty common topic of interest, even in Washington. I will grant that it is definitely a conspiracy theory, but his large body of work does not center around conspiracy theories. (If he makes a film about Reptilians, the Illuminati & Bohemian Grove, then he can earn the title.)
But my idea of the "right thing" is different from yours. The idea of a government is that laws are made to decide what is right and wrong. The idea if a democracy is that different people come together to decide which laws are justified.
One can go back as far as ancient Greek literature (and follow that with Cicero among the Romans) to arrive at the distinction between conventional (what is legal) and universal moral law (what is correct to conscious). Socrates of Plato's Apology and Antigone of Sophocles are the literary exemplification of the same idea: the idea of a moral conscious/sense of duty that trumps the "law" of the state (Athens) or the edict of a King (Creon of Thebes). It does not boil down to moral relativism; but I guess amid our modern pluralism, it very well might come very close.
Because Colbert did not take his guest serious and had no empathy, did not see he was annoyed. Like he was on a mission. And btw - I don't care about any of these guys beliefs. Colbert proud himself to treat guests respectfully (at least when the show started) - in recent interviews I miss that. F.i. he keeps interrupting guests more and more.
from a guy who loves Colbert.. I'm a bit disappointed in this interview.. it seemed quite bias.. and reading the other comments, I see I'm not the only one.
Talking about the interview dougie. That's not even the definition of bias or in context to the interview. I wont drag your ass to the water to drink so go troll elsewhere hero.
We haven't seen the movie. So chill out about the movie. Eat a snickers bar or make tin foil hat memes. I love the arrogance that comes with dismissal attitudes.
@Steven Jones ...except the fact that you are the actual extremists, going all over the world waging wars, supporting dictators, etc etc, all under the supposed guise of spreading freedom and democracy...(!)
Man, how incredible would it be to sit down with Oliver Stone, smoke some reefer and talk about shit? Colbert blew this interview, repeating that Stone was into "secrets and conspiracies" and Stone visibly annoyed by it.
yeah man, he had to throw those buzz words in. Had to get that MSM programming in the interview. I'm really tired of hearing the words; conspiracy theory, because none of this is either. It's real.
The moment Stone mentioned American Muslim's porn habits being monitored to discredit them, Colbert pulls out the 'discredit Oliver Stone card' and asks him if he's high. You broke my heart Stephen
Or, just maybe, their time was running out and Colbert had to cut off a rambling Oliver Stone who went into bizzaro territory for no reason. It was a joke that Colbert served up for Oliver to end the interview with some levity.
Stephen was more confrontational here than he was with Donald Trump, he was pretty friendly with Donald Trump compared to this. I don't know a great deal about Oliver Stone, but it's pretty disappointing - I don't see how Oliver Stone deserves more contempt and less respect than Donald Trump does.
Colbert was doing Stone a service. By posing the arguments his detractors would Colbert handed Stone a megaphone to outline why he believes he is right and they are wrong. I would want to be interviewed in exactly the same way if I had been labelled a crank.
Honestly. Stephen is bad in a lot of interviews with "controversial" figures. He ALWAYS plays the interview safe by playing "Devil's Advocate". He doesn't want to rock the boat and he doesn't want to take any sides that might provoke controversy, only the ones that are politically acceptable to take. He's takes way less risks than even Jon Stewart took, and for that, politically speaking, Stephen is a pretty unremarkable Late Show host. He's certainly smart, and entertaining... but strikes me as being just another member of the mainstream liberal elite...
I'm not certain what you mean by "nutbaggery". Are you referring to JFK or some other work he's done? Why should he be treated like a "sideshow huckster"? There's a lot of ad hominem but not much justification.

Doc Valiant , I was a little surprised that Colbert, usually a pretty thoughtful guy, seemed to behave in such a bent, dismissive way. I wasn't even an entertaining hit piece, it just struck me as petty. I wonder if they have some bad history from the "Colbert Report" days? Anyway, it's too bad, I like them both and I was hoping for more. Have a good one!
He was playing the devil's advocate and is a bloody good interviewer. colbert was speaking on behalf of the doubters but i think Oliver put them to rest with his eloquent response to every question colbert threw at him.
Hey, it won't matter what you order, they'll make it up as they go along, anyhow. Chances are, it'll have a thin crust and be covered with spiced-up baloney (but with strangely 'fishy' smell)...

if it was legal, the wheels of government on a federal and state level would grind to a halt...as there is a hussle going on by politicians every 10 minutes
But that's no reason for allowing it to keep happening. It's irresponsible of us to allow all these types of corruption happen right under our noses. The government needs to be afraid of the people, not the other way around.
that's one thing but it doesn't mean most people would take a weed smoker seriously. In the mainstream mindset, weed is associated with laziness, artsy stuff and outlandish ideas. A weed smoker is stereotypically someone who kinda lives in his own crazy world, which is how Stephen is trying to depict Stone here. You can see it through the whole interview, he throws tiny remarks about how he makes movies about conspiracies with shady evidence and stuff...
That's a good question. The Graham Norton Show is the only one I can think of that doesn't have that desk for the host. (Except for Skavlan - a Swedish-Norwegian show.)
A real patriot on Stephen's show? Good job Oliver! Your reaction to his first question was priceless. This knucklehead did not want to help you sell tickets. He was too busy selling out himself!
You know that means Stone is a sell out too right? A bias chump spinning a narrative is a sellout through and through. Funny how the lower common denominators love Stone so much, probably because you lack enough education to also lack critical thinking skills which is why you guzzle down the idealistic and deluded ramblings of a far-left washed up director scrambling for any amount of credibility he can claw at without even contemplating if the wierdo with a hard on for Putin is only doing what he's doing because nobody else wants to associate themselves with a man with leanings towards an authoritarian dictator.
People, it's clear that Colbert's a fan of his work. He's asking him tough questions to get him to answer intelligently. Stop thinking everything is a conspiracy to undermine your beliefs. Oliver Stone is a grown-ass man.
yes i hate it how colbert tried to convince him/us that snowden should stand trial in a rigged system where a law has been made specificly to deal with such "subversive" ppl jesus im dissapointed thats like telling a black dude sure u can show the cops your gun nothing bad will happen
what're y'all talking about? Stephen didn't try to convince anyone, nor did he "attack" Stone. He asked the right questions so Stone could convince US that snowden should NOT stand trial.
Oliver Stone has been speaking up and making movies to stop the rights of the masses being trampled by the crooks at the top,for years. Respect for his integrity and continuous effort.
Man,this is like a little man trying to manipulate a Great man! Oliver Stone is one off the greatest man America ever produced! He is a icon of integrity , art and intellectual property in general!
Respect to the legendary film maker of Salvador, Platoon, JFK, Nixon, Born On The Fourth Of July, Bush, Snowden and more. Thank you for speaking the truth!!!
Can we get more guests like this in the future and less of the usual crap, please! It has been a while since I saw James Risen, Jeremy Scahill, Noam Chomsky, Glenn Greenwald, Mark Mazzetti, Amy Goodman or Ralph Nader on tv!
Not that I know much about Olive Stone, but I would've never expected someone like him to be such a strong supporter of Snowden and clear set of morals. Congrats!
Are you familiar with Oliver Stone`s movie JFK? If not find it and watch it. He pissed off alot of the establishment pointing to that JFK`s murder was a inside job within the U.S. government. My point is that Oliver Stone has been mistrusting. of the government for a very long time. Making a movie about Snowden is right up his alley.
You have one of the most compelling and interesting filmmakers of our time on your show and instead of going for the current topics you choose to patronize him over pot and conspiracy theories.. Poor effort Mr. Colbert.
Remember the telephone Party Line? People did not like their neighbors listening to their conversation. The USPO could not be a functioning entity if it competed with mail services dedicated to not opening your mail.
People are acting like colbert said "you lie!" stone was deflecting because he didn't want to answer the questions colbert asked(probably lazy) they weren't gotcha question merely a way for stone to defend his work. He's a grown fucking man he won't break because his questions weren't meant for babies.
+Freddy Toloni Well, it was flippant. Im sure they could get into an interesting discussion about the compilation of the OT and NT and history of hermeneutics, but that doesnt exactly jibe with the format of this show.
Stephen Colbert is often ''confrontational'' with guests that bring political luggage with them. It's not just Stone. This is a good thing. He plays the devil's advocate, so you think of the issues from more than one perspective. This is why I value his interviews.
now he's neutral towards Putin, I saw a CBS (or NBC or CNN or or or) panel freaking out, when they interviewd Stone. They couldn't bring Stone to badmouth Putin, they became really irritated and angry. We have to cherish precious people like Stone!
"If everybody followed their conscience...., we would end up having an anarchic system" If good, ethical people lead to anarchy, what does that say about the system? Stephen says the quiet part out loud!
I don't think Colbert brought stone on his show to ridicule him, he brought him on for him to share his beliefs and argue against to common belief of him being a conspiracy nut. Give Colbert a little credit
Stone is almost always smartest and most creative person in the room. It MUST be hard. Keep on going Oliver! You are same level, if not higher than the gold standart, Kubrick. Specially Oliver`s early 1990 movies are class if its own. There is SO much in JFK, NBK, Doors and Nixon. Finland gets you!
Wes below understands what Colbert was doing here. He wasn't attacking. He was giving Stone a forum for responding to the criticisms that are sure to come, since he's been criticized in these ways before.
Used to be a big Colbert fan. Now I've lost ALL respect. Not funny or amusing anymore. Just another corporatist shill. Bet he enjoys that phat paycheck.
It is because of brave people like Oliver Stone that we can see people, events, etc from different perpectives, He makes us think, and I would like to thank him for that
Guys, have you forgotten that Colbert used to have a show where he challenged people with political agendas all the time? It was his job to challenge his guests to get them to expound on their agenda more. With a guy like Oliver Stone, he just can't help it.
Nope - he used to challenge power by questioning. Now he is protecting power by being dismissive of those on the margins who are trying to find voice to speak truth to power.
Stone is brilliant. What a down to earth guy & truly a class act.
No, when I think conspiracy theorist I think of Alex Jones, Jesse Ventura etc..
He made JFK. One film about a conspiracy theory based on the books by Jim Garrison. It's a pretty common topic of interest, even in Washington. 'but if everyone just follows their conscience' - wow, stephen has really changed. how can you argue with doing the right thing?!
But my idea of the "right thing" is different from yours. The idea of a government is that laws are made to decide what is right and wrong. The idea if a democracy is that different people come together to decide which laws are justified.
i think you completely missed his point.... no i know you did.

Stephen has not followed his conscience for a few years now.

Oliver Stone is my spirit animal.
for Oliver's case I'm sure he fine with a lot of wackos would not watch his movies for that
Not your best interview, Colbert
I Blame the lame guest
Because Colbert did not take his guest serious and had no empathy, did not see he was annoyed. Like he was on a mission. And btw - I don't care about any of these guys beliefs. We haven't seen the movie. So chill out about the movie. Eat a snickers bar or make tin foil hat memes. I love the arrogance that comes with dismissal attitudes.
For everyone trying to discredit Oliver Stone, he went to Vietnam and got a Purple Heart, I think he should deserve some respect.
For serving his country, but not for his historical fiction crap.
Being a good soldier doesn't make you a good filmmaker
Platoon makes him a bad filmmaker?
He is two time oscar winner director. For Platoon and Born in the 4th July- One of the best movies about Vietnam war
unlike the scumbags in the media who attack his character and credibilty because they have none!

This was a tough interview, worthy of Oliver Stone's mind. "We can start with the Bible"- I love him.

He certainly does
He felt superior to Trump on IQ. But he knows Stone is ahead of him in IQ. Colbert is almost a bourne identity to me...
Good thing about Stone is that he's sane enough to sound crazy to other people.
Stephen was bad in this interview
He had him on in the first place and you could even tell the respect in the hand shake.
As expected considering his employer.
He tried to make it more jokey and less heavy. This isnt the show where you talk about issues this deep.

Why do talk shows have this strange desk to guest configuration where the guest is always twisting and straining their necks.
That's a good question. The Graham Norton Show is the only one I can think of that doesn't have that desk for the host. (Except for Skavlan - a Swedish-Norwegian show.)
Also the guest always sits lower.
because camera
James Corden comes from behind his desk and sits next to his guests. I've always wondered why most talk shows have this set-up too.
I agree. The Graham Norton show is progressive in that it batches celebrities together and you feel like you're in a chat with them.

Watch the Joseph Gordon-Levitt interview. Stephen describes Mr. Stone as "a bit of a conspiracy theorist". It's personal. Stephen was an ass here.
Oliver is way UNDERATED. ...his films tell the truth and it hurts some people
I hope the cia don't get rid of mr stone the way so many other conveyers of the truth has before him..
What a shame on Colbert not to treat Mr. Stone with the respect that he deserves.
After seeing the interview, and reading the comments below...I must say, shame on you Colbert.
Clearly Stephen doesn't like Stone personally..why bother having him on? Anyway, glad the movie and Snowden's story got more coverage.
"Are we being watched all the time?"
Works for a company with a big eye as their logo. Lmao
You have one of the most compelling and interesting filmmakers of our time on your show and instead of going for the current topics you choose to patronize him over pot and conspiracy theories.. Poor effort Mr. Colbert.
"I've enjoyed my life."
Just finished watching the interview... Wow... It's unreal!
original lie.....we can start with the bible :*) :*) love you Oliver!
Harrumph harrumph
You can tell Colbert was pissed when he said that. What with him being a die hard Catholic.
Yes, I don't think Stephen liked that comment.
+Freddy Toloni Well, it was flippant. Im sure they could get into an interesting discussion about the compilation of the OT and NT and history of hermeneutics, but that doesnt exactly jibe with the format of this show.
I had to listen to that part twice, just to make sure I heard it correctly!!! Fucking AWESOME!!!
Colbert audiance
SNOWFLAKE LEVEL 999
Make that 998
Colberts true colours come out
I really respected Oliver Stone
I have been sending NSA operatives blind with my sexy time since 1999.
Just tone it down man, don't drink so much red bull throughout the day
If they look then they cant unsee.
Thanks for posting this Colbert team, live from district 12!
Stephen Colbert is often ''confrontational'' with guests that bring political luggage with them. It's not just Stone. This is a good thing. He plays the devil's advocate, so you think of the issues from more than one perspective. This is why I value his interviews.
It worked much better when he was pretending to be a staunch conservative.
Let the man talk Stephen. Everytime he comes on the show, he is not respected and heard. He is telling the truth
How many times did he say conspiracy therories. Tone of the interview, I never seen Cobert sink so low. He spend so much time taking him down.
Oliver Stone has a cool demeanour. I really like him and think he is quite accurate in his work.
When he said, "The Bible". Lol.
now he's neutral towards Putin, I saw a CBS (or NBC or CNN or or or) panel freaking out, when they interviewd Stone. They couldn't bring Stone to badmouth Putin, they became really irritated and angry.
We have to cherish precious people like Stone!
Stephen Colbert is a corporate shill.
This is why I like Stephen because he does the job of other journalists by asking the hard questions even though he is just an entertainer.
So sad they cut and edited the part right after he talks about the Bible.
Would have LOVED to see Stephen debate the Bible with Oliver Stone.
Yeah
"If everybody followed their conscience...., we would end up having an anarchic system"
If good, ethical people lead to anarchy, what does that say about the system?
Stephen says the quiet part out loud!
I don't think Colbert brought stone on his show to ridicule him, he brought him on for him to share his beliefs and argue against to common belief of him being a conspiracy nut. Give Colbert a little credit
Stone is almost always smartest and most creative person in the room. It MUST be hard. Keep on going Oliver! You are same level, if not higher than the gold standart, Kubrick. Specially Oliver`s early 1990 movies are class if its own. There is SO much in JFK, NBK, Doors and Nixon. Finland gets you!
Colbert interupted Stone everytime he was on a roll, very annoying and biased interview.
".....oliver...larry....oliver....larry....."🤣
Is it me or stephen was kind of rushing the interview, the responses were getting interesting
Wes below understands what Colbert was doing here. He wasn't attacking. He was giving Stone a forum for responding to the criticisms that are sure to come, since he's been criticized in these ways before.
do you all see the true colbert now ? very bsd interview and what has Oliver Stone done wrong ? not one thing
Bwahaha, next time i get pulled over by the cops "Sir, have you been drinking or using drugs tonight?" "I've enjoyed my life."
So he really is OLIVER STONED.... Nice!
That's funny - I award you one intarwebs!
Love Oliver Stone.
Used to be a big Colbert fan.
Now I've lost ALL respect.
Not funny or amusing anymore. Just another corporatist shill.
Bet he enjoys that phat paycheck.
It is because of brave people like Oliver Stone that we can see people, events, etc from different perpectives, He makes us think, and I would like to thank him for that
Pardon Edward Snowden and free Chelsea Manning!
Stones got a lot of courage to be truthful
Guys, have you forgotten that Colbert used to have a show where he challenged people with political agendas all the time? It was his job to challenge his guests to get them to expound on their agenda more. With a guy like Oliver Stone, he just can't help it.
Nope - he used to challenge power by questioning. Now he is protecting power by being dismissive of those on the margins who are trying to find voice to speak truth to power.
Interviewer speaks so much
