    Great stuff Alex, thanks. The Extremist is still my favourite Satch album. His ability to always retain melody, even while shredding, is just awesome. You have that same amazing talent too.

    I think Alex would be a perfect player to do a cover cd of the best instrumentals. Bands cover other bands so why not instrumental guitarists covering other instrumental guitarists music?

    • @YaoEspirito

      It's a nice idea, as long as the musician puts his own interpretation and his own stamp on each song. No sense in just doing a literal copy of the original.

    Satriani's blend of techinque and phrasing always appealed to me. This series you are doing just confirms to me the complete guitarist you are Alex; but I know you'll insist you're still a student , learning !

    Hey Alex, are you going to make a video regarding the Style of Andy Timmons. When did you first hear of Andy? Do you remember it?

    • @asb3pe
      @asb3pe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also see some Andy Timmons in Alex's playing, I think Andy is one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, and he is exactly the same sort of humble, thankful person Alex seems to be, very grounded with what I would probably call an anti-ego. So many guitarists are so full of themselves, Alex and Andy have never ever been that way and it is a major part of what attracts me to both of them so strongly. My favorite Andy Timmons track is the rather obscure Astral Fishing, but his entire instrumental catalog is phenomenal. For anyone wanting to check him out, I recommend the video entitled "Andy Timmons demo of JHS Pedals AT Channel Drive pedal" on the JHS Pedals channel.

    Satch plays this chord that I love and it's instant Satriani sound. In a magazine they called it "The Enigmatic" I think it's A-E-F-C, basically a tritone or something like that. I don't know exactly how to call it, but if you play does 4 notes up the scale ascending sounds it sounds like Joe.

      @AlexHutchingsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @AstorSkywalker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexHutchingsMusic I can think of the song Tears in the Rain and many other songs. I like it when the chords just show you a style in themselves, no technique really required. Sometimes it's a progression, something simply at times like a blues or jazz thing. Instant Satch!!!! Glad you liked it, will be on the lookout for what you come up with.

    Crystal Planet Dude! I imagine something like the Battle For Britain but for an Alien Invasion on a Crystal Planet (Like the old black and white Universal Studios logo or Superman's Fortress of Solitude). Imagine everyone scrambling to their space ship for alien dog fight! and they are all taking off, and then when the lead melody kicks in they are scarping through the clouds at full throttle!!! Just let your imagination take where it may after that! Rock On Man!

    Good Friday Alex I'm your 291st view ! Joe has been one of my all time favorites, due to his Solid melodic roots. You might even say "Old school" approach to guitar melody and lead! I do not know how many guitarist that Joe actually taught to play, but they are many! Who knows how many that he's inspired through the years and he's still killing it today. Hey Alex a little JS story from me. I often used to go up to London and regularly visited a record store called Honest Jon's. They knew me in there and especially my love of guitar fusion, and one day in 1986 when I visited the guy behind the counter said check this out. He handed me a copy of an album by an unknown guitarist, it was Not of this Earth. Needless to say I followed Joe after that and when Surfing hit, well the rest is history. Speak soon mate, there is a litte question I need to run by you. Rock on, En

      Right, album had that legato feel. I saw him shortly before or just after that was released, and he was enjoying playing all that legato stuff throughout most of the show. He's different than someone like jazz giant Alan Holdsworth, but he was the first one, to my knowledge, who created such mysterious eastern style lines in more of a rock-pop vein, with flowing glissando, (yet friendly, approachable sounding and approachable like from Jimi Hendrix) legato parts.

    Satch. Good call.......responsible for some astonishing moments....talking of which, that interlude you played with the sustainer was AWESOME. That's another point that Satch was often criticised for early in his career - he was referred to as an "effects player" when in truth, effects, whammy bars, extra frets......they're all just creative tools as you perfectly demonstrate.
    cool :)

    Even though I listen to tons of guitarists that are technically better than Satch one way or another, his songs and solos are always so engaging and emotive I can never stay away from his music for long. All oh his stuff is so cinematic you could easily fill multiple movies, series and video games worth of soundtracks with them. I dare anyone to listen to songs like Time Machine, Up In The Sky, Crystal Planet, One Big Rush, Devil's Slide or Mindstorm and tell me they wouldn't make for some kickass anime openings.

      I know what you're saying and in some sense I agree, Joe has always stuck to his style, and why shouldn't he since that's what has worked for him and brought him such financial success... however, I just want to say Joe has also never been afraid to "try a different approach" on each of his albums. For example, he's done full CD's where every song was recorded live in the studio instead of piecemeal in a studio setting. I admire this about Joe. Also, Joe has branched out into different cultures a small bit too, that song Asik Vaysel off the Professor Satchafunkilus CD, Asik is an obscure (to us westerners) Turkish guitar player. Again, I admire Joe doing things like this. Yes, Joe has long been "accused" of being slightly too formulaic, but I don't think it's entirely fair. I appreciate that your comment is a massive compliment to Alex, and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. :-)

    Many people say "brings back so many memories", but really, Satriani brings the best memories of my teen years. Listening to The Extremist while playing NES with my older brother, seeing my distant cousin at home every weekend (I had a HUGE crush on her), my family having so many problems with money every day... best years of my life, with the good and the bad stuff. Listening to songs like Why, Tears in the Rain, Summer Song... and some years after I got my first job and bought the self titled Satriani album... In my humble opinion, the best two albums by Satriani. The Extremist had the best songs and the self titled had the best sound (obviously recorded live, with amazing musicians).

    Albums from the library...YES! I distinctly remember getting "I Can See Your House From Here" by Pat Metheny and John Scofield from my local branch. Julian Bream, Andres Segovia, Chet Atkins...it was an invaluable resource as a 17-18 year old who couldn't buy records too often. Getting a great book and a great CD from the library was a treasured score. TH-cam is better in so many ways, these amazing videos being but one example, but I am happy to have had that experience. Like digging through crates for records, it had it's own unique rewards. Thank you, Alex, for your music and your teaching. Cheers to you, sir.

    I did Midnight as a piece for my Grade 6 exam and achieved a distinction. My favourite tune was always Ice 9 for a while. I listened to Surfin and Flying for ages, got into the Extremist but my tastes changed and I thought Satch got a little bit samey after that but, I still respect him for his body of work and inspiration over the years. I love The Stomp by the way. And I didnt comment on the SRV video. I was busy rescuing a dog from Turkey. He is a beauty by the way. Have you heard Rick Graham do a version of Time. OMG it is amazing..With the whole Stevie Ray thing I was pretty late to the party with that one because I was/am such a massive Jimi fan. I always thought he was just a white copy cat so I didnt pay him too much attention but when I really listened to him I realized that he is pure blues all the way whereas Jimi was much more psychedelic and still played the blues but had a more colourful palette. Now I think Stevie is brilliant but I dont really do the note for note copying. I try to take the essence from the music and create my own style. I even do that with your JTC lessons. This was a great lesson though. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers Mr.H

    Satriani has a mastery of melody and mood , plus his tone and techniques are unsurpassed for me. It's all about the song and the feel of the song I think & that's why after listening to a Satriani album I always come away feeling like I've been on an emotional journey to some strange land. I enjoyed your statement Zippy, got a laugh from it, thanks. :-) However, I just want to say that, in my humble opinion, there has never been a more amazing album from start to finish than Welcome To The Jungle, and it is mainly due to Slash's playing. Thankfully, guitar playing isn't really a competition, so we can enjoy both Joe and Saul equally, depending on what sort of musical mood we are in. Clearly two very different players, but also clearly two of the best ever at their own styles.
