Alfred Hickock threw Steven off his set when Steven was just trying to say hello having been such a massive fan of his. (This was after Jaws) and HC referred to Steven as "That kid who made that shark movie" (HC was an absolute dick)
But we saw glimpses of the driver, like his arm. With Stephen King, the truck would have a mind of its own. Also, it does kinda fit in with Spielberg's later monster movies. Here it's a truck, in Jaws it's a shark (I think he used some of the same sound effects when the shark blew up), and in Jurassic Park it's dinosaurs.

@@shadowt.lucario8416It was blood. That fabric caught in the still running fan was from the truck driver’s shirt. Story-wise thinking, he may have popped the door open just as the truck reached the edge of the cliff, but the air horn was sounding well after the cab was airborne over the side….someone had to have been pulling the cord. Most likely the driver went weightless for a moment, then hit the windshield on the first impact. He was then thrown to the right, then under the dash on the floor. When the truck cab hit the bottom of the ravine upside down, the driver remained trapped on the floor…bleeding out onto the wheel. If you look closely, you can also see a bloody head impact on the cracked windshield.
I loved this movie, but always disliked the crash scene at the end. Not for the reason most others dislike it (no explosion), but because the door to the truck is wide open before it goes over the cliff. It gives the impression that the mysterious truck driver jumped out and is still alive.

whatever happened to the destroyed truck and car at the bottom of the canyon? are they both still there? if not, how were they removed? where are they now? I've been wondering about this for all these years.
They were a real car and truck. The bottom of the canyon is actually fairly close to Sierra Highway, and it would have not been a problem to tow them out from where they landed.
@colin1549 Why do people spew out obvious lies like this? There is no reason for you to believe they used toys, so you just made that up for reasons beyond all comprehension. Why?? Explain it to me.
That looks like the same truck that hit that Duncan dude on maximum overdrive. Plus that roar sound was also used in Jaws when it shows Bruce sinking to the bottom. Speilberg said it was a dinosaur roar from some old movie. He also said Jaws and Duel were basically one in the same. The shark basically being what the truck was on the land. I watched this really late one night when i was a kid and really got into it. I liked how they never show the driver of the truck bc it added to the suspense. Notice how he does the same thing in Jaws. Yeh Bruce may have kept malfunctioning but I think it turned out even better than if it would have showed the shark a lot. Both are very good movies and Jaws is my all time fav. Speilberg is the best director ever IMO.
I still say David manns wife was in cahoots with the truck driver, she hired him to terrorize her husband cuz she was mad at him from an argument they had .
Fun fact: Duel was the first movie Steven Spielberg directed.
0:50-1:48 The cameraman absolutely deserved an Oscar for that iconic shot!!! 💓❤️💓❤️

The stunt driver should have closed the truck door before they leapt out of the truck.
He tried to.
He had no time because he was going to die
Those doors don't latch shut on their own like they do today.
Seems more like a movie story by Stephen King than Steven Spielberg!

Well it's based off a short story by Richard Matheson who wrote roughly a dozen screenplays for the original Twilight Zone show.

It was open for the stunt driver to jump out. The behind the scenes mentioned that.
Can anyone explain this so the car and the truck hit head one but yet the car is going off cliff side ways

本当は飛び降りる際、ドアを素早く閉めたのかもしれませんが、上手く閉まらなかっただけなのかもしれません。
