As insane as it may sounds, keeping an absolutely awful job until you’ve lined up a new one is better than quitting it outright. Yes, quitting a job you HATE is an amazing feeling BUT that good feeling wears off VERY FAST. Especially in this today’s job market, finding another job can take at least 6 months. I paid my house and vehicles off, pay my credit card balance off to avoid interest each month, etc. Debt is what makes us all slaves to the grind. And I played that game for way too many years. I disagree at 5:05. The average job/employer in America is toxic. You can thank the BBs and their abysmal voting patterns for causing this (as well as the housing crisis).

If you're gunna quit, do it AFTER you secure a new job. If its very bad and you can't find anything, just do the bare minimum to maintain the job and do your best. If you must quit, make sure you acknowledge the risk and have 12-18 months of emergency fund/credit to maintain your dwelling and basic necessities. Don't even do that honestly, stick it out. Getting healthier helps, makes you capable of more, letting things slide off you better. Processed foods and sugar destroy our health, energy, sleep, and mood. I know it sounds random but its not, health is the foundation for EVERYTHING. If you're low on options at least work on that, it does help, genuinely.

@@Jake38nine Alone no, that isn't what I said. Having a large amount of credit available alongside a years emergency fund means just in case you hit the worst case scenario and can't find a new job in a year, at least you can go potentially another year and acrue some debt, instead of losing your home or worse. Of course it should be a last last resort, but in that scenario that seems to be getting more common I think its a fair extra backup plan to have. Does not replace an emergency fund and of course everything should be done to get a job before it gets to that point. Credit isn't a bad thing. Use it as a debit and pay off monthly to build a credit score, and outside of that only for emergencies where money now, pay later over time is actually a benefit (like the potential situation above!).

True about health. I've started getting into weightlifting starting in August, and I'm getting good feedback from people regarding visible changes in my appearance. But I also went through periods of fatigue probably due to trying too hard to gain muscle while losing weight. So I looked into what to do, it turns out one of the best answers is to spend time RECOVERING. Like, the example given by a gentleman with a PhD in sports science (Dr Mike Izraetel from his Renaissance Periodization youtube channel) is professional athletes: You'd think they are training all the time, but in reality, when they aren't doing their very real training and practice, they are doing NOTHING. They sit around and eat a bunch of protein and healthy carbs, and play videogames or smoke some weed and chill. And that means when gametime rolls around, they are fully recovered mentally and physically to go all out. So now, when I feel fatigued mentally and physically, I take at least an hour and just make it mean nothing, which helps me de-stress and remember to smile! It's crazy, but sometimes I think I can actually feel the happiness slowly crawling it's way back into my body during recovery.

I think the "toxic" job definition isn't about just unethical or illegal behavior of colleagues or workplace, but what it's doing to the worker physically. Night sweats, panic attacks, passive suicide ideation, etc. are all signs that it's time to move to a different part of the company or find a new job. Also, I agree that now's not the time to quit. Just wait 'til you're laid off. My company right now is going through its 3rd RIF in 10 months and the company's stocks are up on the heels of layoffs! This is the new lever companies use every quarter now to artificially inflate their stocks. Goodbye to staying in a company 3+ years. In Sept alone, I saw 20-40% cuts across customer-facing, engineering, and product teams.

Obviously, financial security for at least 4-6 months is a minimum when thinking of quitting, money that you expect as final payment which can be payment in lieu, redundancy etc( thats what i had). I got to keep most of the money and landed a new job within 2 months. BUT! Its a risk and if you are not used to being out of work, I advise people not to do it as its emotionally draining, believe me! Yes, you have money for the foreseeable future but you have no long term job security yet in place! Very weird situation mentally. This plus the job search aspect which we all know is a huge luck game, being in the right place at the right time etc. You can be the best candidate but you are not getting the job if they don't like you! That's reality. So people should really think hard before quitting and without a job to go to!

I'm 54 and going to HVAC school at night at the local community college. My plan is to finish the 2-year practical experience portion of the licensing process and then farm a few nearby neighborhoods. My niche is offering discount services tailored to people needing to keep their systems hanging on for another year or two. It isn't glamorous, but I know a few guys making a killing at it. Being a retired military officer with a pension helps in getting my plan off the ground. I'll never work for somebody else again if I can help it.

I’m a registered dietitian working in acute care/inpatient setting and I am paid 10% less an hour than my predecessor and was denied some fringe benefits he had. We graduated from the same undergrad program a year apart, and I have a MS! (He does not). I tried approaching HR about it and got shut down, tried again, shit down again. Tried to continue the conversation and didn’t even get a response to my email. So frustrating! I feel so undervalued here :(

I graduated in Spring 2023 with a degree in electrical engineering and a computer engineering minor. It took me over 6 months to land what's turned out to be a bait-and-switch dead-end nightmare technician role out of desperation, and now I'm trapped because because I can't even get phone screenings. I'm getting maybe one or two recruiters reaching out per month at best, and they normally schedule the phone screening but ghost me before even doing it. I've even had recruiters ghost me instead of calling me for screenings they scheduled literally the day before.
Then there's all the recruiters that I ignore, because they're looking for even lower-paying jobs at the company I'm already working for, which is apparently the only place actually hiring in my city.

An EE degree alone is no sure fire way to land a great job making great money. What OP probably failed to do before graduating was to secure good internships that would lead to job offers before graduation. Because of internships and networking, I received two job offers several months before I graduated. Get the degree, network well, and land those internships! It’s essential to do that PRIOR to graduation, or else it’s like applying for jobs while unemployed.

The last year I was there, we had an absolute meltdown by one employee to her boss (he IS a jerk) and about 5 people took LOAs due to burnout (those are the people that told me themselves it was due to burnout, we had 2-3 others with 2 month LOAs where I did not know the reason. I looked for jobs, but did not get them. My friend on another team was 25 and he started having heart problems. A cardiologist told him he needed to reduce his stress and consider quitting his job. He quit. His health is back to normal.

What if you were to push back and not take the abuse from your boss? What if you were to say that you cannot handle the workload if they have burdened you with unreasonable demands?

During my 2 years there, there were 3 separate times myself and other staff were only given 70% of our paid salary, then 40%. It made me start to think should I quit? Here’s the thing most people should’ve reasoned about the “great resignation” . For a society to work you need a core amount of taxpayers and, no, companies are not gonna pick up all the slack. In fact, they are effective at not paying taxes legally.
So after enough people quit, the government cannot keep the party going sending everyone COVID checks, and the nation goes into heavy debt and GDP drops and the economy tanks.
And as an individual, at some point you run out of money but now you have a bunch other people realizing the same thing coming back to find jobs and now their skills have stagnated, some of their best years for earning income and for getting compound interest gone, heavier in debt cause they never learned to live below their means, and competing for the same McJobs they left but now with a bunch of other people and, maybe, even against cheaper foreign labour applicants (Canada).
The great resignation had a short expiration date if you really thought about it even for 5 minutes.
