It's just brutal in tech right now. I'm at the VP level, and was laid off, but then found a new job in May... there were over 820 applicants for the job, according to the company (this is for an executive role, mind you.) That's just insane. It's hard to understand how President Musk is having trouble finding American workers with so many tech workers out of a job.

Lost my job at the beginning of 2024 and haven't been able to find a full time job since. I'm currently working at a temp job to hold me over, making way less and barely getting by. But at least I can still look for something full time in the meantime. Hoping that 2025 will be better for myself and everyone else!
Worst time I've ever had applying for a new job. And I've sacrificed progress in my side hustle as all my energy went into job applications for things I wanted to do and was qualified for. 😢 feeling so despondent 😰
Never been laid off in my life until this past May - job eliminated. Many applications but only 1 interview. Trying to find a job is tough but even worse being 55. Ageism is definitely real! Have been told the only way to get a job right now is networking and "who you know." Been trying but so far it hasn't helped. Job market in 2024 was awful - hoping 2025 is way better!
@Hunter77567 exactly. How many people had to quit work 5 years ago because their kid's school was shut down? How many people were laid off then too? How many people accepted a lower paying or part time job just to have something coming in? One stat we can see is the disability rate which has skyrocketed especially for those in prime working years.
Yes, and there are often many more actively applying to full-time position and riding out full-time and beyond with the gig economy to soften the blow of living on savings and credit.
What is strange about 2024 is not that it had a consistently bad job market, but the wildly conflicting mixed signals I've seen as a job seeker. Also employers being less subtle about intending to take workers, especially immigrant workers, for granted.
I'm curious to see how the gig economy and contract jobs impact the accuracy of the unemployment rate. I'm actively seeking healthcare roles, preferably remote. I see so many contract and part time jobs that should be full time jobs. I also aee ao many jobs that require experience AND a college degree paying under the market value for said jobs. I appreciate you and your content!!
I just can't believe I don't qualify for unemployment after graduating college or when my employer ended my internship. So there's millions of students just like me who aren't even considered inside the Department of Labors unemployment statistics...
Let's put it this way...if we had a robust job market, there would not be the presidential election result we experienced as a good economy/labor market almost guarantees re-election for an incumbent.
Hi Brain, I know it’s a really hot button issue at the moment. But it would be awesome if you could weigh in on the H-1B Visa issue. You had mentioned correctly that there have been big layoffs in tech in the last few years. So I feel it’s a big spit in the face to American tech workers when Silicon Valley is successfully lobbying for a major increase in bringing in foreign labor.
But no recession and record breaking economy according to Jerome Powell. We have so many opens that we need to expand the h1B1 visa according to Musk and Trump since we need more applicants in the market.
For years, the tech industry has been defined by a market bloated with inflated salaries and unsustainable hiring practices. Many individuals boasted about earning high six-figure incomes while working minimal hours-often at the expense of seasoned professionals who drove real value. This dynamic, fueled by excessive demand and low accountability, distorted the labor market and created an unsustainable bubble. Now, as automation and AI increasingly handle routine tasks, companies are slashing bloated salaries for roles that no longer deliver proportional value. At the same time, for positions requiring genuine expertise, there’s a troubling trend of discriminating against experienced workers with higher salary expectations. A study by the Federal Reserve in 2023 found that workers over 45 are 30% less likely to be hired in tech roles, despite often being more qualified. In trying to correct wages overnight, employers have created a perfect storm: they alienate the very talent that can innovate and adapt to evolving market demands while destabilizing the workforce with abrupt cuts and layoffs. This shortsighted correction, while addressing some inefficiencies, risks undermining long-term value creation and employee trust.
The oil industry is the same way in Texas. When oil gets over $100 a barrell people get money. When it gets over $130 a barrell even blue collar workers get almost 200k a year! When it hits $50 a barrell everyone but the managers are laid off while to get rehired goes back to $30/hr for the fields. It is always feast or famine. But oddly they will keep 5 managers and a director to manage 2 people because of course those cushy office jobs are too important to cut. ... eye roll
We've learned over these last week or so that H1Bs and outsourcing is coming after every last job for Americans. Can't even be a trucker or cashier anymore. Americans better start putting pressure on their politicians to end this, otherwise no amount of resume polishing will get you a job.
After many years of being in IT as a Technical and Mainframe Specialist... I was laid off. The number of résumés that I have submitted, false hopes in being recruited, minimal interview processes, and being "Ghost" by companies... hasn't been a pleasurable experience. Obtaining unemployment that was less than 3/4 the pay of what I earned is a kick to the teeth! Having a background as a CNC Machinist with Quality Control Inspector, I decided to fallback on my previous manufacturing skills. Within one week of doing so I was offered a position with a global provider of industrial electrical systems as their new Metal Fabrication Specialist. I'm excited to get from behind the monitor and be part of building something again while improving my overall well-being.
I logged my interviews this year; I ended with 35 interviews. 3 got back to me. Those three were offers, and two got rescinded last minute. The rest I never heard from again. And, lo & behold, 1/3rd of them (specifically the ones I interviewed earlier in the year) are hiring again.
I noticed that the IT wages dropped while in other industries they went up. I'm a hacker since 13 and didn't want to work in IT as I had friends and family who did and their work lives were horrible. I worked in a hotel as a night manager and moved to IT only because the pay was bad. Now when I look at the job market I can see that wages in my old industry went up and a night manager now gets paid what I did as a software engineer for a lot fewer responsibilities. In my manager job I programmatically automated all of the processes (only for myself) to a point I didn't need to do anything while others ran around like headless chickens pressing buttons. I see potential for lateral career movement now that wages equalized: work 2-3 jobs that keep normies busy and automate them.

I have never job searched when I was already employed somewhere, so I didn’t even think about this. I am currently working at consulting firm A, and wanted to just start applying for other jobs at other firms to see if I can get a few interviews. I have seen a few roles I’m interested in recently. When I am submitting applications for interviews and reaching out to recruiters, is there any way my current manager will find out I’m applying for other roles? Do I need to check a box on applications asking if they can contact my current employer, before the receiving an offer stage? Is that a thing? Will recruiters contact my current company when deciding whether to grant an interview? Or does that only come after receiving an offer somewhere? I plan on staying at my current role unless I find something better at another firm, but I definitely don’t want my current company or manager to find out I’m applying anywhere else. TLDR: My understanding is that my current employer would only find out if I receive an offer from another company and I accept it, thus starting the background check process, and they do a reference check. Is that correct? Or would there be a contact to my company before the accept an offer stage?

What about age? It's obvious that ALL jobs are pretty much entry level. Even a manager position needs little experience. Yeah, I'm not not on unemployment.
That's not what I observed at all. Entry-level work is completely dead, and you need 3 to 5 years of experience to even have a chance at entry-level work. Only people with experience were able to find anything.

I might be in the minority to have had a better year than I had some 4-5 years ago due to before and a little bit during the pandemic I was working an extremely stagnating job that I had for way too long often being looked down on by supervisors and patrons. So when they let me go at the end of 2020 it was a huge relief. Then the following year I got a more respectable job and while it might not necessarily pay much, it's a good respite from having such a miserable job for 13 years prior to the pandemic, albeit there will be many challenges to any and all jobs you work throughout your career. Just know where you are and aren't wanted where you're working. You could have a difficult boss who says that you need to work more with less or that he's going to make your job more difficult and you could tell him, "okay, bye! Pleasure having worked for you." Then you can have a good boss tell you that he appreciates you and not work too hard.

I want to see data for college graduates specifically. Data that shows college graduates employment rates. I’ve experienced that the job market has been disastrous for those who fall into that category.
They got hired at McDonalds, that counts a good employment to the gov.
Have friends graduating and it’s pretty bad right now
Graduated in May and have not found a full time job yet…also graduated with several internships as well
Graduated with an associates degree and got an ok paying job for where I'm at in the field I got my degree in. It did take 4 months and 400ish applications and 10-15 interviews to get it.
@@rmo9808 yea I have a masters degree … earned it this year… and hopefully within 2 years a PhD but I haven’t had luck in the job market! I now believe that entrepreneurship IS the most guaranteed route for success and of course bills HAVE to be paid… so get your income where you can… but yea my own personal experiences in this job market has really changed my outlook on the American job market ENTIRELY! My eyes have OPENED!
1836 applications submitted according to my Indeed profile, 8 call backs, 2 interviews.
2024 gave me the push I needed to leave a job I've had 15 yrs and decided to get some education to move on from an industry I stale mated in a long time ago for growth.
Crap economy was caused by Vice President Biden and their genius voters.
Face it ,mud likes foreigners, he knows he can control them@
Cheap H1B workers are hard to come by especially when you're pushing an anti immigration platform (not just hard on illegal immigration)
because its a lie
its a open secret that foreigners like to hire foreigners as well
i went to school with a lot of these guys that now work in big tech
they arent any smarter than americans yet i know more of them working in high paying tech jobs than americans, and cant get one of those jobs myself
Fellow unemployed tech worker. Yea Musks comments were a slap in the face. Anything to line their pockets.
You gave a list of companies with job openings. But you didn't say where the openings were. For example, the national accounting firms have jobs open in India, not the United States. How many job openings do they have in the united states
Exactly
I wasn't able to achieve my career goals in 2024, but I have the rest of 2025 to do so. Happy new year.
What about the people who's unemployment ran out? I don't think I've seen that on these reports.
Real unemployment rates way higher then shown. Wouldnt surprise me if it was between 12- 20 percent.
1 million+ people on unemployment is not sustainable, especially with a 20% uptick over a span of one year.
Yes, and there are often many more actively applying to full-time position and riding out full-time and beyond with the gig economy to soften the blow of living on savings and credit.
Hey man, can you do a video on this whole H1 B issue going on? What did you see as a recruiter regarding it?
Would love a video on this as well!!
a 2025 predictions video would be great too in that regard
Also would love a video on this topic.
Yeah, 60 year old female here, whose job was "eliminated" in November. This is gonna be fun.
Yes, it was that bad. And it will be even worse in 2025.
Currently job seeking. Wish me luck :)
I just can't believe I don't qualify for unemployment after graduating college or when my employer ended my internship. So there's millions of students just like me who aren't even considered inside the Department of Labors unemployment statistics...
How come you don't qualify?
@@dericofdorking Because he was an intern and not an employee. Yeah, splitting hairs, but how else are you going to cook the books?
Yes. 2024 was ridiculously stupid.
Let's put it this way...if we had a robust job market, there would not be the presidential election result we experienced as a good economy/labor market almost guarantees re-election for an incumbent.
True but…just look at the current POTUS… dude is almost dead in the head at least. I’d say that’s an exception. No way he’d last 4 more years.
I'm an immigrant and I agree, it's immoral to say you need to increase that visa program when so many Americans can't find jobs, particularly in tech.
Yes! The job market was REALLY, REALLY BAD in 2024.
I left my job in July to skill build; sent out hundreds of applications, did about 10 or so interview, was hired by a friend.
But no recession and record breaking economy according to Jerome Powell. We have so many opens that we need to expand the h1B1 visa according to Musk and Trump since we need more applicants in the market.
It's a lot easier to gut salaries if you can pull in foreign workers you can under pay and dispose of when convenient
How many of the “job openings” are ghost jobs?
That's a great question!
My husband has 4 weeks of unemployment. He’s in tech. It’s been truly awful.
You have to check pre-pandemic vs. post-pandemic data and extract the layoff peak data to have valid comparisons.
How many novel exploits have you found yourself using your own tooling? Many these days call themselves hackers while just using premade tools, which makes me doubt you're an actual hacker who can reverse engineer and manipulate binaries.
@@bubbasanches4591 The last hacking I did was finding out how to repair cinema projector ASIC issues that the manufacturer intentionally sunset so that you buy new machines. 2023 and 2024 were shit years for the job market and economy, Bryan!
I have to sell my condo and move into a doublewide somewhere. 19 YOE in software engineering. I have almost accepted that my career is over. Meanwhile Musk and Vivek are pushing for more H1-B visas.
The good thing about the Tech industry is, almost every company need tech ppl, so almost every company is your Tech Industry.
Do people still believe the job reports?
It seems that employers think in 2025 they can bully employees back in line because the upcoming administration is more anti worker and more pro corporate. But honestly, I am just going to do what’s best for me and family. I don’t think people are as scared about layoffs anymore because it’s not like people are retiring with companies anymore. I don’t think companies are going to intimidate workers as much as they think they will lol
Spoken like a man without a family, a mortgage or a future. But lots of Pokemon!🤣😆
@ oh please. You old farts need to understand that not everyone gets fulfilled with kids or raising a family. But I do understand that you don’t have as much flexibility because you have family so what I say might not apply to you. The point is that I am not afraid of layoffs anymore because I have experienced one before. If anything else, it just teaches me to grow my side hustle and find better roles. I am employed but I am still applying for new roles for 2025 because I am not going to grow within my current company. I understand the importance of stability but stability is not helpful either if it causes you to stagnate
@Headhunter_212 pokemon is cool, unlike you.
@@DiamondFlame45 the new administration is against workers? Biden's administration gaslit and flat out lied about unemployment trends while giving companies would room to essentially get away with unethical layoffs.

The corporate whip doesn't sting as much for remote workers.

My hours were cut equaling 10k less annual income. It did give me back more time for work life balance. However, I only see it continuing into 2025. I am a federal worker and I know there will be reduction in hours. Thankfully, I live well below my means. I still increased all my retirement and savings contributions. Doing more with less was a win this year.

An industry that seems to lean older is courier and delivery transport industry.
A lot of young ones won't do it because it requires lifting and you are out on your own a lot. It is also repetitive. So younger people aren't interested.
Most people I have worked with in the industry are 55 plus and are doing it because they got laid off and want a "change of pace". Pay is pretty good, and you only need a licence and clean driving record. You may need a licence for bigger vehicles, but they should he easy to obtain.
Could do worse.

2025 is imho trending towards most employees kicking most employers to the curb.
Yeah the economy is interesting because remote work is not as prevalent as it's advertised to be it's very niched because I want you to be in certain States certain regions some employers are only hiring in certain time zones which I understand but I just start remote work would be more flexible and more open-minded but it's really not like they're very specific about where they want you to be which is cool cuz I know they have reasons behind it but

Pleasure having worked for you."
