He was clearly a good man, a moral man, his prejudices were almost non-existent which is amazing for the time he lived in and grew up in(aside from one comment about how Catholics could be good Protestants and were having 18 kids etc.). Almost everything he stated during his period in charge was true, and he was brought down by the Unionist mob, even culminating in the UVF blowing up Belfast's water supply to force his resignation(yeah cos blowing up a city's water supply will prove you are more British then the UUP PM..lol). His outsider perspective as a man who lived in England, France and Germany, and who was well educated and positively enlightened compared to most UUP politicians, lent him a mentality that was the right one to deal with the problems of the day, but the majority of Unionists just did not want to stop the good life of the Orange State Plantation, and 35-40% of his UUP colleagues just would not allow equality. The truth is he was very forward thinking in many ways, wanting close ties with the Taoisigh of the day, Lemass and then Lynch, and wanting a friendly relationship with the Republic and a progressive Ulster. What is a shame is that he did not have the bloody mindedness to take the majority of Pro Reform UUP politicians after the 1969 election and seek to exclude the 30ish% of extremists in his parliamentary party by entering power sharing with all the other smaller blocks-that maybe was not possible, but he should have tried it. His education and accent were English but his decency was as Irish as his name. He ought to be remembered a lot more and have streets named after him imo. Compare this guy to the DUP Neanderthals today FFS. He was brought down for wanting One man, One vote, which could have averted or at least postponed and/or reduced the scale and length of the conflict/escalating tensions as clearly once you institute One man, One vote, you would have had some de facto form of power sharing if he got his way(you can see where the train of thought leads). I'd say he was 35 years ahead of his time, but the reality is he was light years ahead of 50% plus of Unionist politicians even now, 53 years on!!!!!! This is the kind of leader the Unionist people should have, who represents their interests but shows fairness and kindness to others. After all, they share the same island as the Irish. Instead the rest of us have to put up with the DUP morons who voted for Brexit and voted against May's deal complaining about the outcome of it. They exist only to hate us, rather than represent anything real.

"even culminating in the UVF blowing up Belfast's water supply"
It was also the electrical grid they destroyed. This was one of the most successful false flags in history. At the time they convinced the Unionist population that the IRA blew it up. At the time, the IRA was drinking beer in Sligo, and had taken a nonviolence position. Then the UVF blew up the water and electrical systems. The population blamed the IRA/Nationalists. They sent the Unionists into a frenzy that led to the firebombing and pogroms of innocent Catholics in border neighborhoods.
So, the false flag, toppled a government and sent the violence into full swing to a point it could not be undone.
It was not until years later that it came out it was UVF and not the IRA that did that, but by then it was too late.
The non functioning IRA became the boogey man.
If it had come out that the UVF did that and the IRA was doing nothing, the next 30 years could have been avoided. But for years, the population believed that "the IRA started this".
One of the most successful false flags in history. Otherwise, NI would simply have followed the path of the US civil rights movement. Disagreements, but gradual progress.

Why did they keep calling it ulster? As if it was all of Ulster under English rule? 9 counties in ulster, 6 under English rule and 3 are in the republic. Makes no sense but then again the whole “northern Ireland” thing never did make sense
