    So great to see you posting about the nesting box again. I'm excited for me and my preschoolers to follow the journey again this year... hopefully with a much happier ending.

    Thank you for this video, it’s answered my questions!
    I have been watching Blutetits take nesting material in and out of a box for a few days now.
    I couldn’t understand why they were taking it in and then removing it and thought at first it was another bird stealing it but as I watched closer I realised it couldn’t be because a bird will go in and then leave within seconds and both times it had nesting material in its beak. You are so right when you say that the more you learn about them the more you realise there is more to learn!

    It's funny how the flies get in from the tiniest places and can't go out on "opened doors", so this kind of happens to birds too. 😃

      lol... I read that the adult birds will not be eating in their nest and that looks exactly what happened with this fly :)

    it's not easy to know how the nest will turn out until there's enough materials. I'm guessing the mosses she was gathering ended up being too damp, throws it all back out and start gathering a different type.

    Just an update for you Fionn. I have again seen activity at my nest box. I was quite worried that they had abandoned it but I saw a juvenile at the feeding station and an odd coming and going by adults to the nest box. I am assuming that they created the nest while we had the cold weather and I wasn't in the garden enough to see it, and I can also only assume they laid eggs which have now hatched. I suspect the adults are coming close to the box but not going in as a way of trying to tempt the juveniles out of the box. There is still a bird flying into the box today, staying in a while (anywhere from half an hour to an hour), leaving for about the same length of time then returning again. Exciting to see and at least reassured a little that the box hasn't been abandoned.

    I dont really know anything about birds. I don't know where they build nests "in the wild" when they're not building in a birdhouse, but I wonder if they do the nesting shuffle without any moss because if they weren't building in a box then they'd have to level out the surface that they intend to build the next on?

    • @FionnODonoghue
      @FionnODonoghue  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nest building for other birds would be much different than these guys ! These bluetits always nest in a cavity 😁! But they do bring in loads of moss until its level before proceeding to make it soft 😁

    Interesting. I’ve noticed my couple have started coming to the box earlier in the day too (around 7:30am compared to closer to 11am a few weeks ago) and visiting a lot more throughout the day. No nesting materials yet and not even a proper nesting shuffle.

    Hi great posts on blue tit's. I have a possible answer as to why blue Tit's do a shuffle in the box. Owl's do what is known as a nest scrape, where they make a indent in the floor of the nest , with their feet to lay the. eggs. As blue tits nest holes in trees, is it possible they do the same thing. And they do the same inside the nest box. What is your thought on this. Many thanks.

    Shall I stop providing seeds when Bluetits are feeding young?Cheers for video.

    • @5mattcolour
      @5mattcolour 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn’t. They’re still a valuable source of food for the adult birds who will be struggling to find the time to feed themselves because of having to feed their young. Also I’ve noticed in years past with my boxes that when the young are ready to fly the nest their first flights have always been from the boxes to my feeders, and have often spent the first few days out of the box on and around the feeding station. I would however strongly advise against putting out large nuts like peanuts unless they’re in a proper caged feeder, as the chicks can choke on them.

    • @FionnODonoghue

      I can't be fully sure as to why but I feel it's to let the female look around ! (As the male hops in first generally, he finds the nest and shows it to the female) Then the male generally hops out on the tree and keeps the place protected from other blue tits basically :) thanks for watching 🙏😁

    It is 30th May today and we have *three* blue tits bringing in nesting materials to our nest box and have done so for the last 2 days. However, we have seen no activity from them today, the third day. Does this indicate that they have abandoned this box or are we just not seeing them when they're busy? I do hope they stay.

    • @FionnODonoghue
      @FionnODonoghue  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm do you have a camera in the box ? is the nest complete ? if you dont have a camera maybe the nest is complete and eggs are starting to be laid or indeed have been laid and are being incubated ! If the nest isn't complete and u havent seen any "improvement" to the nest they may have abandoned it ! hopefully they haven't as i have seen birds disappear only to re- appear a few days later ! be sure to let me know how they get on ! Thanks for watching :)

    • @1justpara
      @1justpara 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FionnODonoghue No camera unfortunately, and I can't really say at what stage the nest is at. We only noticed nesting activity about 2 days ago, but having said that we have had very wet and cold weather for weeks so we've not been in the garden to witness any earlier activity. When we first noticed them bringing in moss 2 days ago, there were 3 or 4 blues in and out of the nest just like in your video, and then only 2 yesterday, they were very, very busy.
      The blue and great tits have been around the garden for a number of years and blues nested a few years ago but we didn't realise that the box needed to be cleaned after each season and so the bees moved in for a while lol. This is a new box and we did hear a lot of *scraping* going on yesterday too.
      I will just have to keep watch and hope they have not abandoned it and yes I will certainly let you know and I will certainly keep watching your vids, than you for sharing them with us all. :D
