  • In this video I install and setup the Pegasus Astro Falcon Rotator with my SkyWatcher Esprit 120 ED. In part 2 I will be using the Flacon Rotator in an imaging session with NINA.
    The adapters I used to install the rotator into the imaging train in front of the field flattener were from Pegasus Astro -
    Female M74 to Male M54 and a Male M54 to Male M65

    Your videos are always so entertaining Logan. I bet your other half was going around and around on what to get you. Hope everything made it through the storm.

      Thanks Jason. Haha, yes she was indeed. Didn't help that I kept changing direction about what I wanted 🤣. Yes we were extremely fortunate compared to other parts of the North Island. The wind was a bit scary and I did add a couple more metal clamp things to keep the obsy roof on. But there has been quite devastating destruction through a lot of places and there are still a lot of people still unaccounted for.
      Looking forward to seeing you guys out at Alpha Scorpii (would love to be out there in person, but watching through TH-cam will do ok).

    Awesome video Logan! That's a great idea putting it behind the flattener and thank you for putting the needed adapters. That was what had kept me from pulling the trigger on this one (I have the same setup as you), as I thought I would have to remove my OAG because of the backfocus requirement. Also love the intro :)

      Thanks very much for checking out the video. It was the suggestion of the guys at Sidereal Trading to do it this way and I am pleased that it hasn't affected image quality at all (tilt etc) so it seems to be a perfect solution when backfocus spacing behind the field flattener is tight. I really didn't want to remove my OAG as it was working so well and guiding was excellent with an rms error sitting between 0.35 and 0.5 most nights. As for the intro... I have a very understanding and tolerant wife 😂.

    Great looking piece of kit Logan and glad Sidereal sorted you out. Amazing how your wife knew your birthday requirements so specifically! :)Hope you're getting some clear skies to test.

      Thanks Ollie. After so many years, Lisa is very tuned in on what I might like for me berfdie or xmas - especially if I drop a subtle hint l like...."I want a rotator"! I've actually had a couple of "mostly" clear nights to give a run and so far...👍👍👍

    Great and very useful video Logan, as I just ordered my Pegasus rotator for my Esprit 100…👍🏻

      Excellent, you will find the rotator works great. The software has been through a few updates since my video so it may look a little different in areas.

    Great video Logan, what a nice piece of kit! How your wife knew just what to get you is a complete mystery mate! They seem have that sixth sense I’m sure🤣 That’ll do nicely on my Esprit, as you said, rotating on the Esprit is a bit of a pain! Looking forward to seeing it in action in part two! All I have to do now is hope my wife can pick up on the vibes, my birthday is in June, so I’ve got 3 months to work on it🤣 Clear skies

    Btw, the tea taste best if you rotate the cup to 273°. CS!

      Thanks James. I'm going to be doing a collab with another astrophotographer here in NZ and he is going to take some images and send one to me so I should be able to match his orientation perfectly (he is also using the Esprit 120 and ASI2600 which also helps).
      Being down here in the Southern Hemisphere where the water goes down the gurgler the other way around, here tea is best rotated to 87° 🤣

    Great video Logan! Seeing your setup has made me pull the trigger and get one. Two questions, did your focus position change for the eaf? and putting the rotator between the scope and the flattener change your focal length? Cheers!

    • @LogansAstro
      @LogansAstro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Greg. Hmmmm, good questions - with regards to focal length, I haven't specifically checked but I haven't noticed any obvious difference. As for change in focus position, I don't recall that being a significant issue but then I just ran an autofocus as usual when I imaged the next target with the rotator in the imaging train. Sorry, I know those answers are a bit wishy-washy but I don't recall either being an issue.

    What would we do without our understanding astro wives! Lol! Looks a great piece of kit, Logan! I'm currently debating a focuser replacement for my Esprit 100 and was looking at either an Esatto 3 or the new Prodigy from Pegasus...been happy with my other Pegasus purchases, so might give it a punt, haven't tried any PrimaLuce stuff yet...best of luck with the Falcon mate! Best wishes from Scotland! :)

    • @LogansAstro
      @LogansAstro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the 2inch Esatto on my Meade 10" and it works really well although I guess it will be somewhat similar to the Prodigy. On my Esprit I'm using the Pegasus Astro Focus Cube2 which also works extremely well but doesn't have the zero backlash of the Esatto and Prodigy. I don't think you could go wrong with the Prodigy as Pegasus Astro seems to make very good stuff (from my experience anyway). Clear skies.

    What is the difference in installing the falcon before or after the field Flattener? What adapter do you use for the front and back for the Esprit 120?

    • @LogansAstro
      @LogansAstro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t have enough backspacing left after the field flattener to add the rotator into the imaging train there, largely because i am using an OAG so I had to add it in before the flattener, but if you have enough backspacing, then by all means add the rotator after the field flattener - that will work perfectly well. The adapter I used for my particularly setup are listed in the description above. Clear skies.

    • @LogansAstro
      @LogansAstro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Nik. We were fine where we live. Wind got a bit scary at times and the whole house was rocking but everything stayed in one piece. Sadly other areas of the North Island have been devastated and more tragically, some have lost their lives. Fortunately we are now getting a bit of a run of finer weather which will help with the clean up and being able to make repairs to critical infrastructure. Hope the weather is being kinder where you are and you are getting some time under the stars. CS

    Nice video Logan, thanks for sharing. I have a similar optical train: esprit100 --> flattener --> qhyoag --> qhycfw --> qhy268m (also apsc). I'm considering to purchase this rotator. Please let me know; have you experience tilt? and vignetting? I'm an indi user so I would not ask you about that :) but I've checked it is compatible. Thanks!

    • @LogansAstro
      @LogansAstro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Miguel. I've actually had a couple of nights imaging with it and I do not see any vignette and the stars are still perfectly round to the corners so no sign of tilt. The rotator is whisper quite. There just wasn't going to be enough backspacing left for me to add the rotator plus any adapters behind the flattener so placing it in front has worked a treat. I haven't used Indi I'm afraid so can't comment on compatibility but sounds like you've already checked that out.
