    ingorance is bliss....
if you have low expectations....you can be happy easier....
but if you your intellect, you have higher expectations from you life, thus harder to be satisfied and be happy

To those asking about the 7 rules...(and those who think it's tl;dw)
    1. Thinking about ideas and content freely - with the deadline far away
    2. Travelling to new places.
    3. Using a wide variety of tools and techniques.
    4. Working on projects that matter to me.
    5. Having things come back from the printer done well.
    6. Getting feedback from people who see our work.
    7. Designing a project that feels partly brand new and partly familiar.

Did anyone else get the sense that this was little more than a massive self plug?
I mean, this guy wasn't offering any specific idea or something to think about, he was just showing off all of his projects, failed ones too, and saying "look at me, isn't this great, aren't you proud of me?"
I don't have anything against his projects, but he didn't even try to incorporate them into a theme, even the title is misleading, he briefly spoke on happiness but the rest was his own personal slide show.

A Stanford professor told me that most of the Ph Ds he knew were miserable people. I was working at his home for a couple days, and I guess my spirit, curiosity, and practical skills impressed him. I went to college but decided afterward to do something that I had a passion for, rather than something that paid a relatively high salary, with benefits, in a manipulated and subsidized market.
Intellect supports ego, and ego can lead a person down a mundane path.

The situation is kinda the same here. We need it to make ourselves happier, for example to buy stuff for ourselves and for the loved ones, but in those countries, where average ppl can only afford their monthly food, and aren't able to buy anything else, then their happiness is f*cked up. In those countries, where ppl don't have to work like a dog for a minimal income, they surely can afford to buy stuff, like iPhone and such. But I'm satisfied with my life and consider myself happy.

@vapaapalestiina i think you missed the point... he is saying that IF you do make more than $50k a year all ready, any further increase in income is unlikely to greatly affect your happiness. It is a stat that defies the common notion that we would be happier if we were richer.

@Joxman2k Wouldn't you agree that the search for happiness is a universal theme? Some of the insights that I've gotten from this talk that I would like to share with you in case you didn't catch them 1) Most of our decisions in life are surprisingly, unconscious. 2) The basis of happiness isn't really how much you make, or how you look like. It depends on the relationships you have 3) Traveling widens your perspective 4) You don't have to compromise yourself- do what you love to do.

The biggest problem is that we have been conditioned to equate happiness with stuff, while the reality is that stuff is just stuff.
Beyond what this guy says, having a distinct purpose in life (which may explain the religion/happiness connection) will make for happiness in spite of the lack of essentials.
He also didn't mention the importance of gratitude and generosity as foundations of happiness.

@neoautism TED isn't only Scientific. It delves into Artistic too. The D in TED stands for Design (Technology, Entertainment Design). Our outer reality mirrors our inner world. Focusing on making happy design projects means nurturing the happiness inside. Yes, some people will agree with him and some will not. I am one of the people who are inspired by this artist. A Sasha Cohen Baron flick doesn't jive with appreciating Stefan Sagmeister so I guess that's why this talk didn't work for you

  • @yudy92
    @yudy92 13 ปีที่แล้ว

@neoautism TED's job from my perspective is to inspire other people... if you are not inspired by these people, keep it to yourself, but dont call them pointless/unsuccessful because like you said, if its internal, then why should you even bother and be part of the comment section if you have nothing useful to say, especially if you dont understand the point of these videos, sometimes its to teach about something new, and sometimes its to try and inspire.

Good subject, but this presentation wasn't very focused at all. If you're interested in the pursuit of happiness, I truly recommend reading Jonathan Haidt's The Happiness Hypothesis. In short: Happiness = basis (emotion) + circumstances (some you can change, some not) + free activities (social, acceptance, values).

  • @yudy92

@AniAddictDaisuken with the unconscious bit with the eggs he is saying (altho he doesnt explain it too well) that our unconscious mind, driven by the suggestion of our names will drive us to make certain decisions.

    @orangepeelpeel
Every living thing wants to be happy and not suffer. Some people just don't want to hurt anymore, so they avoid pain, which is different than wanting happiness.
    1) I agree most behaviors are unconscious, but decisions, by definition, require a conscious process.
    2) Relationships are the key, but not necessarily between people. It is the relationship between perceptions.
    3) I agree
    4) Sometimes we have to compromise to achieve a deeper level of happiness
    :)

Actually i love my job, i get up and can't wait to go. The issues i am bring up is, that the advice from the video is not very helpful the individual who doesn't enjoy his job. If all it takes to get on TED is to say, i find i am happier when i am doing what i want to do when i want to, well then there are millions of people who's comments on TH-cam are far more beneficial. Including yours about, not complaining more then needed, and that we as people over complain unnecessarily

For people who watch a lot of TED talks (or so they profess) it is interesting to me how much most of the commenters on this video lack imagination.

Read between the lines and you will find some very profound ideas.

@david0aloha Well maybe you misunderstand me because I definitely don't mean intelligence in terms of the capacity for absorbing absolute knowledge (the way it is most often used). What I mean is rather the ability to critically analyze and digest information provided into the best possible solution for whatever problem there needs to be solved, and if one dedicated the effort into introspection and analysis of one's own emotions then they can figure it out (not perfectly of course).

Whether you are happy or sad comes from simple comparison of perception of realities.
I can be happy, even though I'm homeless, because I have the ability to walk.
I can be sad because, even though I'm a billionaire, I've lost the love of my life.
If you really want to know what is important to you, just imagine the people, and what they would say about you if you were to die right now.
Then compare that to what you would wish them to say about you.
    :)

I think that basically it can be summed up by the quote in video (paraphrased) "do more of what you wanna be doing, and less/or none of the stuff you don't wanna do"... This however is not helpful because well lets be honest, i am going to go to work tomorrow despite not wanting to, because i need to pay rent.
