One thing (among many) that I always appreciated from Geddy and Alex. Thoughtful honesty.

Agreed. Sometimes people don't understand why our fandom goes that far beyond music. Their friendship, loyalty and integrity are unparalleled. This fantastic interview proves it.

So the 1981 concert at Maple Leaf Gardens that’s part of the Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary…I was there!!! I was 16 and my first Rush concert!! I was and still am 1 hour west of Toronto. I still have clear memory of the show! My kids think it’s so cool that I was there!🇨🇦🇨🇦

A HUGE part of being a Rush fan has always been their personalities. In an industry that gives rise to the superficial and champions a lack of substance these guys have always been the antithesis of that.

You can see how much they still miss Neil even though he was the "new guy". Those three years having to deal with keeping Neil's illness secret and having to put on a brave face must of been so difficult. Alex wrote a song called Western Sunset in memory of Neil.

So powerful and emotional seeing this interview for the second time. Getting a glimpse of their decades long friendship as they celebrate, remember and mourn the loss of their brother. So much more powerful than all the amazing music they produced.

I hope you take the time to watch "The Big Interview" by Dan Rather with Geddy. It is another 40+ minute interview that takes place in Geddy's home. It is amazing and covers a lot topics.

Geddy and Alex are always a great interview. So incredibly intelligent.

  • @jhc2093

So a couple of things with this portion of the clip. 1. As I had mentioned to you previously, for the longest time, Rush wrote and recorded with the intent that it must be playable live, usually only leaving one track on a record to be sort of a “production number”. Witch Hunt is one of these. It was not intended to be played live, but they figured out that if both of them played bass with Taurus pedals, they could pull off a respectable rendition and the Taurus just adds so much sonic heft to it.
    2. Not sure why it matters to us fans, but as you noted yourself. No competition, they’re very supportive of each other, they’re genuine, humble, down to earth dudes. It just feels as though these guys were truly friends in the deepest sense of that word. In terms of the music and the performance it shouldn’t really matter, but for big fans of the band, that friendship has only deepened our appreciation of them.
Beyond the Lighted Stage is awesome for a bunch of reasons, but none more so in that its a story the enduring friendship between the three of them.

There is a huge catalogue of Strombo doing interviews both on his Internet channel, House of Strombo, and also when he was with the CBC doing George Stroumboulopoulss Tonight. What I have noticed is that his style is more conversational than an interview and it really puts his guests at ease and allows them to be comfortable and more themselves. Neil has done the CBC show many times for both Rush and as well as his books and those are great interviews available on TH-cam.
The other takeaway from this interview is that as much as you appreciate them as musicians, these are really likable guys and when you see them in those moments of honesty talking about each other and their friendship it is clear that they are truly friends. How Geddy just acknowledges that although he was doing something that was uncomfortable for him, keeping Neil's illness a secret, it was what his friend needed so there was no question that he would put his friend's needs first.

Regarding the part where Geddy talks about the small possibility of collaborating again, but also doubting it, until the announcement of Neil's sickness, I felt that there was a window of hope as well, even though I doubted it. When the announcement of Neil's passing was made, that small crack in the open window slammed shut, but that really didn't matter anymore because an icon was suddenly gone to us fans.

Since this interview, they have played together several times now. Was incredible seeing videos pop up from them on stage playing at the multiple Taylor Hawkins tribute shows. It was odd hearing different drummers playing Rush songs but for the most part I could get past it because two of my favorite musicians were playing together again. It does show that no one can replace Neil even when some of the greatest drummers step in like Danny Carey from Tool. But is it still AMAZING to see.

You know I watch this and I ache for these guys because we as fans miss Neil for his virtuosity, creativity, master of his instrument and lyrical legend! This guys miss their friend and brother dearly! I relate to Alex’s decision to really morn a person who was so instrumental to his life both personally and professionally! We all morn people we love who pass in different ways based on our relationship how close we were etc and it magnified even more so for lack of a better phrase living on the lighted stage! I’m struck with how some people in regular society can talk to a camera crew and reporters after a tragic accident to a friend or family member and come off as if nothing happened. Me personally I wouldn’t talk to anyone for minimum a couple of days or months or years depending on my relationship with the deceased. If it were my wife or kid I would never discuss it like Neil did with any stranger let alone a tv or radio show. That’s just me but I relate to Neil on that level and it’s great to know Geddy and Alex kept it quiet at the time because that’s would good friends do for each other!

I have not seen this before so this is great! I’ve seen a lot of interviews with a lot of artists. Alex and Geddy just seem like your regular average dudes compared to most. I am glad he brought up Neil and how they had to deal with those tragedies. Hearing that they were planning on doing a European tour and one in South America but didn’t makes me appreciate the fact even more that I decided to go to the R 40 tour. You never know when one of your favorite artists might pass. I found out the day of that Chris Cornell was playing in Detroit. I was like oh that sucks, I wish I would’ve known earlier but I’ll just catch him next time around. The next day word was out that he was dead (supposed suicide).

  • @bradhart6487
    @bradhart6487 ปีที่แล้ว

I can't WAIT for Geddy's memoir! I have never been a fan of Peart's prose writing... his books always seemed a little disingenuous to me - he knows what we all really want is some Rush content...but he's gonna ramble on about motorcycles and dirt roads and stuff that a proper travel writer would be much more skilled at. But I imagine Geddy has a more conversational and funny tone that is going to make his memoir a great read!

I loved this interview when it first came out, and I'm enjoying watching it again with your reaction Justin. This was definitely devastating to the guys, and it was cathartic to hear their side of the story and how they are dealing with it.
