The rest of the story is when there's a knock on someone's door from one or two police officers with some terrible news about one or more loved ones!

A long outstanding problem with the Law on Drink Driving is that there is a permissable level based around 2 pints of Beer, it was set in the 1960's in order to start the change towards stopping drink driving and has not changed since. The level is high enough to give a false sense to drivers that they can have a pint or two and still drive.
It is long past the time to reduce that limit to near zero, to clearly signal that drinking alcohol and driving should never mix. (Zero would not actually be fair for various reasons due to the way the body works)

The thing that I don’t understand is why do they never think about “their job” when they drink drive? It’s only a consideration once they’ve been caught.
If your job was that important, you wouldn’t drink and drive

I've not spoken or had any interaction with my family for 15 years due to drink driving. I'd "only" had a glass and half of champagne at a party before I totally refused to drive my sister 12 miles home. Apparently that wasn't acceptable and I was told I "wasn't over the limit" and "perfectly fine" to drive. Who was right in this scenario, me or them?

    • @seamusoflatcap

You were probably under the limit on that amount but, as it's your licence, it's your decision. You could have asked them if, had you driven and been caught and banned possibly losing your job, would they agree to pay your mortgage or rent and any other bills?

@@seamusoflatcap I agree, I probably would have been under the limit. However, I've always been of the opinion that it's an either/or situation IE: that don't drink - good to drive, drink - don't drive. As an aside, I passed my driving test at 18, but never touched alcohol until I was 25, so I've had my license longer than I've drank.

I've been drunk in charge once. But it was on private land as part of a demonstration organised by the Police to show the effects of drinking on driving (it was also Durham Police, but about 50 years ago). Six of us had to drive a car round a course with various areas to reverse into. We were timed and then each was given a pint of lemonade with from zero to 5 shots of vodka in it. After 20 minutes, we repeated the course. I felt absolutely fine, but took over 30s longer to do the course and demolished one of the obstacles. That was with 4 single vodkas in me, so probably about on the legal limit.
