"Truly good photographs are not taken with the camera. They come from inside you. Your eyes. Your brain. Your heart. Not some cold piece of equipment." So eloquent. What a legend!
Not being afraid to crop heavily and develop non-standard formats is really an eye opener. I always box myself in the classic formats when there's really no need to. He's an inspiration on many levels.
Many thanks for posting - knew of him but have never seen an interview broadcast before. Me 72 years old, photographing for 60 years and still feel like a beginner when I look at work like this:)
It boils down to exposing your own film with limiting factors/broken into controllable steps as well as layering the image. Yet I am 30 n am very versed in Chemistry and Physics. I will never use computer programs to enhance my work.
As an animator, the discovery of Fan ho was the turning point for me, where I gained great, great respect for the art form of photography. The first time seeing his photos I was actually frozen from awe. I was unaware photography could be so beautiful, so wonderfully grand a majestic yet so intimate and personal. Fan Ho truly is a legend.
Thank you for sending me this. I just put this on my iPad system. I plan to study this man's art intensivly, and exclusively for some time to come. I am going to shoot B&W street photography, on my Fujifilm system for the next 6 months. This guy has opened my eyes to B&W again. I started in photography when I was 10. I've always liked B&W the most. I feel very inspired. Like some one threw a glass full of cold water I'm my face. All I can say is: Thanks I needed that!
How wonderful! Thank you very much! Fan Ho was a true Master and one of my favorite photographers, I'm in awe of his work and I still learn from him every day. Also he was so humble and honest and true to his word. A giant!
In these days of color the black & white image allows the viewer to see more than a documentation of an event. It cues the viewer to see the inner meaning of the composition.
I understand his fascination for B and W. The issu is that too often photographers think that their banal pictures are a piece of art because they present them in B and W... Not everybody is an artist. And not everybody is humble with his pictures and lucid with his lake of talent.

Final words are golden words ... Legend
The English captions are amazingly accurate! Whoever translated this, well done!
