  • Fan Ho was a celebrated photographer, film director, and actor, born in Shanghai in 1931 and raised in Hong Kong. He started taking photographs at the young age of 14 and quickly became known for his unique vision and technical skill. In the 1950s and 60s, he captured the everyday life of Hong Kong in a series of stunning black and white images that have since become iconic.
    In this video, we explore the life and legacy of Fan Ho, from his early years as a photographer to his later work in film and his enduring impact on the art world.

    Thanks so much for these photographer spotlights. I'd never heard of Fan Ho, and his work is gorgeous. You're definitely broadening my artist exposure.

    Approaching shadow was all done in the dark room. It was a solid white wall exposure and the model was a relative of his. Not to take anything away from it, but the other 50% was his darkroom work.

    East meet West is probably his most powerful photo. The one you picked is probably my personal favorite of his.

    Thanks for the background of this extraordinary photographer. I am reminded of the approach of Paul Strand, who travelled extensively. When choosing a new location, he preferred to spend time simply walking around, taking in the appearances,light, rhythm, daily life, sometimes for weeks before bringing out his camera. He once said, "Did I express my personality? I think that’s quite unimportant, because it’s not people’s selves but what they have to say about life that’s important.”

    Fan Ho is one of my favorite photographers. The way he used shadow and light as well as composing photos with such feeling. Thank you for showing us this glimpse into his life.
