I bought my 2012 Ecoboost for $4g Canadian not running then put new timing chain then it started right up took it for drive around the block then went to do a WOT boom! Number 5 piston is gone. bought a used engine for $6g with new timing chain install before I put it in the truck everything seems good now. after all the money I spent I still could of sell the truck and double the money but the Ecoboost is so fun to drive after custom tune.

Cool project and absolute steal at $2k. Based on how it sounded when you were cranking, I'd put some money that this thing jumped timing. There's a pretty well-known flaw with the timing components on these gen 1 EB motors and if not corrected it's possible to jump timing. Good luck, can't wait to see you tear into it!

I’ve already torn into it…will release a video on it but let’s just say I don’t think it had an oil change for about 40k miles.

If u need any motor work done like rebuilding heads or the motor I definitely Recommend RMB Motorworks. I have a engine done by him can’t wait to get it back soon. Please spray rust coating in corners of the cab behind the rear doors they WILL RUST OUT! This is a very nice truck and great deal to loose to rust

I will definitely checkout RMB out! And thanks for the pointer on spraying protective coating behind the cab!

@@mischiefmotorworks yea no problem man that’s why my dad sold his 2010 platinum for a 16 XLT is because the corners started to rust out he patched it up then immediately traded it in and the dealer never knew.

@@mischiefmotorworks if you have a sunroof reroute the drains out of the cab corner, make sure third break light seal is good, remove factory tape behind rockers and spray inside car corner and rockers with fluid film and replace with new tape and you’ll be protected from rust

I have been looking at one of these trucks to purchase a used one. I'm leery of buying one with the EcoBoost motor. A twin-turbo V6 spells bad trouble IMO. I saw a nice condition one for sale I may go look at against my better judgment. I'm thinking the V8 is the way to go. But, I'll be following this to see what you encounter.

    • @mischiefmotorworks

From what I have heard Ecoboost aren’t too fun to work on, but everybody I talk to says they pull amazing.

@@mischiefmotorworks Yeah, I can imagine. Plus, If you've ever had to replace a turbo, you know when they go bad, its big $$$. I had to replace one on my ex-wife's car when were married back in the early 90s and it cost 1500 bucks then. That truck has two so it kinda scares me.

It probably just needs timing chains, tensioners, guides, and phasers put in it. These trucks are horrible about these problems so most likely jumped timing causing it not to start

The key to high mileage ecos are oil changes. Ford recommended 10k when I bought my '13 but that's bs. I change mine at 5k with full synthetic and Motorcraft oil filter. Mine only has 94k but it's running strong and the only issue I've had is replacing the valve covers.

Twin Turbos? No, the raptor has twin turbos, regular f150 has a single turbo...
