  • There's no doubt the Ford Barra six cylinder has been a popular engine conversion choice for older Fords. It's refreshing to see Dave's modified turbocharged Fairmont Ghia ESP still retains the factory 250 Crossflow engine. We got a closer look at it whilst it was being dyno tuned by Ford specialist Tunnel Vision.

      Back in the 90s, there was a guy in Adelaide that had a red TD XLE Cortina with a 250 crossflow, 4 barrel from memory, and a big NOS kit, with a 2.75 9", he use to pull the front right wheel to almost 1/2 track, and ran constant mid to high 10s. Yes it was a street car.....No bad for the old days. Don't know what ever happened to them, but with all the dramas of AIR etc, I haven't been out there for 20 years myself.

    Owned cars with that engine (TE Cortina, XD Fairmont Ghia, XF Falcon) for 24 years until 8 years ago. Supposedly the main cause of low redline is a bad rod length to stroke ratio, someone was "working" on a solution but don't know if anything was ever released (I guess it might have been a destroker kit?). Improvement could be had with roller-rockers.
    That door handle - when you have 3/4 movement with nothing then that sort of noise right at the end - generally means it's not long until it's going to go. Internals on the latch were another failure point, from memory you could have just the spring go and be up for $25+ for an entire new mechanism and 90 minutes to put a new one in.

    Not only the same big end size pretty much the same con rod with the same tiny 5/16 bolts. Many years ago I fitted small end bushes to 30 + sets of proto type BA turbo rods for Ford to test. As far as I know that was the only change they made from n a to turbo rods.

    Is this thing at all related to the old 300 inline 6 Ford used in the states back in the day before the Windsor V8 or is it an Australian only thing?

      I maybe wrong in saying this but i think there based along the old pre crossflow 2v similar to what they ran in the early mustangs

    Yeah you're right the XDs and XEs had dodgy door handles lol but I liked them anyway I used to own a XD ute with a 351 auto on gas/petrol good car too bad Ford never boosted the old sixes after they dropped the V8 in 1982.

    Were not all 3.3 and 4.1s crossflow from 1976 on and the previous 200/225 and 250's non crossflow???

  • @davydoo81
    @davydoo81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Falcon 6 has been a constant development, basically the Barra is linked to the very first 170ci 6 in the XK, so if you wanted to find when the 4.1 started, that would be it.. having said that, the Falcon 6 didn’t become a 4.1 till the XY, it didn’t get a cross flow head till XC and it didn’t get the Yamaha developed alloy cross flow head till XE. Then you had the alloy head II (2) in the XF..

      Close but nope. The first was the 144ci Thriftpower Six in the 1960 XK, then the 170ci Firepower Six was a year later. 👍 I put the hierachy under low760's comment. 😎 Also, we had an XD with the Alloy Head II, it was done in 1980, I distinctly remember that badge as a kid growing up like wtf is that? 😂
