Today kids grow up with the internet on every device, they can cultivate their own little world of media consumption. TV from the 50's, 60's, 70's etc. would be watched by kids in the '90s. I was born in 1991 so I am 32 now and I personally I feel like people my age(early 30s) tend to have a lot more knowledge in these eras of pop culture than many people even just a few years younger than me(mid or late 20s)
@@AISlopTheatre Going back and playing the games as an adult who managed to get totally absorbed in the 60s and 70s made a lot of these references waaay funnier.
More specifically on the Jerry Garcia tap water joke, it was specifically LSD that Jerry and his crowd were known to dabble heavily in. There was an incident on Playboy After Dark, when the Grateful Dead were on the show to perform. One of the sound guys for the GD clashed with the TV stations sound guys, and decided to spike the coffee with LSD as a prank. By the end of the show everyone's dancing like mad to "turn on your lovelight" while the host is barely able to string a sentence together.

We didn't, I was 7 and didn't get any references except some current 90s ones. I think once my mom was in the room and asked if I knew who the person referenced was (jerry lewis I think)
Some of these I did get as a kid, especially the old sitcoms (thanks to watching Nick at Nite). As for the humor and references, it was more in line for teenagers and young adults. Heck, when advertising the first game, they mentioned that Dana Gould (Gex’s voice actor and writer of his quips) was best known for his stand-up comedy special on HBO, so they knew their target audience would be young adults.

I really like this video, many people wrongly assume that Gex is outdated and "stuck in the 90s", when in fact most of his references are based on classic film and pop culture, so it's classic, not outdated.
You have a point, but I dont think it makes a lot of sense to release a game that will mostly be played by teens and kids, packed with jokes referencing things far before their time, rather than referencing things they watch, see advertised, or see their parents watch.
Agreed. Everyone kind of forgets that before the 2010's, most people who watched modern TV and movies also got a lot of exposure to older shows and movies since they were often used as reruns and filler and were referenced in shows that were current.
This is what we call misunderstanding your target audience. And by that I mean the devs didnt get what the hell they were doing. Things being "classic" also doesnt make the reference humor better. It needs to have a point.
Especially considering how Nintendo rejected Banjo-Kazooie like 50 times when content reviewing it for the release, all because they kept mishearing the "thank you" voice clip coming from the graves in Mad Monster Mansion as "f*** you". Ironically, BK did get away with some spicy dialogue lines of its own, if only in text form ("How's your nuts, bark-breath?").
I grew up playing the PAL version where Gex was voiced by Leslie Phillips, with the jokes and references tweaked for british humor at the time. Its very surreal to find there were all kinds of different references and jokes in the american version
You know what? As a kid who played both Gex & Gex 2 EtG back in their day, the fact that roughly 60-70% of Gex's one liners went right over my head didn't deter me from enjoying those games. They both were fun platformers and action adventure games with a lot of charm, plus my parents would laugh whenever they were in the room while I was playing and Gex fired off a one liner because they were old enough to understand the jokes. Great video mate!

He would need to have a fart attack and the ability to grapple enemies with his tongue. Maybe suction toes to allow him to crawl up walls etc? Yeah, he would be a great Smash fighter.
First off great video, loved this game. Second, the "I'll murderize yah" is definitely a reference to moe from the three stooges. It was a repeated phrase of his and he said it with that exact pitch and inflection.

Gotta admit, the references in Gex are actually pretty amusing. He's basically Bubsy if he had a good voice, wasn't as annoying and actually had good gameplay.
3:29 Someone’s likely already commented this, but I *think* the reason why Gex says 12 years is because the game was released in 1999; even though the show ended, Gex likely didn’t mean how long the show ran for, rather how long Full House existed at the time, which would have been 12 years in 1999.
A small thing to add, when Gex stated, "We got a 211 in progress baby." He did say a police code, but I think the voice he parodied was Austin Powers when he spoke was the important part of that reference.
Some of these make me wonder about the original context where the lines were used. Man, Gex legit sounds like Homer at times, other times he sounds like a completely different person altogether. The vocal range of his VA is something else.
5:30 : Gex is also doing a parody of 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' 5:57, 6:11, 6:30, 7:37 " all of these instances, Gex is doing an impersonation of Johnny Carson from the Tonight show. Johnny Carson was known for making quirky and oddball references about random celebrities.
Thank you for this. I loved Gex 2 and 3 as a kid and although I still laughed because Gex was funny (his tones and voice changed so much or what he said was so outlandish to me at the time it was just funny without context) a lot of these references flew over my head hah hah I really wish they'd bring him back, would love to see his trilogy remade wit hthe treatment Spyro and Crash received.
If there is ever a new Gex game, I want him to keep making weird 60s and 70s references instead of updating him. Wel... expect for a Dunkey reference, and maybe the Twitch streaming joke.
The line “Has anyone seen Carol Anne” is likely a reference to Poltergeist, where the young girl Carol Anne disappears and is trapped inside of the TV.
In Samurai Night Fever there is a quote "Last time I was here I was dressed as a woman. YES!" That is reference to basketball announcer Marv Albert being caught with a prostitute in 1997 wearing women's panties and a wig. Also "Ancient Chinese Secret huh?" is an ad from the 70s. Nice job overall.

Or "This is just like playing Sonic Jam at Scott the Woz's house"
Or if you get a game over he says "This is just like playing video games at DSP's house"
thats hell on earth
@@alchemistofsteel8099”Don’t worry, Scott. This time, it *is* Gex Night!”
this is like coming from dunkey's video to understand gex jokes and references
5:27 The line is a parody of the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" host, Robin Leach.
I actually think because of the reboot, Fuller House, there's actually 12 years of it now. Gex predicted the future.
This is like smoking crack at Don Cheadles
A small thing to add, when Gex stated, "We got a 211 in progress baby." He did say a police code, but I think the voice he parodied was Austin Powers when he spoke was the important part of that reference.
Some of these make me wonder about the original context where the lines were used.
Man, Gex legit sounds like Homer at times, other times he sounds like a completely different person altogether. The vocal range of his VA is something else.
I need every video I ever watch from now on to end like this one. That gave me so much damn confidence.
“Is it just me or am I engulfed in flames?!?”
Fun Fact: all these voicelines were used in the first GEX for PSX and Sega Saturn and the lines got reused for GEX Enter the Gecko and GEX 3.
5:28 was actually a reference to "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" and not just Aaron Spelling.
I was around 5-10 years old when played Gex, so I didn’t understand any of the references. Thanks for this
I really liked the Carltons going at different speeds for all the songs :)
5:30 : Gex is also doing a parody of 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous'
5:57, 6:11, 6:30, 7:37 " all of these instances, Gex is doing an impersonation of Johnny Carson from the Tonight show.
Gex Trilogy was announced for modern consoles and PC.
At least Gex has good taste in music
This whole video feels like a friday night afterparty on Hirohiko Araki's house
If there is ever a new Gex game, I want him to keep making weird 60s and 70s references instead of updating him.
Wel... expect for a Dunkey reference, and maybe the Twitch streaming joke.
the fact i know about 6 of these references means i’m still young
“Thing with the...what. Wait, where am I!?”

I don't think it's a direct reference to Marv Albert. The reference just doesn't seem to fit. Can you provide a source for the specific connection?
I thought that “ancient Chinese secret” was a reference to Shadow Warrior. \_(•_•)_/
Before we know it Gex 4 is gonna be quoting memes
