    I've only just seen this, I didn't think there was any Gnats still flying. The Mini Cooper Rally of British aircraft! 👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍

      Thanks a lot Matt, glad you liked it! Indeed it is a great little jet, they have a red one as well at North Weald. It seemed to be quite busy that day, would love to try it one day!

    The Gnat is probably one of my favourite aircraft (apart from the Nynja I'm building and my 912 Quantum 😁) as I spent time working on them at Halton during my apprenticeship.
    For our passout stunt we planned to put a Gnat in Trafalgar Square in London as we were working on them in our final phase of training. The wing is one piece held on by essentially 4 bolts so we had one prepared ready to go. We had a furniture pantechnicon on standby, keys to the hangar cut and the route planned. We were going to lift the wing off the fuselage, roll the fuselage into the van and place the wing beside it, then off to London. However the Wing Commander i/c training (Taff Holden of Lightning fame😁) caught wind of the stunt and threatened us that if anything happened none of us would leave Halton, so unfortunately we didn't carry out our plan and the Gnat stayed in the hanger.
    We did go down in history though as the entry who put the Whirlwind helicopter on the Groves-Henderson parade square to mark our first anniversary of arriving at Halton.
    The date was 1st April 1976 😁

    Such a beautiful, elegant design, hard to believe the Red Arrows replaced it with the hunchback Hawk; superior technology is no excuse for an amazing aerobatic team when beauty is the display, speeds are fine with lovely lines, who needs faster! Truly an iconic and sweet aeroplane.

      Actually the Folland Gnat is much faster. Folland Gnat can reach M0.98 level and the Hawk only M0.84. The issue is the Hawk has a turbofan and the Gnat has a turbojet, so not only is it a guzzler, but it requires a high fuel flow for moderate cruise speeds, so it’s more costly on maintenance.

    Lovely to see this in action. My dad was trainer on Gnats at Valley. My channel lists a video of him describing a Gnat crash he was involved in (XR541) at Mona in 1978.

    They also have a genuine Gnat F1 which shot down sabres in the wars between India and Pakistan. I know this as I am a friend of the gnat display team and visit every other weekend with my dad if I can. The pilot flying the Yellow Gnat is a chap called Edwin. The Yellow Gnat which is known as G-MOUR although it has XR-992 as its registration. Anyways just a bit of information from me.

      @LIONAV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot for the interesting background info, really appreciate that you took the time to write it up! I saw a red Gnat as well, would that be the "genuine" one that was in war before? Hope you are doing well!

      @@LIONAV Hey! The Red Gnat I think was from RAF Valley. But the Gnat F1 is a genuine war veteran it sat in the desert for 20 years I’ve been told. We have have just found out that the F1 can go to around 60000 feet before the cabin pressure lights comes on.

    I have a question. Why did the Gnat have twin wheels on the nose? and was it a stearable or castoring nose wheel?

    • @LIONAV
      @LIONAV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don`t suppose it is stearable, good question on the twin wheels! I`d guess it is probably a matter of design rather than a functionality since many similar aircraft have single nose wheel, although if someone knows better please do correct me!

    • @grahamthebaronhesketh.
