    Thanks for the video. The problem facing any long steam excursion is the lack of infrastructure for water and fuel. A great vacation would be a coast to coast excursion with old heavy weight coaches and sleepers. To my way of thinking I would rather spend the money on that than a two week sea cruise in an outside cabin.

    Now this I’d love to see in person ! My step father in law retired from working for Southern RR for 45 years. He told me that he drove the 611 several times, I’m not sure if this is true or not since he’s 94 years old now and forgets some things, he does keep himself busy all the time. Love this video and thank you for making it and sharing :-))

    Me & my mom rode behind on the 611back in July 2015 from Roanoke to Lynchburg & back. I wanna ride on the 611 again. That was fun.

    Who’re the 2 diesels tacked on behind her?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One is one of Norfolk Southern's "heritage units", the other is a diesel owned by the North Carolina Transportation Museum.

    Is the N&W #611 wearing the same whistle that it wore during the 1990s? Because it sounds a little different now than it was during the 1990s.

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, to be honest with you - someone with more whistle expertise would have to chime in here.

    • @WoodJack99
      @WoodJack99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the whistle that came from fellow J-class engine 610. 611 hasn’t had the original one for quite awhile.

    Great video I was actually next to you at the grade crossing when the 611 departed Asheville. Also Jim I was wondering will you be in Illinois next month to film the nickel plate 765 excursion?

      +Jonathan Buck Hey - I remember you! :) Sadly, no, I'll be on my way home from a two week work trip to Salt Lake City. Actually, I'll be flying home the Friday before the trips - so there's a 99.9% chance I won't get to see it out there.

    what is your secret for keeping your camera so steady if it's a tripod i'm getting one lol

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good tripod - any tripod will do, but a good tripod is better, both for sturdiness and smooth camera movements.

    Why does the whistle seem a bit lower than last year? Is the engineer just not pulling hard or is the pressure too low?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michigan Rail Productions Different whistle altogether.

    • @MichiganRailProductions
      @MichiganRailProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Where did they get it from?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not 100% sure, I think it was one of the Fire Up 611 people.

    • @MichiganRailProductions
      @MichiganRailProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh. Well, it is definitely not the 611 whistle replica the PM 1225 wore to promote Fire Up 611.

    • @SteveoGTO
      @SteveoGTO 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's the Hancock 3 chime whistle from 610.

    I wonder what parts of 611 are original, last I heard. She had to get new drive wheels.

    • @14thStreetProductions
      @14thStreetProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no no no, she had to get new lead axles for the leading truck. as for the engine itself, a majority is the original product from 1950.
