    While the west coast and parts of the midwest gets the beautiful SP 4449 Daylight, I am glad we have a beautiful steamer of our own here in NC with the N&W 611.

    I saw it at the museum a few years aga before it left. Being a Virginian makes me proud when I look at this great machine created in our own Roanoke Shops in the 50s

    Oh, this whistle is so different from last year's! I understand that this is the authentic original whistle. It sounds like a steamship whistle.

    Such a beautiful locomotive. My favourite US steamer. Her whistle is starting to mellow - didn't sound so great when they first cleaned it. Sounding more like her old self again.

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      well, about that, she was wearing a UP FEF-3 whistle last year (off of 833, I believe). This year, she's wearing 610's whistle.

    • @laurieharper1526
      @laurieharper1526 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah. That explains it. Thanks. The current one is closer to the sound of the whistle on older films, which I prefer.

      The old one from the 90s was her actual whistle, owned by the Claytor family. It was taken off in an internal dispute between members of the Fire Up 611 project when they put the "Spirit of Roanoke" decals under the cab windows.

    611 really had her work cut out for her on Five Row that day. If they're going to load her that heavy on steep grades, they really need to track down a trailing truck booster for her. Or else get somebody with VERY deep pockets to get the 1218 out of mothballs and run them doubleheaded. I vote for option #2.

      She's really under-loaded. most of her uphill climbs she's at full idle. the Tractive Effort output is immense however the locomotive design doesn't weigh enough to put it all down. It's like when you peel out in your car, you break the friction point by adding too much power in at once. you have to slowly build it up, but when going uphill the loss in speed from one slip compounds to gradually slow the train down. it's the engineers Duty to keep the slip to a minimum whilst maintaining forward progress. Her lightness helps her at full speed, where she can fully utilize her tractive output to reach a higher top speed unburdened by the tonnage required to give her full output at the low end.

    Great video! Thanks for posting. Just wish Norfolk Southern ended their steam program. Now I have to go to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to see steamers, i.e., the Southern #4501 MS Class Mikado, which is my favorite steam engine of all time.

    What in the world was hanging off the side of the Orient Express car!? Was that a trash bag!? 35:33
    also 46:48 that is just awesome, to see the true elevation and to see a train going up and down a few hills, that would be amazing to see in person

      One of the main reasons the NS lawyers convinced the company to end excursions again. Too much liability. Not just from the public riding on NS tracks, but also from people trackside. A year after this, the last 611 excursions ran on NS and a year later Amtrak banned charter trains making any kind of public excursions on class 1’s impossible except for UP’s occasional excursions. Steam is now relegated to display or on non class 1 and tourist railroads. Well, it basically was like this from 1995 and up in the east until NS started a new steam program with Wick Moorman. Oh well, I got to ride behind 765 twice in PA and behind 611 in northern Virginia June 4, 2016 and at Strasburg Rail Road Sept 2019. I just lost my mom in the hospital on June 14 and she rode all those excursions with us. We couldn’t travel far the past few years due to her worsening breathing.

      +railpast not sure if the train was sold out to Lynchburg, but the Asheville trip sold out within an hour of ticket sales opening to the public. and there were hundreds, if not thousands, of chasers on both days.

    I think that streamlined diesel looks out of place with the GEVO and 611. Don't get me wrong. It's a nice looking locomotive, but I like the 611 and GEVO more.

    How late was it when it finally got to the NCTM on April 9th?

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ShadowSteel18 about 2 hours, mostly due to delays at Lynchburg involving a weak firehose which caused the train to miss its window southbound, forcing it to wait for all those freights i ended up recording at Hurt.

    • @VirtualRailfanProductions
      @VirtualRailfanProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JBS That's a pretty big delay. The same thing happened with the Frisco 1522 here in St. Louis during her last excursion on September 29, 2002. She was held up for various freights and didn't get back to downtown St. Louis well after 9 PM.

    • @adambass2828
      @adambass2828 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ShadowSteel18 we pulled into Spencer and stopped and I walked up to the engine I looked at my phone it 10:03pm April 9th I rode that day we were delayed from the beginning got off NCTM prop and onto the main we had to stop and wait we where waiting on freight all day plus alot of slow orders I was told we arrive 30 minutes late into Lynchburg and we didn't leave Lynchburg till I think 4:30-5:00 then we stopped again at Danville to change emts we were stopping and starting all day but it was a grand trip she put on a show from my dome seat

      Oh no, I love that type of directly overhead shot where you end up in the steam cloud. That's exactly what I was going for. The only issue with that shot was that it was facing directly into the low sun so I couldn't start the shot as early as I wanted to.
