  • Dolby Vision vs HDR10! In this HDR Showdown, I take you through what both have to offer. Click 'Show More' for details I did miss. Dolby Vision or HDR10? Who will win this HDR Showdown? Let's find out! Click "Show More" for missed information.
    Some info I missed. Thank you Michelle Alexandria!
    "What makes Dolby Vision inherently better, theoretically, is that Dolby Vision is an End to End solution. Films (all of the big budget ones) are now being shot in Dolby Vision and encoded with special meta data, that meta data is then translated into Dolby Vision HDR which is tied directly to your Hardware. So since you have an LG TV with Dolby Vision. The content will be optimized for your specific content. So you will get HDR tailored for your TV and Dolby Vision is applied at the Scene level as opposed to the entire picture like HDR10. The other nice thing about Dolby Vision is that since it is Hardware Based, Dolby Vision TVs have to meet stricter, higher end spec requirements to run it, so you know you are getting a top of the line HDR TV and your DV TV will most likely also have HDR10 (since that's software) so you'll have both. Unlike HDR10 which is Software based, therefore HDR10 TV will never be able to support Dolby Vision."

    Great to see the difference between the Dolby Vision version and the HDR version of Marco Polo. I do however have a problem with some of your explanations. Yes Dolby Vision is 12 bit, but it is down sampled to 10 bit on the tv. Dolby does claim that a down sample from 12 to 10 bit enables them to create a more precise color gradient in 10 bit, but neither that nor the 12 bit are the main reason behind the better quality on a properly mastered Dolby Vision source. HDR10 has a standard value that is used during the entire movie. Dolby vision is frame by frame based which means that the tv is optimized for each frame, and not just optimized for an average of the movie. That optimization does bring out more details, and that is the main reason behind the better picture quality of Dolby Vision compared to HDR10 at the moment.

    Thanks for your video. I have been working on mastering and distribution of HDR content for 4 years. There are several issue, first 12-bit and 10-bit are signal formats and does not directly translate to better viewing experience! The viewing experience depends on how well your viewing device is capable of showing you the quality of the signal, e.g. the quality of the TV panel (type, gamut, actual bit-depth, internal processing, tone-mapping etc... Also, the main difference between 12-bit and 10-bit HDR has to do with the PQ EOTF of the signal and encoding. The PQ or ST2084 is designed to have every code value correspond to a certain nit-level which causes steps in the signal. the extra 2-bits in the 12 bit will allow for better-preservation of the information between the steps. however, at the moment there are no encoders on the market that is optimized for PQ or HDR (they do have HDR settings, but internally they are still optimized for gamma signal). Which means until we get there those extra-bits wont translate to a perceptible difference!
    Also, your Marco Polo example is INCORRECT! that is not the difference between 10-bit and 12-bit. that is the difference between how the two versions were mastered! having worked with major studios, more than likely they did the DolbyVision HDR first and the HDR-10 was just an after thought and it was not mastered to the same creative quality of the DolbyVision version! ( it is not technical)
    REC2020 is is used as a container in both HDR10 and DolbyVisionHDR. both signals are mastered to D65-P3 and re-contained in rec2020 for mastering and distribution!
    If you need more info about HDR you can dm me.

    From what I have seen, I prefer HDR10 because it is much brighter. I think you need to have a a 1000 NITS+ OLED to fully appreciate Dolby Vision and the darkness not being a problem. I have a Sony x900H which looks amazing in HDR 10.

      Dolby Vision is actually brighter. HDR10 only goes up to 1000 nits while Dolby Vision goes up to 10000 Nits. I'm guessing that current bright movies are only operating at about 2000 nits. "Nits" is a measure the brightness of a light source.

    Solution: Get support for both if you can! My Denon AVR-4400H and my Vizio 65” 4K M65-E0 BOTH support HDR10 and Dolby Vision. 4K formats are still in a volatile state. TV is NO WHERE NEAR set to broadcast 4K content anytime soon. All we really have in terms of native content is Blu Ray discs and some select streaming. I know this post is a year old but the standard still isn’t rock solid yet. At this point, if I was looking for these kinds of products, I’d keep my options as open as I could. The reason I went with the Denon & Vizio is the price to performance ratio. The quality vs. the features. Luckily I can say I can support both for years to come without worrying it will be totally obsolete in a year or 2. Do your research before purchase folks! Dolby Vision is probably the better format overall visually but true 12 bit displays are few and far between and the format winner is usually determined on which is the easier to support at the time which is probably HDR10 right now.

    You said Rec2020 from DV. Rec2020 is an International standard and nothing to do with Dolby. Rec2020 color space applies to both 10 bit and 12 bit color mapping, and is used in HDR10. It just happens that displays today are just barely able to cover the majority of DCI P3 (Cinema standard), and producing close to 70% of Rec2020. We may see Rec2020 capable displays as early as 2020 (nice marketing tie), but not today regardless of DV.

    Something i don't understand: if i can see the differences in my old TV, why are those extra details and colors not on the HDR 10 verion? Again, i'm watching the vid in an old 1080p screen and i can see those dolby vision extra colors :/

      @HenriHolstila 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I was thinking about the same thing.

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Paulo Lameiras: Like +Henri Holstila, I was also thinking the same thing. Basically, whenever we watch stuff about technologies that we can't see, it's like a colorblind person trying to see how the colors of something have improved. We just can't get it with our screens, so we don't know what is actually seen. Certainly, HDR10 should be better than your current screen, but why do both HDR types not just appear as good as your screen can possibly handle? I think that generally, at least in advertisements if not here, the video is graded, with saturation and contrast boosted to give us an effect, but in real life, it all looks different and so we have to see it in person. Of course if they wanted to simply add a reddish color to the sky, any TV (that is not black-and-white) is capable of that. So yeah...why does it not appear to be there? +Andreas Tzimboukakis says that it may be due to incorrect tonemapping on one of the TVs (neither of which can actually play 12 bit content).

    • @maxstrmus4252
      @maxstrmus4252 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it has more to do with the player and the TV able to decode those additional details in the picture.

    • @sardasert
      @sardasert 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      well you dont see the colors hdr10 is missing. you are seeing "a version of those missing colors captured by a normal camera" used by the youtuber. when the camera sees those colors it matches them to the nearest defined color in its abilities. imagine you are sitting with a friend and you hear a strange sound but your friend doesn't. then when you two meet with a 3rd friend you are telling the story "we were sitting and i heard a sound like (tschchstschs), but my friend#2 didnt hear it." friend#3 turns into friend#2 and says: "are you deaf, how can you not hear it? even I can hear that sound".

    • @Heliosvector
      @Heliosvector 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You dont see them, because they dont exist. Those details were remastered with Dolby vision. Its not that they were edited in, its just that the creatorsof the content would normally compress data to 8bit colour and only kept in uncompressed for 12 bit when they had dolby vision. Sothe HDR10 file isnt getting the same access of information that a dolby vision stream is getting. So pretty much any HDR10 capable tv is able to display Dolby Vision 10bit, but some have not paid for the licencing.

    This is inaccurate. How can you compare Dolby Vision (12 bit) versus HDR 10 (10 bit) on a TV that has a 10 bit panel? You can't. Your overview does not make sense in that regard. The same way as TVs with 8 bit panels cannot be proper HDR TVs if they cannot meet the wider colour gamut required to properly display HDR content. So the question is, how do you get 4,096 gradient levels on a 10 bit panel like the LG OLED E6? You won't be able to measure this until 12 bit panels become commercially available. As far as I know, there aren't any yet.

    • @SOMEONE-ME
      @SOMEONE-ME 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Well- this video has many false or misleading statements.
      Your example is just one of them. As you said- even professional grading displays are not capable of reproducing 12bit.
      DolbyVision as technology is superior, but this is yet to be fully utilised in real world, specially at home environment. At the moment you can forget about 12bit v 10bit as most consumer TVs can't even reliably do 10bit (and those mentioned details have nothing to do with 12bit at all). Best thing about DolbyVision is that it carries metadata per scene (not per whole movie like HDR10), which can be reliably used as a reference to adjust each scene for each display capabilities.
      Even for no-techy people:

      The biggest differences between the two are caused by bad Remastering of the HDR10 content. Obviusly, if you are paying for Dobly vision you are expecting to get proper support from the developors.

      Brandon Westover Note I stated they put w series panel into their A1 series OLED when it comes to Sony. Yet there no need for it or any panel I think. Since it uses no LED lighting of any kind. Instead it using totally independent self lighting pixels.

      I agree with officialpartychannel, dolby has an advantage now but at the end of the day people and manufactures prefer to not spend money when possible so someone will bump up hdr10 to 12 bit eventually which... may I be honest? I have a 10 bit panel... like a real 10 bit 1440p monitor that doesn't need to do stupid HDR trickery to achieve what HDR is trying to do and when compared to my other 8 bit 1440p screen, I've never noticed a difference between the two until someone whips out a still image for me to look at and really take the time to look at it to see those differences and let me point this out, 10 bit removes all banding effects that might exist in a picture already. HDR might not be a gimmick (It is doing other things) but the extra bit of colors, those 12 bit over 10 (or even 8) is a gimmick, just one that is not going away anytime soon.

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Come to think about it as I really do sit down and think of it, this is basically prologic all over again, the video itself is not in 10 or 12 bit, its in 8bit and a codec is sent to the TV along with it, dolby's software picks it up and decodes the signal. Its not at all a true 12 bits of color its just TRYING to convince you that it is 12 bits, just like prologic was not real surround sound. It was just trying to convince you it was.

    • @AsreiMurasame
      @AsreiMurasame 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's highly dependent on the individual. I have sensitive eyes and can notice differences between monitors and panels immediately. (it's also not that hard to tell when a monitor is using dithering.) from a 6, 8, 10, or 12 bit panel it becomes much harder after 12~14 because of how smooth the gradients become. I have a large number of individuals who claim they cannot see a difference between 60 and 120~144 Hz. I can as well as some friends and family I know. I had at one time been called by my parents and asked why their PC on their 144 Hz monitor had become "slow" like everything had slowed down. They had been doing adjustments and accidentally reduced the refresh rate to 60. While they did not know it was the refresh rate that was impacted they could immediately tell that the rendering had slowed significantly just by minimizing a window. On a side note I have been calibrating monitors and TV's for years. Which may attribute to why I am so used to seeing the differences.

    Hey Techno Dad, Your quote from Dolby was pretty much my mindset going into 4k to begin with. I wanted stuff good enough to see what kind of differences I would see with the new tech, and then decide after a few years, what the direction was to go. Right now, I'm still content with 1080p as my main source of content, but HDR 10 makes enough difference for me that has kept me interested in 4k content in it's current state Because of the visual impairment I deal with, while I am able to appreciate good quality video, audio (music, and movie soundtracks ) hold more interest in audio. I was more excited over the 5.1 soundbar from Vizio i put in the bedroom over the 4K tv I got last year.
    Actually, I find it more exciting to hear and evaluate a surround mix, that previously I've only heard in 2 channel Great video, have a great day!

    You can't compare HDR10 and Dolby Vision on a LG OLED as HDR10 will just look inferior due to technical limitations. If you watch HDR10 content on a flagship Samsung TV then it's clear that 1.) HDR10 can look as detailed as Dolby Vision and 2.) current OLED TVs can't keep up in terms of brightness. Also there are currenty no mass market TVs available which feature a 12 Bit panel, so Dolby Vision will have to wait a few years longer to make best use of this format.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Samsung TVs don't do Dolby Vision, so you can't do this comparison on aSamsung. I'm still wondering why Samsung fanboys still bring up the brightness issue. The OLED can create a perfect black level, and therefore doesn't need to be as bright. Samsung has to have above 1500 nits to make anything that comes close. And if you watched the video, I stated twice that TVs now will not take full advantage of Dolby Vision.

      Sony's X1 Extreme chip i the Z9D is awesome, and I can't wait to see that in the A1 OLED coming out later this spring. That may be one of the best PQ TVs in 2017. They are also supporting both Dolby Vision and HDR10 with the new A1.

    • @mikejohnson8391
      @mikejohnson8391 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Techno Dad correct get this it thanks to z9 there going be A1 OLED later in year they took Z9 tech to next level but unlike z9 which is for personal use A1 is for family use like my home where there 3 other people living in House. and there standard picture black levels and so on must be meet or be yelled at is why I pick Sony OLED because I get needed nits color brightness level black levels frame rate for my brother video games and my and dad get needed black levels for his sci-fi films and color and brightness needed for films like into heart of sea which mom likes. And I get Dolby Vision and hdr support needed for Netflix progress like crown and Dolby Vision with HDR10 for Netflix program Daredevil.

    • @mikejohnson8391

      agree and they also use legendary imaging mapping tech. only normally projectors uses they been making for past ten year or more which they call bit-mapping how it perk I don't know. they say it supposed allow each pixel allow tv help to make more true to life images. instead on how much brightness and black levels the A1E OLED they are concentrating on how true to life images tv will show. note it have 3 years parts and labor and 24/7 tech support and troubleshooting help. so they say we will see once it hits market if all this is true.

      Mike Johnson Sony is using LG display oled panels. The g6 oled by LG for example far surpasses the uhd alliance requirements showing 99% of p3 colour; in terms of oled patents LG owns more than any of the other major tv companies the TVs come with 5 year warranty and 24/7 tech support with parts available for at least 5-7 years. The banding issues etc have been addressed with the 2016/17 oled's by LG the only downside is motion processing however it's barely noticeable. Sound wise harman kardon speakers are with LG's TVs which give surprisingly good sound and format wise they support both hdr standards with a update coming soon for HLG etc.
      Don't get me wrong Sony make good tv's but specs are one thing real world performance another and LG is known for higher customer satisfaction and longer support for products.

    I see vertical lines across all three but as theory would suggest the 12 bit is the smoothest....though it is not that much better than the 10.
    Consider it is a lot easier for us to discern grey scale variation in tones than if these were in color because our eyes have far more luminance sensitive receptors (rods) when compared to color sensitive ones (cones). Thus it would be even harder to discern variation between any two adjacent gradations in a color based gradation pattern. (some colors like blue and red are less chromatically acute than others...green which dominates the cones).

However, the Samsung seems to come out on top in all the reviews. So my question is; now that I’ve got a tv which supports Dolby Vision, will I ever need HDR10 instead? I.e. are there any benefits of HDR10 that Dolby Vision does not have?

    LG’s 2017 65uj7700 offers Dolby Vision in a side-lit local dimming LED IPS. I know it is not ideal, however it is thousands less than the upper echelon 65” oleds that offer Dolby vision support. The question is this, while watching Okja on Netflix, the Dolby vision image setting automatically activated. However, there is no way to know what are the more advanced D65 (6500K white balance) settings to manipulate on this specific image setting for the most accurate color? Knowing that Rtings.com’s settings recommendation was for SDR and UHD, what is there by way of calibration files to use when Dolby Vision settings of any supported TV are toggled (something along the lines of a Spears & Musil type media file encoded in Dolby Vision with gradients and color swatches to manipulate contrast, brightness, color settings and the like for your viewing room to get as close to D65 on Dolby Vision content)?

The LCD and OLEDs are still not where Plasma was. Should be in a few years. Definitely want Dolby Vision after your comparison which puts Samsung out of the race.

      Hi! Yeah, it's bit early to tell what's going on with TVs. Samsung's MicroLED might beat out OLED but it may not have Dolby Vision. All we can do is wait and see. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
