Hantzsch-type reaction - Dean Stark

  • I set up a Hantzsch-type reaction. To this end, a mixture of the thioamide and the bromoacetone in toluene was refluxed overnight. Before that, I had tried several different conditions without success. Now, since the condensation between these two molecules involves the formation of water, I thought it would be a good idea to carry out this reaction in a Dean-Stark apparatus, in order to remove the water generated and drive the reaction toward completion. However, the reaction went south.

    Did you check the reaction mixture with TLC to decide whether the reaction failed or not

      Why??? O please, don't worry. This is chemistry; things hardly ever work out your way. Just keep trying, till you find the proper conditions or a route that actually works. :)
