Just a tiny, pointless nitpick from a Finn: The "I" in "Ievan polkka" is a capital "i", not an "L". Don't worry about it, it's not a real issue at all, but thought I'd mention it and add some context in case some people are curious about the song's origins.
"Ieva" (with a capital "i") is the Finnish female name "Eeva" as it'd be pronounced in a Savonian (Eastern Finland) dialect and the "n" at the end indicates genitive case. And as one might have already guessed, "polkka" simply refers to the polka dance and the type of music it's usually danced to. So, in standard Finnish dialect the song name would be "Eevan polkka", and you could translate it into English something like "Eva's polka". The song's lyrics tell a story from the viewpoint of a boy courting Ieva/Eeva, a girl who snuck away from home to a dance party against her mother's wishes.

The community takes those ideas and interprets them in different ways, creating their own canon. Some canon (like entire character personalities) is shared by the community and just becomes accepted over time. But at the end of the day, even that's fluid, and everything is up to how it's all interpreted. Is Touhou a comedy story? A symbolic tale? A sad manga? Ecchi? That song pretty much encapsulates the ENTIRETY of this era of Nico Nico memes to a point where it SOMEHOW crossed over into the English web despite very few people in the english space even knowing what most of the references were.
I remember listening to that ONE very famous recording of the Medley where a large group of Nico Nico performers sang the whole thing. The original is no longer on Nico Nico but it's been uploaded to youtube several times.

Also, I'd like to make a little correction regarding 10:40: The song _itself_ is not called "Fukkireta", it's called "Ochame Kinou" (おちゃめ機能).

Same though, I wish I were old enough to see when the community was thriving back then.
There is a popular term that specifically talks about this time period, its called "NicoNicoDouga Heyday" and its everything that you can imagine like video slicing, Danmaku comments that goes so fast, and probably a core part of internet at this point. This time period is considered to be place near "the Lost Decade" and the late heisei era.

As a vocal synth history fanatic, i wanted to add some additional information to the Vocaloid section!
So for one, Vocaloid has always been a proprietary software, meaning several companies got permission to officially release voicebanks for it.
The most well-known ones - Meiko, Kaito, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len and Megurine Luka - were all released by Crypton Future Media. They're known by fans as the Cryptonloids (though Crypton later stopped releasing new versions of their voicebanks on Vocaloid and instead made their own software, Piapro Studio which is why Crypton doesn't officially refer to them as "Vocaloids" anymore.)
Some other well-known ones are Gackpoid and Gumi by Internet Co Ltd, Fukase and V Flower by Yamaha, Oliver by PowerFX and SeeU by SBS Artech.
The proprietary nature of Vocaloid is the reason you'll pretty much never see Gumi on stage with Miku or anything like that: They were developed for and released on the same software, but are distributed and legally owned by different companies.
UTAU is different because it's shareware software and voicebanks can be created and distributed freely (for the most part) by users. For legal and practical reasons, you couldn't just take a Vocaloid voicebank and release all the associated audio files for people to put into UTAU so they'd get free Hatsune Miku, sorry to crush your dreams but Miku will be expensive for as long as Crypton can make money off of her lol.
Another thing is that if you hear stuff like "Miku is 16" and "Rin and Len are 14 year old twins" you'll be pretty shocked at a ton of vocal synth songs and content, both new and old. This has one of the most common debates in the community for as long as vocaloid has been popular, but the general sentiment is that their "official" ages and relationships aren't to be taken too seriously, and as such you'll find a good amount of stuff like nsfw songs featuring Miku and the Kagamines or songs where the Kagamines aren't siblings but partners or genderbent versions of eachother. The whole point is that voicebanks are mostly blank slates to project any lyrics and story onto as the user sees fit. In some songs Miku's a self-centred idol, in some a murderer, in some a murder victim, in some a lesbian, in some a meta-commentary on the state of the Vocaloid community. She can be anything!
Final thing to note here is that the voicebanks don't make the songs, their producers do. This has been another huge problem in the community for years, where the most popular youtube uploads of songs often credit them "by Hatsune Miku" instead of "by Ryo" or "by Hachi".
This is especially relevant in the cases of deceased producers like Wowaka and Siinamota/PowapowaP, who's songs have gone years being credited to the instruments used to make them instead of the people who mastered the instruments.
Anyway, hope someone finds this interesting, loved the video and thanks for including my suggestion of Leekspin :)

      @wevebi ปีที่แล้ว +6

i just found this channel but i loved the video and wanted to help, so i'm bringing some more points about vocal synths. please correct me if i'm wrong. also, the only interesting ones are on the end so feel free to skip ahead
      1. kagamine rin & len are a very interesting case of the personality thing that was brought up in the original comment. their literal names suggest they are "mirror sounds" so that could be interpreted as basically anything from twins to just musical counterparts.
      2. regarding about vocaloids having ages, it's something that isn't always specified by the companies themselves and just agreed by the fans. a different reason people might create different character takes to represent the voice is because producers can use vocaloid to tell their own original or real stories.
      3. for obvious reasons, people will stick to making songs *for* the character on cases like oliver and kaai yuki, which are vocaloids voiced by actual children at the time they were made. but musically, children-type vocals make dark songs much more meaningful or scary. just like most of the vocaloids, oliver and kaai yuki have a bunch of songs about strong topics that hit different when you hear the story told by a "child". even then, they still have cute songs being made to cheer people up, because it also feels different coming from an innocent voice.
      4. as brought by the original comment, vocaloid works are made by producers. something interesting to add is that most vocal synths will sound plain or boring when plug-and-played. this leads to tuning, which is a process of "vocal manipulation" to give emotion or a singing style to the voices. this is why different producers can make the same voice feel like an instrument, robotic, surreal or human. the process of tuning can also be applied onto human voices. for example, there's a person that edits the human vocals for some of the living tombstone songs. this does not mean the singer is bad and can not be comparable to auto-tuning in practice, since the process of tuning in vocaloid is manual.
      5. producers who aren't into making original songs may make covers using vocaloid, just like stated in the video on the case of ievan polkka. generally, cover artists make versions of vocal synth songs, but you can find a lot of covers of western pop songs, for example. some covers are also lost media, but i believe a lot of them are saved.
but these are mostly for context about the culture thing, so on to the useful stuff:
*6.* there's an utau producer that disappeared from the internet and does not wish to be named. i don't remember the exact story, but they didn't like how their songs started getting attention and went gone. now, a lot of producers make songs in their style as a "tribute", but some of them later move on to their on style, such as _x0o0x. they keep the charm of having an unnamed video for their songs.
*7.* there are some communities on twitter and discord dedicated to vocaloid lost media! although i'm not a part of any, it seems they recover a lot from nico nico douga too.

    • @MistKitten
      @MistKitten ปีที่แล้ว +3

I remember first stumbling into the "Ran Ran Ru" thing because of one of three ways:
    1. I was reading a bunch of creepypasta which led me to stuff about Giygas from Earthbound/Mother 2 and that's where I saw a Ran Ran Ru version of Pokey Means Business (I think I still have it saved in my favorites from all the way back in 2009 if it still exists here).
    2. stumbling upon M.U.G.E.N. videos via a rabbithole of watching clips of Bleach episodes (Soul Society Arc because I got tired of waiting for Adult Swim to premiere new episodes). The player played Ronald McDonald against various other characters like Colonel Sanders and Wolverine.
    3. Listening to random video game tracks, where I heard "Pokey Means Business" for the first time, which led to finding said Ran Ran Ru mentioned above. Also discovered Touhou tracks in the process before I even learned what Touhou was.
2009/2010 was a crazy time for me.
Speaking of Touhou, I had a classmate that was absolutely obsessed with it. His laptop had a looping wallpaper that featured the various girls in the game and had several iterations of the shooter. Even his screensaver was Touhou themed ( I think it was the animation from the "Bad Apple" video IRCC). Game looked fun enough, but far too unforgiving for my taste.
I've never heard of the man referred to as "aniki", but I do remember seeing the clip of him taking a swig from a bottle of beer, though I can't remember, for the life of me, where.
I've listened to Omoide wa Okusenman more times that I can count (also from around the same time I found Ran Ran Ru, so those two are somewhat linked). Also, I reccommend you listen to the JAM Project version of the song if you haven't yet (seriously, it's great).

Just to correct a statement, while ZUN is the sole maker of the mainline Touhou games, the decimal Touhou games is a different matter. The Fighting games (7.5, 10.5, 12.3, 13.5, 14.5, 15.5) are made by Twilight Frontier, though the characters and stories are of course by ZUN himself. Sunken Fossil World (17.5) is also made by Twilight Frontier.
Also think you could have put a bit more emphasis on the big thing about the Touhou NND vids is Touhou's music, since that is primarily what ZUN is known more for anything, his music. But otherwise, how you described things was perfectly fine.

Ronald McDonald or Donarudo Makudonarudo/ranranru- was such an amazing meme with its remixes- it just exploded in popularity back in the day. I still watch NND MAD remixes of anime like Lucky Star and Higurashi set to Night of Nights, Red Zone, Sky High, Ievan Polkka, UN Owen Was Her, etc. I know it's like such a specific niche of videos but these are so nostalgic.

The amount of pure nostalgia this gave me was so fulfilling 😭 even as a tween who was super into anime I remember seeing all these videos and absolutely losing my mind at them. Even to this day I’ll go back and rewatch my favourite MAD’s.
It’s so true about the lost media though :( there’s actually one video that I saw before and it was my favourite, only for it to get removed completely. I’ll provide a veeeeery quick explanation just in case anyone reading this knows where to find it now!
It was a danjo (男女) animation with the characters from the video game series “dangan ronpa”! The video actually was a massive compilation of loads of different early nnd memes and references and the art in it was really fun. I remember it actually following the very basic storyline of the second game!

Canadian here. We call them hoodies and zip ups accordingly. A parka is a heavy winter jacket that has fur on the hood and is typically long enough to cover your butt. Sweaters are just plain crewnecks with no hood like ugly Christmas sweaters, wool sweaters, and athletic sweaters. I thought jumpers were old aerobics one pieces but I just learned they are sleeveless dresses that are worn over a blouse or something along those lines.
