Most dramatic WS ever, most exciting WS game ever. Keep in mind this was coming off the Mariners 116 win season, then folding against New York, who was riding on emotion after 9/11 and nearly swept by the A's. The Diamondbacks had only been in the league for a couple seasons, and everyone expected them to lose. Kim almost choked the series away, but Schilling and especially Johnson pitched incredible ball, handcuffing the Yankees when under tremendous pressure to win. Then it all culminated with this rally, against Rivera, the best reliever in history.
True on every point. I hated the Yankees success when I was in high school so this was great. I dont think this will ever happen again... an expansion team that caught fire and had some certified heat in their bullpen and clutch hitting to take down a Giant like the Yankees at that time. That was that stretch when they were winning it all like, almost every other fucking year or whatever it was. If you weren't a Yankee fan, you def hated it like I did.
JkCa 1 Those we’re both solid hits given that they were off Rivera who gets a lot of weak contact. And let’s not forget the fact that he made a throwing error at second base that put the winning run on base and then hit Craig counsel with a pitch.

The best world series in probably 3 generations. The mighty Yankees were going for their 5th title in 6 years which would have cemented them as the greatest team by far in the contemporary era, only to be thwarted by these upstarts from Arizona in the most dramatic of fashions.
I was lucky enough after waiting in line for 13 hours to get tickets to this game. We were 3 rows from the very top and loved it as when the stealth bomber flew over we almost thought we could touch it. There was a brief moment of silence right after he hit the ball where we all breathed in before realizing it would drop. A little trivia involving one of the Yankees players: Had the Yankees won, Enrique Wilson would have booked a flight on AA Flight 587 to the Dominican Republic, the plane that crashed into a NY Neighborhood and killed all onboard. However there was no NY Victory Parade, so he went home to Dominica a few days before that flight met its fare.

Watching it over again almost brings a tear to my eye.
I know Mariano Rivera is probably the greatest closer of all time. But when you really think about it, he had some monumental blown saves. This one to allow the Diamondbacks to win the World Series in walkoff fashion in game 7, and just a couple years later in game 4 of 2004 ALCS to give the Red Sox all the momentum they needed to pull off the greatest comeback in baseball history.
That's what happens when you're in the playoffs every single year. No one is literally perfect with a 0.00 ERA, the law of averages will catch up to you eventually. And Game 4 in Boston really shouldn't have been a big deal, his teammates still had 3 more games to make up for that and no one would remember it.

Rivera’s throwing error proved costly. Lost the double play which would’ve cleared the bases. Brosius had a play at first base after the recorded out at third base but didn’t throw for some reason. Diamondbacks showed heart.
Mark grace, cub legend. He was bawling after this win. One of the greatest hitters of all time imo. So happy to see him finally get a ring at 37 yrs old after so many years on the cubbies
Back in 2001, I had to record this game because I was teaching a class across town that evening. Managed to get home without hearing anything about the outcome, and watched the first eight and a half-innings (fast-forwarding through commercials) . . . but I lost focus for a couple of seconds and inadvertently fast-forwarded through the bottom of the ninth . . . and suddenly realized the "wrong" team was celebrating on the field (as I, like everyone else, figured Rivera would be lights-out). It was a weird feeling, watching that rally while knowing the D-backs had won, but with no idea how. I wish I had watched it the right way, but it was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Classic Series, classic ending.
Mariono Rivera is the greatest closer of all time, everyone knows this. He also completely shit the bed here: missed 2nd base throw, HBP, 2 hits. It's unbelievable to watch along with 2004 vs the Red Sox.
I truly thought the baseball gods were on the Yankees' side given the crazy comebacks earlier in the series. It was such an entertaining and emotional series, and the Diamondbacks seized their destiny in the face of it all.
My MIL lives in Phoenix area, was a season ticket type fan during this season. My daughter's team was playing for a state basketball tournament berth in the Midwest during that series and Grandma flew back and forth for all of the games, baseball and basketball. It was a very exciting and emotional time as it all happened shortly after the 9/11 disaster. #Neverforget
I LOVED this David Vs. Goliath of a series. 9 time out of 10, Rivera shuts the door and the Yankees win. But October is when anything can happen and the right team getting hot at the right moment can change everything. Look at the Phillies last year. They stomped the Cardinals in the Wild Card series and then muscled their way all the way to the World Series. Yes, they lost to the Astros, but the fact that on a mere 87 wins they fought to the finish. THAT is what baseball is all about!
Amazing how this world series was. I was born in cali but i moved here when i was 4. My whole family are huge LA sports fans and we have been waiting for one of our teams to finish the job this year (mainly the dodgers). We will have to find out but this story of the diamondbacks winning it all was amazing. I always thought arizona never won a championship; then i found out about 2001. I was only a few months old when this was going on let alone the 9/11 tragedy. So when i learned that arizona won, i was really happy; i mean im not a fan but it was nice to find out that arizona has a championship. Congrats guys, maybe you guys will do it again some time. Y’all are in 3rd place currently, so im pretty sure you guys will make postseason. Good luck y’all
I like how they took the score bug off the screen for the last at bat. Viewer got to focus solely on the moment. These days with over production, drones, flying cameras, strike boxes, the viewing experience is so busy. This was a breath of fresh air
Oldest team I remember staying up late on a school night to watch this epic game and it showed you can't buy championship that an underdog with heart and determination can accomplish anything in the world of sport and in life
One of the reasons I think this is the GOAT world series is that both teams were historically stacked. With all respect to Morris & Smoltz in 91, 2001 Game 7 involved Schilling, Clemens, Johnson, and Rivera, among 20 total All Stars to play that night. That's just ridiculous.
Mark Grace and Tony Womack weren't known for their bats!!! But their gloves !! The fact that they both had clutch hits against the great Rivera was a miracle!
Unbelievable side story about this game. The Yankees had a Dominican player on their team named Enrique Wilson. Mr. Wilson had a flight scheduled on the basis that the Yankees would win the World Series, thus requiring him to attend the parade. That flight was American Airlines Flight 587. He rescheduled his pre-planned flight because he knew there would be no parade. American Airlines Flight 587 crashed upon takeoff and everyone on board perished. Enrique Wilson and his wife were not on the flight because of this game. Mariano Rivera accidentally saved his teammate's family with this loss.
Grace starting the inning off like the champion he always was… broke my heart to see him out of a Cubs uniform, but he deserved a ring. So happy he got it at the end of an amazing career.
imagine being on the diamondbacks and celebrating. like u just beat the yankees and basically won for terrorists and osama bin laden. it doesnt get much worse than that. they shoulda let the yankees win. and their kinda psychopaths for celebrsting like this. idc if its a game 7 walk off. have sum decorum. have sum respect. if i was the commissioner every dbacks player and coach wouldnt have been fired. they woulda been assassinated.
One funny aspect of this rally is how Jay Bell ended up being the guy to score the winning run. Bell owns the post-Depression record for sacrifice bunts in a season. The DBacks were in a unique situation where they needed to pinch hit for Randy Johnson and have that player lay down a bunt. And wouldn't you know it, they had perhaps the best option in the modern era on their bench to perform that niche task with everything on the line. But despite being supremely qualified to do that job, Bell laid down a horrible bunt and was lucky to not have been doubled up. Instead of doing his job and being thrown out, he was now the potential winning run. Never in sports history has a player been so uniquely qualified to do an uncommon task, failed so miserably at that task, yet been so handsomely rewarded for that failure in the end. But good for Bell; all those selfless sac bunts in the early 90s paid off for him in the end, albeit in a very bizarre way.
Bruv Mate Yah me too! Unreal how fast time goes. I remeber watching this entire series. It was incredible. Remember Dbacks closer Kim? He blew 2 games, back to back, bottom of the ninth, and one of them in the 10th with Jeter’s HR Becoming Mr. November
I am the biggest diehard Dbacks fan there is. I am from NYC and was in the school that got messed up by the 9/11 attacks. I would wear my jersey everyday and people would hate me in school lol. my dad was a yankee fanatic fan and those 7 games were wars in my house lol. When we won this I felt like I can fly. I couldn't wait to see every yankee fan I knew. They ducked me for a while lol. All respect to the Yankees though, as I got older i got to appreciate how great they were. Says alot about my DBACKS!
Yeah but then a weak groundball to SS or 2B wins it. With Rivera going against a leftie, I would expect a week groundball over a bloop to double play depth
with a force at home you can't play for a weak ground ball, especially with the power hitter Gonzalez batting. You never see infield in with bases loaded, let alone in a situation where it's a power hitter up to bat. poor managing there.
I remember that night in Nov., 2001- Gonzo delivers the dagger with the walk-off bloop single and the Diamondbacks win the World Series. Yes, Gonzo was third in the 2001 Home Run Chase, behind Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa and in the end, he delivers his team a championship in a full 7 games!!!
Still can't believe Mariano Rivera was the first player to be unanimously voted into the HoF. You'd think literally blowing a WS Championship would disqualify someone from being able to achieve that. There's no doubt he had an incredible career, but I can't wrap my head around this one (not to mention he blew Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, which eventually led to the Yankees blowing a 3-0 series lead)
Mo Rivera only had a few meltdowns in the playoffs, but every single one led to the yankees being elimated (1997, 2001, 2004). It could be said he cost the yanks 3 titles all by himself, but it can also be said they never would have won those 5 titles without him.
Despite all the years that have gone by, this still hurts just as bad as it did when it just happened. Not sure why I torture myself by going back to this. Lol
As a dback fan yes we exist and there would be more of us if our management didn’t suck ass.
Good luck y’all
Ty
I like how they took the score bug off the screen for the last at bat. Viewer got to focus solely on the moment. These days with over production, drones, flying cameras, strike boxes, the viewing experience is so busy. This was a breath of fresh air
Greatest World Series ever bar none!
BAR NONE!!!
Minnesota vs. Atlanta in 1991 was better.
@@barfrockskin535 Hard for me to pick between those two. That game 7 in 91 had to be the most exciting 1-0 game in the history of sports.
Best World Series ever.
Sports doesn't get any better.
Oldest team I remember staying up late on a school night to watch this epic game and it showed you can't buy championship that an underdog with heart and determination can accomplish anything in the world of sport and in life
yah let's not act like the d backs weren't stacked either though lol. Johnson Schilling probably the best 1-2 ever.
One of the greatest walk-off wins in World Series history.
whats "great" about? the fact that this walk off supports terrorism or the fact that it made new yorks 9/11 victim families suffer more?
Mark Grace and Tony Womack weren't known for their bats!!! But their gloves !! The fact that they both had clutch hits against the great Rivera was a miracle!
Dude_ Mark Grace is a lifetime .300 hitter. He had more hits in the decade of the nineties_ than any other player in baseball.
They were contact hitters bro 😎tuff outs!
Mark Grace was a stud. One tier below HOF.
Grace should be HOF. Especially for his bat
Grace was an amazing hitter in his heyday - this version of him was once his body was already broken down
Still gives me chills all these years later

Who else felt way worse for New York after 9/11 and the World Series 2001 went downhill for New York
imagine being on the diamondbacks and celebrating. like u just beat the yankees and basically won for terrorists and osama bin laden. it doesnt get much worse than that. they shoulda let the yankees win. and their kinda psychopaths for celebrsting like this. idc if its a game 7 walk off. have sum decorum. have sum respect. if i was the commissioner every dbacks player and coach wouldnt have been fired. they woulda been assassinated.
La mejor serie mundial que yo he visto en mi vida .
Good. All you yankee fans im talking to you. Good. I stayed up at 10 to watch this. And I’ll watch every week until the day I die. Mets fan
You and your ancestors 😈
F you all
I watched 2015 and love it along with Texas beating the Diamondbacks in 2023
Blue Jays fan here. The 9th inning was basically a Hollywood film.
Hard to top this moment.
La mejor serie que me ha tocado ver
The best closer to ever walk the earth. For the love of god, take the out at 1st on the bunt and the Yankees have a 4 peat
This is the one that hurt the most. Respect to The DBacks.
respect to the dbacks for making 9/11 victim families suffer more? hell no
Floater center field the diamondbacks are world champions
And all this against the greatest closer of all time.
This was almost 19 years ago, but I remember this like yesterday
Bruv Mate Yah me too! Unreal how fast time goes. I remeber watching this entire series. It was incredible. Remember Dbacks closer Kim? He blew 2 games, back to back, bottom of the ninth, and one of them in the 10th with Jeter’s HR Becoming Mr. November
I loved every minute of that 9th inning rally. But, seriously though, for the Yankees to be in the World Series 5/6 in a 6 year stretch is amazing!
Can’t forget they made it to the 2003 WS as well.
I remeber watching this live at a friends house..i was 11
I am the biggest diehard Dbacks fan there is.
Pre HD .. Pre 16x9 … TV is incredible since then.
La mejor serie mundial que he visto, lastima que Rivera perdió ese juego, el fue quien lo botó
Remember watching this as a child. Most intense World Series I’ve seen. Best postseason series was probably the 04 Red Sox vs yanks tho.
Takes me to my happy place.
I remember this like it was only yesterday I was in 6 th grade
Due to 9/11. I'll admit, this was the only time I ever cheered for the Yankees to win the WS.
diamondbacks shoulda been disbanded for doing that
With one out and the bases loaded, the Yankees should have been at double play depth. That they weren't cost them on Gonzalez's series winning hit.
Yeah but then a weak groundball to SS or 2B wins it. With Rivera going against a leftie, I would expect a week groundball over a bloop to double play depth
Zach Ford not if you double up Gonzo, who at that point in his career was not that fast.
with a force at home you can't play for a weak ground ball, especially with the power hitter Gonzalez batting.
Christ. New York needed this one.
I'm an Angels fan, but this still gives me chills!
And the Angels would win their first and only World Series title to date the next year
Best world series of all time!
I’m a Cardinals fan here after the D-Backs clinched a trip to the 2023 WS.
I remember going to my room and praying and coming back watching Gonzo hitting that ball to win the world series. Simply WOW Awesome.
broke my heart as a kid
I remember watching every game and felt so happy when this happened. Amazing series!
ur weird
Not this time.
I remember banging pots and pans outside after this game. All time yankee hater. An amazing series. Prob never be topped.
We are just such a young franchise with a growing transplant city and shit ownership so it’s difficult but for me it’s awesome. Even though it stinks trust me watching the suns in the finals stung too. I’m sorry it sucks it is a classic though that’s why. One of the best ws of all time
@@maciedixon3983 I don't think he's speaking as dbacks fan dude lol
