.22 Magnum Fire Breathers! Walther WMP vs Kel-Tec PMR-30

  • When it comes to semi-auto pistols chambered in 22 magnum, there are only two commonly found. In this review, we compare the new Walther WMP and the older Kel-Tec PMR-30. Each are chambered in 22 WMR (22 mag), and both have options for mounting red dot sights: Walther is ready out of the box, the Keltec you need to buy a part. For roughly the same expenditure, which would YOU choose?

    one advantage of the Kel Tec you didn't mention, is that you can get a carbine that uses the same magazine. In your video you were also shooting noticeably fast with the Kel Tec. Probably because of better sights making for quicker target acquisition.

    • @qbanlink25
      @qbanlink25 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree with you on the shooting faster with the KeTecs sights, I own one and can vouch that may be the case but that's only true so long as the all polymer crap magazine doesn't jam a round as it's feeding and frankly it's a dovetail swap that's easily done if need be, plenty of aftermarket sights out there. The PMR's true achilles heel are the bs all polymer magazines with no steel reinforcements or a mechanism to properly guide the rounds through consistently, trust me I've owned one for years and have upgraded it with MCarbo everything and still those mags are the weak link. In part I agree with your argument but another part finds it irrelevant, shooting fast is nowhere near as important as reliability, not for range practicing nor least of all for self defense at those average close distances, also it's .30cents + per round. I tend to believe new or seasoned shooters focus more on the fundamentals (stance, proper grip, sight picture, squeezing the trigger & follow through, loading/unloading & immediate actions) rather than dumping lead downrange, yes it's fun and it has it's uses but only for so long. Most everyone can handle the lack of recoil in this chambering so shooting fast is doable again so long as everything else works. Lastly I wouldn't trust those trash mags even from a carbine platform, crap is crap now matter how it's dressed.

    I've had a PMR for about 3 years now. About a year after I bought it, I had a nasty run in with a bad batch of ammo, and cratered both my PMR and a CMR on the same trip to the range. Kel-Tec fixed them both within about 4 weeks and returned them. I've run hundreds of rounds through both since then with ZERO malfunctions.
    I am so confident in my PMR that it is in my EDC mix to carry. It is BIG, but it is also very light weight and having 90+1 available in 3 mags with a round with similar stopping power to a .380 is good to me.
    Walther was interesting to me right up until it weighed in at double with half the round count.
    PMR and CMR got a bad rap due to their mag loading - but the mag loaders out there now make it so it's not much of an issue (again, see above, several hundred rounds fired with ZERO malfunctions - that means no magazine rim lock issues...)

    • @qbanlink25
      @qbanlink25 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not going to go as far as calling you a liar sir but I will say I'm hesitant to believe anyone who claims ZERO malfunction issues on a PMR30, i own one, have for years, upgraded with MCarbo everything, i have their orange speedloader and the black one from KelTec themselves shoot even a nicer one from Maglula with loading/unloading ability, my mags still jam and cause 99% of the issues with this weapons system for me. Maybe you just got a really good one that's the exception not the rule who knows but my experience has been anything but.

    • @CaptainSeamus
      @CaptainSeamus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@qbanlink25 No offense taken, these things are definitely a YMMV... I'll take my luck (and probably just jinxed it, but whatever). The McCarbo loader and the KelTec loader both are not so great. The Maglula is better, but still not perfect. My preference is the American Speedloader "stapler" type loader. The biggest thing with any rimmed ammo, and with these in particular is attention to detail! You MUST pay attention when loading it, and if it doesn't seem quite right, pull a couple of rounds out of the mag and reset. I figured my huge failure early on has now blessed me with an over 500 rounds in each the PMR and CMR since getting them back with no issues at all. Nevertheless, I'll take it.
      Just like I had a Glock that was a complete joke of a firearm - I couldn't get rid of it fast enough - it never did break in nice, and I continually had issues with it... sometimes it's just the firearm. I know the PMRs (especially earlier ones) had a lot of issues, and KelTec has slowly refined them.
      Cheers!

    WAS recently at the range with my new PMR 30. The only thing that was done prior to shooting was thoroughly cleaning the gun and lubing it. I shot 600 rounds using 4 magazines & various ammo types of different manufacturers. I loaded four magazines with the ludex speedloader and did not condition the ammo during the loading process as per kel-tecs recommendation. The only pause in shooting came from either loading another mag or stopping to reload all the mags which took a bit of time. I had a total of five failures: 4 failed to eject and a single failed to feed for a whopping 0.0083 percent failure rate. YES I'M VERY SATISFIED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS 22 MAG SEMI AUTO.

    • @qbanlink25
      @qbanlink25 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For what it's worth I'm thinking those failure to ejects may be related to low slide spring tension, I've seen other videos where folks also point out the slide feels soft to rack, aside from this it seems like a very well built .22mag semi auto.

    For the PMR30 use CCI 22 WMR Maxi-Mag Target 40 grain or CCI 22 WMR Gamepoint 40 grain. Keep the gun clean and well lubricated. Load the magazine carefully. I usually only put in 20 or 25 rounds. You an even use 30 grain in the WMP. With an optic. Mine also has the tlr-3 and is my “out jeeping” weapon and hiking and of course one of many home defense that I can get too. I use the new Federal Punch self defense rounds. They pretty tough. My pmr 30 exploded and the plastic slide cover put 4 stitches in my eye lid (painful as hell) I ordered a new one slide cover from keltec and put it on. Went to the range and went to cycle a round and the barrel was mushroomed and would accept a round. Called Keltech and because they had a record of buying a part from them, it voided my warranty. So ended up buying an aftermarket threaded barrel. Put my Aiken ER in that’s rated from 17 to 556 and it wouldn’t cycle at all. Read up on it and it was causing gas cycling issues. Why make a threaded barrel if you can’t run a silencer?? It would barely cycle without the silencer with 40 grain cci. 45grain critical defense would have a cycle issue about every 10 rounds or three times a mag. I eventually sold and the dude told me he sent it back to keltec and they rebuilt it for him. Keltec does have a good warranty. But don’t do anything your self! And if you add an optic to the Keltec, you actually add a picatinny rail to the slide cover and then the optic. It looks like it sits 5” up higher on the gun. And with an optic. It never cycles three times in a row.
      The WMP has a shake awake cross field optic and I have never had a failure. With any round I put in it. I watched a video on here where a dude bought every 22mag brand of rounds and fired 15k rounds through it and had one fail to cycle in his very last shot. And it was a Winchester super X with the poly tip made specifically for single shot rifles. So that sold me on the WMP.

    On the Kel-Tec PMR disassembly you made it sound ridiculously complicated which isn’t true! Make sure the internal hammer is cocked, remove a single pin, push slide off effortlessly & that’s it. No worrying about any weird parts like you mentioned or anything flying off. One of the easiest disassemblies across the board, very straightforward after the slide is off as well & minimal concerns when deep cleaning! Slide slips right back on & never suffers from multiple attempts like you demonstrated with the Walther(I love Walthers by the way)🙄🤣

But I had more issues with it than all my other firearms combined in more than 50 years of shooting. Failure to feed, broken firing pins, front sights flying off, replacement mags, and two very, very dangerous misfires. Had to send back to the factory after each misfire and sold the gun after the second factory "fix". Again, so much fun to shoot, but what a piece of crap.

    I am a big fan of .22 Mag Autos and I have all 3 of the AMT Auto-Mag II's in 2, 4 and 6 inch barrel lengths. I also own an early PMR30 with a 3 digit serial number. While I initially had an issue with my PMR30 and Winchester DynaPoint ammo, probably caused by a bad batch, I have since put over 2000 rounds from various manufacturers through it without a single problem. It could be I got lucky with My PMR30 or it could be because I prefer to load my magazines short at 25 rounds since that evenly splits a box of 50 between 2 magazines. My rule of thumb has always been to load mags short with a single stack 1 round short and double stacks 2 rounds short. I even do this with AR and AK mags. I also own the CMR30 and have fired about 1000 rounds through it without a problem.

Walther I loaded with 30,33,40,45,50 in same mag tryin to get it to hiccup.. cci fioochi rem hornady speer federal ... 1200 RDS now not a 1 issue in 5 weeks I've owned it ... keltec in 3 years 2100rds and a PLETHORA of issues ... I have 4 other keltecs I love .. but they bombed on the pmr 30 n the one cmr 30 horribly by not making it right for their customers n rectifying all the warranty work needs.. look up fb groups .. we have pages of issues ppl still tr uh in to figure it out from glue to filing .. to polishing .. to custom mags.. the issues still exist .

    27.8oz for the wmp? That's almost as much as a loaded Glock 17. The whole reason you'd go with a .22wmr semiauto handgun is for the extremely high capacity and the extremely low weight. The WMP doesn't give you either. Walther missed the point of why you would develop a gun like this in the first place.

    • @qbanlink25
      @qbanlink25 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely Disagree; I'll take the well built aluminum heavy one that consistently shoots the 16 rounds without a jam over the plastic one that holds 30 that people only load to 25 cuz otherwise it realllllly jams. These full size guns are mainly for target practice and showing new shooters the principles of firearm handling with little recoil, not exactly your concealed carry first choice here but even then to a reasonable extent reliability trumps capacity anyday and something tells me in the heat of the moment you won't exactly notice the extra 12oz in your hand but you sure as hell would notice squeezing that trigger and "not" hearing a bang, then you're sol. Sure ammo wise more is more and yes more is better but it's of no use if it won't cycle properly and I've yet to seen or hear of a case from a survivor of 16 wmr shots, truth be told in the untrained hand most of those shots would be misses but that too is irrelevant, with as loud as this thing is as soon as bullets start flying perps aren't sticking around to ask what caliber that is you're shooting at them. I too wish Walther would successfully design a double stack .22mag that actually cycled unlike KelTecs trash all polymer non steel reinforced ones but they went with the single stack exactly for the reliability aspect imo..

If KelTec were to redesign those successfully and improve on the inner workings of the PMR like it's polymer trash feed ramp and perhaps a bit of a better less blocky crap grip for a more ergonomic one it would go a long way in improving reliability without consumers having to spend hundreds in aftermarket parts and claim the bulk of the market for .22wmr semi auto handguns.

    So it's more like a 26to28+1 with Kel-Tec and some more possibilities of it not working when needed most, however if you take regular care of it, clean it, train with it and swap out the rounds of your emergency loaded mags once a week, or go shoot some off for practice, well then you have a true polymer beast and 26to28 SuperSonic rounds that can fly 1.5 to 2.5 times above the speed of your average self defense Handgun round like 9mm, .40S&W, .45acp ETC. So instead of 850-950FPS of a heavier load, your slinging a smaller but still very loud and lethal round close to rifle speed... 28 rounds of 1300-1600FPS from a pistol without reloading would be awesome! Just dbl tap every time you pull the trigger in a self defense situation and they would be done. It's the poor man's 5.7. But you'd have to be careful cuz like Buckshot, those 22WMR rounds especially slugs will go through a few walls for sure.
    Then there's the Walther which is good to go right out the package but at half the capacity, and a nice HK VP9 style grip, and I imagine it's much tougher.
    Hard choice.
    Maybe just go for the S&W M&P .22WMR, it'll be made well like a Walther but will prob have the same ACTUAL 30+1 capacity like the PMR30 minus the the random issues..... but they all have issues, they are like ppl, we can't run at full capacity at full speed without some problems along the way, also like a car or horse they have to be gently broken in...
    But I love how 22WMR can be anywhere from 1300FPS to a 1600FPS round in a pistol, but a 2400FPS round in a rifle.
    #Lethal
    I almost forgot the Springfield Echelon 22WMR,
    22WMR is a nice rifle round for game up to 250lbs and can go in a nice pistol too for carry. I think a having a .22LR and 22WMR pistol and rifle combo would be awesome if SHTF, although there is no doubt my HK USP .45acp would be my main side squeeze and my Savage .270Win would be for large game or hostil threats that are 200-750 yards out. SKS for the 75-200yard intruders, and the HK USP 45acp and one of the hi capacity 22WMR pistols for 100 yards or less.

  • @qbanlink25
    @qbanlink25 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've owned both a PMR30 and Walther PPQ Q5 Match for years now and without ever even holding the WMP once I could safely say that from a reliability stand point the WMP is the clear winner. My PMR30 is a 1st Gen and with that said I purposely went out of my way to improve upon it with aftermarket kits by MCarbo, I've upgraded everything you can in that weapon system but it's achilles heel is still the poorly designed cheap polymer magazines, whether hand loading it or with a speed loader the rounds tend to get stuck and cause misfeeds, I don't ever top them off complete either to not make things worse but even when running 25 as opposed to 30 they still give me the bulk of the issues with this gun. Again I've upgraded everything else to include fancy aluminum feedramp (the latest model dual feedramp design), trigger, springs, slide stop, magazine release buttons and heavy duty buffer so it's much better equipped than even the out of the box newer generations PMR30's. If KelTec redesigned those dual stack mags to include steel reinforcements and a feature similar to the design of these Walther mags that actually worked they would be the winner hands down, the allure of the KelTec is how light it is and how many rounds it carries but none of that is useful if it wont shoot the damn things, after spending over $300 in add on's over the years I can still see a youtube video of a new design and call it for what it is (an improvement). Lastly I purposely did not mount an optic onto my PMR30 so as to not add any additional weight to the slide and hamper reliability further.
    The WMP is marginally larger in dimension, most definitely heavier and only has the half the capacity of it's competitor but at a glance it's much better made internally with aluminum parts, a fairly heavy barrel for balancing and reinforcements throughout as opposed to heavy polymer use, Walther claims it's dry fire safe and it may just be but to be fair I can't verify that. If you own a PMR you know dry firing it a few times damages the internal polymer where part of the hammer strikes cuz it's heavily predicated around a polymer frame design, I can vouch for Walther's ergonomics even if it's not an exact copy of my Q5, anything close to that would be a massive improvement over the KelTec generic feeling oversized grip but more importantly and imo above all else is the WMP's magazine design. Single stack for improved reliability and if you look closely it is steel reinforced not just all plastic and it has "two" points of contact above that hold onto and guide the rounds at the proper angle to avoid feeding issues, that's why this thing is so reliable out of the box without having to spend another dime on it only to still have it fail like it's competitor's cheap cost savings approach. Again if KelTec could do a quality redesign of their dual stack mags with steel reinforcements and a round guide system that actually worked even if it were an aftermarket purchase only option they would own the .22mag semiauto handgun market but in it's current configuration it's mediocre at best. I'll keep my PMR still I've invested too much into it to ever get anywhere near half my $ back and it's what I use to teach my wife to shoot but I'm definitely picking up one of these WMP's solely for it's reliability aspects cuz any other perceived downsides (weight, size, ammo count) I can live with.

      What model did you have?
      Kel-tec is kinda in a class of their own amongst firearms manufacturers.
      They certainly do not have a 1st class name in reliability like major gun companies such as Walther, Ruger, S&W, H&K, Sig Sauer, etc but they do make some guns that run reliably.
      It's kinda hit & miss.
      Kel-tec is innovative and relatively inexpensive.
      They make some interesting offerings. Some things that they make are merely range toys.
      Some things they make are fairly reliable and inexpensive CCWs. I have owned a P11, PF9, P32 & P2000 folding 9mm and all of them were reliable.
      I wouldn't put 1,000's of rounds through their affordable CCW guns and would recommend that anyone that has one, should only take it to the range for getting familiar with it and not for just fun target shooting.
      I feel that they do have a place in the firearms market but can't be expected to hold up like the names I mentioned earlier.

    Th in German is pronounced as "T". W is pronounced as "V" therefore Walther is pronounced "Valter". I speak fluent German.

    But the PMR is so ugly! I have a P17 Which is a lovely shooter and looks decent. My sub 2000 is ugly but it’s ugly for a reason. There’s nothing like it on the market. I had a PPS that felt like nothing else in my hand and I’m sure that Walter is just the same

    Why does everyone call it the European heal release? The first gun with a thumb release was European the c93 and the luger. Both used a thumb release before any commercial American pistol.

    I bought a WMP the d6 after it was released. The Kel tech I bought new three years ago. It went back to the factory 4 times in a month and a half becuase it wouldn’t feed reliably. Kel tec ended up refunding me directly. Cheap junk vs the the Walther. The kel tec is goofy and flimsy 2 piece design. Look at all the screws that hold the 2 piece lower together.lol. I bet they sell zero now that Walther has made the first reliable 22wmr on the planet. My Walther will cycle all the non suggested ammo it has listed with a 100 % reliability rate.

      And here i keep reading other commenters saying things along the lines of "my PMR has shot x hundreds of rounds with ZERO issues/malfunctions" when i know they're full of shit, i own one for years and i know the troubles it has even after heavily upgrading it's parts and inner workings. For sure getting the WMP next.

    My PMR is a piece of shit but I love it. It weighs nothing And it fires 30 rounds first time users instinctively stop firing around 20-25 rounds like it's broken or something cuz It's still firing lol! And if you mag dump it people are staring at you like what the hell was what And they sell WMR 2200 ft per sec! Most of the gun fits in the palm of my hand. Looks like I'm holding a stick or flashlight But actually it's a barrel with 30 pissed off hornets in it
