      Haha, that’s exactly what I was thinking - “Yeah piss of you great lumbering piece of shiite (pun intended)” - turns: “Sorry Mr IS, didn’t catch that last bit about you fleeing into the mountains with crap running down your leg - let me solve that problem for you, aha, Mr no legs. Now roll into this here hole your arse is about to make, and cover yourself up with sand, there’s a good chap....”
      Awesome flying skills - I think Dave knows his physics almost as well as the principles of flight. I can imagine his troops in the back thinking “Sick bags? On a Chinook? Pffft, dezzy bog-roll, woohoo WTF”?

    The main reason chinooks are surprisingly maneuverable is because they are meant to carry Humvees and tanks, so when they are only carrying troops they have a *lot* of excess power and can put it to good use when doing maneuvers

    A "huh so its slow and hard to maneuver?"
    The Chinook:

    • @SadisNic
      @SadisNic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +258

      Most cargo helicopters are faster than utility and attack. They're designed to fly with thousands of pounds of cargo, remove that cargo and their power to weight ratio skyrockets and dwarfs most other designs. Also, it seems counterintuitive but the bulky fuselage does actually help with speed because the belly acts as an airfoil almost providing both lift and stability.

    • @ericstyles3724
      @ericstyles3724 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @@SadisNic Correct. Like that weird lookg sub hunter the Soviets had briefly in the 70's, it almost look like it had no wings !
      Also the same principle that kept that damaged F-15 aloft that was missing a wing.
      As well I could see the fuselage possibly absorbing some vibration & twist betw. the 2 rotor motors & focusing aerodynamic stability when at speed.
      A rugged design that has endured well.

We were mere feet above the Army Corp of Engineers dirt road and this pilot took a 90° turn down an intersecting road at pretty much OMG speed. generally speaking the helicopter's cross section is in shadow of the thrust, which means the size of the helicopter is only impacting the rotor blade efficiency and has only small amount of aerodynamic drag due to being in the turbulent flow (obviously tilt rotor are different). so the only things that limit the speed of the helicopter is the amount of thrust it has and the speed of sound (the forward moving blade cannot go supersonic). since chinook has a lot of thrust (2 rotors and all that) it is one of the fastest helicopters out there.

    When I was in the air cadets, the whole wing somehow "acquired" a few chinooks for a day. So the whole wing took turns sitting in the back of them as they flew about. We all saw moves like in the video from the ground before we got rides. I still remember it well to this day.

    After 12 op tours, 7 of them "front line" I can say with absolute confidence that the RAF Chinook pilots are the best pilots in the world and there is no better sound, when deployed, than the sound of a Chinook coming to get you. Those guys are all awesome.
    I don't know many of them but those that I do know aren't arrogant like fast jet pilots, they are the salt of the earth and real hero's. All of them, including the loadies. You guys ARE AMAZING THANK YOU. A million times Thank You.

    One of these big boys flew directly over my house here in Fort Worth, Texas yesterday. I am 37 seen flying round here all my life, never gets old. Have an unmistakable sound. I even seem them flying in groups of 3-8 at times far off in the distance going out to Alliance Airport. Really crazy to think it is pulling off a maneuver like that as damn huge as these things are. Skilled bloke flying that is for sure.
