That's actually insane, i mean part of the reason why taxpayer money pays for it in the US is it costing $$ vs being free makes the difference between a stranded/injured hiker choosing not to call for help until conditions are severe. Like imagine being stuck on a cliff with like a broken leg, you'll likely just try and wait it out if you know it's going to cost several thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, and ultimately end up calling only when conditions are so bad you get desperate and decide that you'd rather have a huge bill than be dead.

In fact I think Chinooks, along with the Sea Knights (a similar helicopter of the Marine Corps) are the only ones that can do this, bcoz they don't have vertical tail rotor at their back, only horizontal rotor which make it possible. Imagine a helicopter like Black Hawk, that has a vertical tail rotor, it won't be able to do it in such an angle.

Furthermore, 95% of helicopters are not the Chinook. It was designed for ops like this. How do you think the US military ferried cargo and troops to 15k-20k+ foot mountaintops in Afghanistan for ~15 years?
Someone landed a Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel at the top of Mt. Everest all the way back in 2005 - not cutting edge technology in 2024, to be sure.
