As someone who's quite into the retro handheld emulation scene but does not have bottomless pockets, this is exactly the kind of video I love. Thanks Joey!
People really sleep on the second-hand market. If you know what to look for, you can really get some amazing deals. Good video. Thanks for shining a light on shopping pre-owned.
I love buying second hand. We disinfect the device, mod it, and/or give it a new shell and make it our own! Had great luck like that with a Vita and DSi last year.
Good review! I have this sort of attitude with a lot of modern technology. It rarely makes sense for me to buy a device at launch at the full retail price. I always prefer to wait for either a price drop or just buy one preowned. Waiting a bit also allows the company (or the community) to potentially iron out any possible issues with the device.
Now the problem with the used market is that somebody will have had their cheesey, greasy fingers all over the device. And they'll probably have had those fingers up their nose at some point. And some people think washing one's hands after 'going' is entirely optional.
Just got back from Japan (am Canadian as well) and some stores carry Aya Neo devices. Saw mostly the Slide there. Couldn't believe how cheap they felt considering the price. Especially the joysticks.
It’s cool that you’re doing a used market look. I think a lot of handhelds that come out aren’t “worth” the price but using the rog ally (non-extreme) at $399, way more worth it then the original $599. I realize that’s price drop not used but same point
I managed to get the Pocket Air on eBay for $220 with every intention that it would replace my RG 556, but after using it for a few days I'm conflicted. The Pocket Air has better specs and feels better quality, but I personally find the screen on the 556 to be more vibrant, the sound quality is better than the Pocket Air, and of course, it's more comfortable. So I'm in a bit of a conundrum deciding which device to sell and which to keep. I'm thinking about applying The Gamma Squeeze's stick fix to the 556 and that could be the deciding factor.
Bro Im telling you this device is pretty sweet.I play this all the time. Love it, and it may well be one of the most best looking and comfortable devices out there.Awesome video brother🔥.
There's so many handhelds and so little money and time. I dont think I've really seen my perfect handheld yet, so im hoping there's something awesome that makes me want to spend money this year
The tiny buttons squished together were huge deal breakers for me they felt horrible sold it in the end, the terrible d-pad on the g-cloud also a huge deal breaker loved game streaming on that device.
i got a pocket air for a decent price, but the fan profile is bugged for me, no mater what i change, it'll always stay at mute profile, even if i change to balance or max, any idea how to fix it?, i even factory reset the whole console
I don't know where this narrative that Ayaneo doesn't support their devices came from? I currently have an Ayaneo Kun and there was a pretty significant update to Aya Space just a few weeks ago. This device has been out for over 6 months.
Yeah AYA's support is pretty good, and their devices are good quality. Not sure why they get so much hate other than the price. People talk up the ROG Ally a lot, but the thing burns your SD cards...an insanely terrible defect none of my two AYA devices have, yet everyone craps on the AYA devices lol.
"They (Anbernic) offer black for all of the boring people" I feel attacked. LoL. I remember being very enthusiastic about the Pocket Air when it debuted. One of the knocks on it was that it didn't do Switch very well. I couldn't have cared less about the Switch back then and I still don't. According to Zu's review from Retro Handhelds, this thing is really good with PS2, which I do care about. I didn't buy one though... It was too expensive for what it offered. I checked eBay and FB Marketplace just now, and the pickings are slimmer than the guy that played Major Kong in "Dr. Strangelove". The only one within 300 miles of me is priced higher than a new one. Oh well. I enjoyed the video. If you want to make this sort of thing a regular segment, I'm all for some Depreciation Appreciation.
Yeah I'd love to hear more about older devices. Hear what your playing, whatever. It's not all about what's new. I'm not really getting any new handhelds for a while. I have something for every use case scenario I can think of, and that's even after I gave away like 4 handhelds. I don't need anything new.
I payed full price for this. And it is a really good piece of hardware. The biggest problem is that Aya is really bad at giving proper software support. I had crashes, random reboots and also did several factory resets. I decided not to sell it yet, because i still have hope that Ayaneo will fix their android implementation or community will come up with proper android cfw (like gammaos for anbernic devices).
Hey thanks for this review. I am constantly changing my mind and waiting, but I don't want to anymore. Do you think I should opt for the 8GB Model at $250 or the 12GB at $300? (im not sure how much RAM will matter, i want to play a few switch games, ive seen an updated video of it playing a few of them relatively okay, also the RAM might help elsewhere?) what do you think? or shall i go for a different device entirely? I am obsessed with OLED, so theres that
I have one but now tempted to get a pocket s now even though I definitely don’t need one lol. I got the pocket to remote play with an OLED screen and play more of my retro catalog. For some reason my unit has a stutter on remote play so it’s was not viable for that. So I use it for retro emulation since I don’t want a super large screen to play GBA. So the pocket air has been just fine. My pocket air doesn’t take drivers so I couldn’t use turnip with yuzu. And some texture packs don’t work too. The software is subpar as well and I’ve noticed some micro cracks on the shell and I’ve taken great care of mine. So I’m thinking of selling my mine as is and replacing it with something else for retro emulation and Xbox remote play. But we’ll see, so still like the device overall
I'm new to this. I just ordered the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. I'm getting ready for it's arrival, as you said in a previous posting. Do I really need a model specific emulator for every platform? I realize that I can't use a Nintendo emulator for a Playstation. What I'm referring to is do I need a emulator for EVERY, let's say, GameBoy version? Or can I do just a emulator for Gamboy up to Gameboy Advanced SP, and another emulator for the DS lineup?
For Game Boy specifically you'll need two emulators. The Game Boy Color was fully backwards compatible and shared a lot of the hardware of the original Game Boy, so a lot of emulator developers target the Color knowing that the original Game Boy works too. You'll need a separate emulator for Game Boy Advance. I use Robert Broglia's freestanding GBC EMU and GBA EMU. Other people use the two My Boy emulators and still others use the two Pizza Boy emulators. Many people, including this channel's proprietor - Joey, use Retroarch for every GBA and older console.
Ive got mine on ebay for £175 a month ago, its the 6gb 128gb model so not tte best, bits an amazing little machine, GC, PS2, indie switch games , gba, PSP, my 1 TB card is almost full
This device is terrible I owned it for a week, I love the way it looks and feels that's the only thing it had going well for it. The OS and performance DID NOT do well at all. I know how to setup these devices but the performance modes did not hold up against the Retroid 4 Pro even. My Odin 1 Pro even outperformed this nonsense. Now price if you got this for under $200 and want play games at 1x resolution that's what to expect but why have an OLED on a device that only performs well enough to push 1x resolution emulation?
Sounds like you had the performance bug at launch. Was fixed by a software update apparently, and could be fixed back then by toggling on and off the performance mode.
@@odanrov nope I bought mine in January, I had to manually reflash the stock OS to get the updates to even work. After I fully updated it I still had no good experiences with the performance. The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro performed better not sure why either maybe I just had a bad device. Luckily I was able to return it. If it performed better I actually would've given it more credit.
As someone who's quite into the retro handheld emulation scene but does not have bottomless pockets, this is exactly the kind of video I love. Thanks Joey!

I disagree. On eBay they still sell second hand handhelds for a lot more than I'm willing to pay.
Where can I get one of these on second hand?
I love buying second hand. We disinfect the device, mod it, and/or give it a new shell and make it our own! Had great luck like that with a Vita and DSi last year.
I really like this format of used market handhelds
eBay shows these going for $275-$450 still… sold listings… used

If you can wait, INDIEGOGO pre-order option saves a ton too! If you are willing to be an early adopter, that is!
Now the problem with the used market is that somebody will have had their cheesey, greasy fingers all over the device. And they'll probably have had those fingers up their nose at some point. And some people think washing one's hands after 'going' is entirely optional.
the thing is, you can get all the other competing products in Used condition as well, and then those become a better deal than Pocket Air again.
love the used market pricing comparison
p.s You didn't blur out your IP, I doubt it matters if you have dynamic IP, just wanted to let you know!

Nope!

Just on the texture pack front, you'll have to use PNG as DDS won't work.
Do you find the 6 gig of RAM holds it back in Switch emulation?
Switch emulation on a Mali GPU without custom drivers is pretty bad either way.
