1:16 I will never understand the people that argue against having MicroSD on phones (these people, somehow, do exist). Its convenient for console modding, moving files between my various devices, good cheap storage for photos/videos/ROMs/music, PLUS the insane prices of internal storage. Internal storage prices are so bad that I'm planning to buy a usb c splitter, microSD adapter, usb c M.2 enclosure, a 2230 SSD, and making my own phone case for it all to fit into. It'll cost me about the same as moving up to a 256GB model and I'll instead get 1TB of fast, reliable storage, not to mention the fact that it's EASILY upgradable.
As someone who plays Genshin Impact on Ayaneo pocket S I can confirm Screen mapping works perfectly with GI. Stick mapping has two modes, Hold and Repeat. For left stick mapping used for movement you need to use 'Repeat' mode and for right stick 'Hold' mode. But the bummer is as of right now there is no way to manually adjust deadzone. There is a setting called "Range Adjustment" that toggle deadzone but default deadzone setting is around 22~25% which is huge. The sticks on my unit has small amount of drift that could have been fixed with less than 5% deadzone but if the game or emulator I am using do not have deadzone adjustment I am forced to use "Range Adjustment" with huge deadzone. Also there is no physical-button mapping considering it has seven extra buttons on it. I bought the Pocket S for its slim formfactor with 6" screen so that I can slide it in my pocket if need be, but if pocket-ability is not a big factor I'd recommend buying Ayn Odin 2 or Odin 2 Mini instead. I guess because Ayn had more experience with Android, their customization apps are much more refined. And Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been out for a while so its driver is more matured so some high-end emulation games plays better on Odin 2 than Pocket S.
Since they recently announced the Pocket EVO that loses the pocketability of this model, but seems to pretty much fix every other problem with the device hardware-wise, I'm starting to wonder if AYANEO had to fulfill some kind of design quota for Qualcomm where they had to first release some kind of "premium" device to make Qualcomm look good before they could actually build the handheld they WANTED to build.
Linus ripping on Gary being old only to immediately say he didn't know what the buttons do like a grandpa who doesnt know how to use the new remote is hilarious to me.
Like, I get why people keep comparing this to other windows base handhelds because of the price. But it's an android device, people don't bring up other high-end handhelds like the odin 2, razer edge, and gpd xp enough. Those are the devices that a person who wants a higher end android handheld for android games would be looking at.
120+FPS on a handheld anything is… just a waste. You’d have to be way too close to the display and that wouldn’t be comfortable, and it sucks performance and power in the process. Bad idea. Save that for setups that can take advantage of it. If you want 120fps on that thing, plug a monitor or TV in, silly! Probably won’t get much more than 120 though since it’s a power saving focused ARM handheld, so it’s already handicapped 4 times over.

Also for Hoyoverse ganes with controller support you have to manually select it every time you launch the game, its just a mihoyo thing they never implemented auto detect.
I've had one for about a month now. No major complaints besides the sticks and face buttons being too small for me. Also wish it had a 3.5mm jack. It runs all PS2 and GC games great.
Steam deck is cheaper and does that obscenely well. If all you're playing is PS2 and GC, you could have saved even more money with Anbernic's rg cube or rg 556. Everything listed here has a 3.5mm jack, BT and wifi.
Genuine question: how do they keep making new models? Both Ayaneo and GPD have been featured on LMG videos for atleast 5 years now and they both constantly seem to be bringing out new models constantly, atleast annually, all with new designs meaning new tooling and new R&D which costs money and yet I have only ever met one single person in the wild with one of these companies devices. Who’s buying these? And I don’t mean that cynically, I mean where are they selling enough of these to be able to continuously pump out new models so frequently because here in North America they don’t seem to be prevalent at all. Do they have more traction in Europe or Asia?
430 nits is "pretty darn bright"? Even an iPhone 5 from 13 years ago has a 500 nits screen. Not to mention new phones ship with 2600 nits. What it is with LTT and their low brightness bias?
Whoever set up the control scheme did it wrong for genshin. you can indeed do it but theres an option that needs to be selected for that to pan properly
The issue with the controls lies with the game you tested. Genshin impact doesn't support controller natively on Android but does on iOS. Neither does Honkai Star Rail(another hoyoverse game) but a game like Zenless Zone Zero (yet another hoyoverse game) does support controller on android. And also an Emulator (almost any?) will support controllers natively on android. I think for android game testing moving forward you should verify if the game does actually support controllers and not just assume they do or settle for controller emulation via mapping screen touches to buttons because tbh that seems jank especially in a world where lots of games do infact have controller mapping built into them, even if it does work on iOS.
The on screen controller problems were all user error. The settings can be changed to tweak how the right stick works. The on screen buttons qnd controls can also all be hidden.
To be honest, this device is definitely not for everyone. Ayaneo acknowledges there are issues with the onscreen mapping to physical buttons in some Android games and are working on the issue. (I'm actually impressed by how well they actually listen to the community, and the speed at which they are pushing out updates.) This device is mainly for those who are looking for a dedicated high-end console emulation device. Sure, you can get a mobile x86 gaming device, but not at this slim size. A backbone-like controller would be fine for those who only game occasionally when mobile. The Ayn Odin 2 would be the most comparable device on the market, and it is a better value overall, but I prefer the form factor of the Ayaneo.
The thing with COD M is that controller support is disabled if it doesn't detect a Bluetooth connection for it. So it works with a dualsense and xbox controller, but not a razer kishi and this device it seems.
At the high to top end, sure. Low end to mid stuff from Anbernic, Trimui, Retroid and even the R36s are all selling strong, even with the crazy release rate of consoles. Can't fit the deck in pockets, and I cherish that thing way too much to risk bringing it outside the house. Much more palatable and simpler to bring a sub $100 handheld.
That’s only the base model on indiegogo price, There’s also more expensive model and they will go up few $100 more once that ends and then the main way to buy will be on Amazon
If you don't like it, send it to me. It's fantastic. The Odin 2 is also great, arguably even better. They're two of the best retro handhelds on the market.
4:17 and where are the LABS tests mentioned in the timeline? Not a single performance test, just screen brightness and battery life. Who will check and when will the actual performance tests be published? How is the performance compared to Snapdragon 8 gen. 3?
Hit and miss? My 15 euro switch-style bluetooth controller for my phone connects and works with 90% of emulators with automatic assignment if it's at all needed to go into the input menu and selecting the controller
the pocket s doesn't make sense rn... if you want an arm handheld just get an odin 2 or an rg556 or a retroid pocket 4 pro... all these make more sense both in ergonomic and price (and the odin 2 also performance wise). the thing is, while it is true that the pocket s is more powerful than the odin 2 it is also true that you don't need that extra power since there are no games or emulators that are able to fully use the gigantic power that both of them deliver so at that point the odin is just waaaay better of a deal. we got to a point where software isn't keeping up with the hardware at least on android
also cemu has announced that they are working on an android release so we are finally getting the litteral only console that was missing on android.... at this point i don't think x86 handhelds are for me any more, i mean look how long the battery lasts on arm handhelds compared to x86s....

Linus your forty years are showing in the middle of your jacket a bit early.
AYN Odin 2 is still the best handheld possible even if its not cheap, 8Gen 2 is more than enough
Yeah, it will only struggle on Ray tracing or unoptimized games
@@mrbobgamingmemes9558 I think that even the g3 will struggle with ray tracing
@@fernandoferraz4146 yeah, I surprised Ray tracing comes to mobile soo quickly considering most mobile game dev don't care about Graphics
The on screen controller problems were all user error. The settings can be changed to tweak how the right stick works. The on screen buttons qnd controls can also all be hidden.
Make the damn controller xinput. Seriously guys. I was looking so hard at that thing but.. thanks for going over this.
To be honest, this device is definitely not for everyone. Ayaneo acknowledges there are issues with the onscreen mapping to physical buttons in some Android games and are working on the issue. (I'm actually impressed by how well they actually listen to the community, and the speed at which they are pushing out updates.)
This device is mainly for those who are looking for a dedicated high-end console emulation device. Sure, you can get a mobile x86 gaming device, but not at this slim size. A backbone-like controller would be fine for those who only game occasionally when mobile.
The Ayn Odin 2 would be the most comparable device on the market, and it is a better value overall, but I prefer the form factor of the Ayaneo.
why not just use a mobile phone with razer kishi or something,
and a window emulator or side load window on android ?
The reason why the right stick doesn't work is because it's on stick mode instead of swipe mode
Having a right analog stick not controlling the camera properly isn't something I expected to see in 2004, let alone 2024
So fun fact as sick as the hoodie looks as of right now it's absolutely 100 percent sold out on the site
I love Gary. Need more gary
Always fun watching someone who knows nothing about retro handheld gaming review something designed for it. A much more honest review.
The thing with COD M is that controller support is disabled if it doesn't detect a Bluetooth connection for it. So it works with a dualsense and xbox controller, but not a razer kishi and this device it seems.
The steam deck killed the market of chinese gaming handhelds that were sold for double its price. These are their last breaths
At the high to top end, sure. Low end to mid stuff from Anbernic, Trimui, Retroid and even the R36s are all selling strong, even with the crazy release rate of consoles. Can't fit the deck in pockets, and I cherish that thing way too much to risk bringing it outside the house. Much more palatable and simpler to bring a sub $100 handheld.
given the ownership of AYANEO your Labs team should do a complete firmware dump and Analysis of the device
$509?! Are they out of their fucking mind!
That’s only the base model on indiegogo price,
There’s also more expensive model and they will go up few $100 more once that ends and then the main way to buy will be on Amazon
If you don't like it, send it to me. It's fantastic. The Odin 2 is also great, arguably even better. They're two of the best retro handhelds on the market.
The smart shirt with hoodie combo is the classic IT support tech uniform

How does Linus look even younger with a collar shirt?
No fr he looks like a grad student
Honestly, Android generally doesn't really like gamepad controls.
I had a similar issue when setting up my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro as a handheld PS2.
We missed your face ! Welcome back, Linus !
Genshin Impact unfortunately doesn't support controller natively on Android for some reason, so this isn't an oversight on Ayeneo's part.
I liked the more colorful version of the wan hoodie that was first shown
4:17 and where are the LABS tests mentioned in the timeline? Not a single performance test, just screen brightness and battery life. Who will check and when will the actual performance tests be published? How is the performance compared to Snapdragon 8 gen. 3?
That shirt and TH-cams compression - YIKES!
This shirt looks like something I would expect Pogo the clown would wear.
Hit and miss? My 15 euro switch-style bluetooth controller for my phone connects and works with 90% of emulators with automatic assignment if it's at all needed to go into the input menu and selecting the controller
My man, I was not expecting the chomp out of a line, I puckered so damn hard
I feel like ayaneo is just gonna flood the segment and see which hooked up..
LTT, the problem with genshin is that apple pays for 120fps and controller support exclusivity is not an android issue
LTT: We need to make linus to wear business attire
LTT store: We got you fam
the pocket s doesn't make sense rn... if you want an arm handheld just get an odin 2 or an rg556 or a retroid pocket 4 pro... all these make more sense both in ergonomic and price (and the odin 2 also performance wise). the thing is, while it is true that the pocket s is more powerful than the odin 2 it is also true that you don't need that extra power since there are no games or emulators that are able to fully use the gigantic power that both of them deliver so at that point the odin is just waaaay better of a deal. we got to a point where software isn't keeping up with the hardware at least on android
also cemu has announced that they are working on an android release so we are finally getting the litteral only console that was missing on android.... at this point i don't think x86 handhelds are for me any more, i mean look how long the battery lasts on arm handhelds compared to x86s....
