    I always kick myself when my rods stick thinking I’m doing something wrong or don’t yet have enough experience. Glad you didn’t edit that out, let’s us know it can happen to anybody.

    My grandfather was a dust bowl okie. His family settled in lathrop ca due to the rail hub in that area at that time. The railway provided an income both legally and illegally. Rail workers frequented my grandmother’s store and my 9 year old grandfather rode the trains to get to the areas harvesting fruits.
    That being said, my grandfather always looking for better paying work landed in the pre WWII ship yards of Oakland ca. as it was told to me, he advised, he looked around for the best paying job and in his mind it was the “burners”, the Oxyacetylene torch operators made the best money. So he would learn the torch on breaks. When asked about his skills he lied, and said that he learned them in his dads garage.
    Eventually he got the “burner” job at the shipyard.
    And eventually he was sent to war in the pacific.
    However…. He had a skill. The oxyacetylene torch. And the us gov put him to work in the Philippines.
    Building water tanks or cutting tank barriers, that guy was running a torch for America.
    So… when I see torch video I have a soft spot in my heart

    I didn’t hear if you mentioned what rod you were using but it sure seems like 7018. A tip if you restart a rod, pull it out of the holder and clean the tip. You can tap it straight down a few times or I like to simply drag the tip across the bench a few times to clean it. It takes about as long to try and restart.

    I find it easier to light back up if you pinch off the flux on the end of the rod with your fingers an you won't have to keep tapping it

    Austin nice quick job !! Do you use a battery isolator whem welding on your truck?? I use a product callef anti zap it hooks to the battery and I have wrlded on all kinds of trucks amd I hab had no issues with computers or charging systems getting messed up. JB

    Austin.. when welding something in the vice fitted to the truck do you have anything fitted to the battery to stop the ecu getting damaged? I am a agricultural engineer here in the uk and I have to connect a surge protector to any machine I weld on.

    @Austin Ross , MAN! What is that nifty little “chipping hammer” you pull out of your pocket?? I assume it’s not mild steel right? I’ve got to make/get me one of those! And what’s the story with the two little notches on the one end?

    Is your tailboard vise only held by friction applied by the bolt in the welded nut or is there also a reundant positive retention method like a hitch pin? I try to design to mitigate MY OWN mistakes or inattention. I trust myself, but man is of course imperfect..

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just the bolt. That hitch pin for back up is a great idea though. 👌😎

    • @SegoMan
      @SegoMan ปีที่แล้ว

      If your doing hitch pin only drill a vertical hole (top or bottom) in the receiver tubing and tap it then you can run a bolt in to stop the jiggle..

    Hey fella. What is most rig welders doing to isolate electronics on the truck to weld off the back like you did? I'm hesitant about welding off my rigs bed. Every piece of equipment I realize and units of fire truck I've built or repaired I've always disconnected batteries and often major computer assembly.

    • @bostrickland8240
      @bostrickland8240 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can make sure your bed is isolated with bushings, and plastic sleeves around your bolts if your nervous about it.
      Welding on other people’s equipment vehicles ect. Good practice to disconnect batteries. The only instance where you could have an issue if you were grounded in a bad spot or in a spot where your current path somehow didn’t directly ground out through your work piece. If you grounded the front fender for instance and then tried to weld on the rear bumper brackets your ground could possibly go through electrical components. If you always ground as close to your work as possible you’ll never have any issues.

      @bostrickland8240 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may already know all that if so please don’t be offended.

    Just a little tip to pick up ur speed a bit more is to gas cut everything and then grind everything after. It saves u having to keep turning on and setting the cutting torch and turning it off again.
