- In this video, we will be stick welding 8" pipe. We will be using 1/8 6010 and 5/32 8010. We will be welding downhill. The 6010 and 8010 is Lincoln brand welding rod and is also known as cellulose rod or electrode. As compared to low hydrogen welding rods or electrodes.

Hey Austin, you know there is white noise videos of thunderstorms , raging creeks, frogs and crickets. Well you should make one of burning rod ,grinding,and a welding machine idling in the back ground, simply because as you say it's soothing.👌

Take it from a old crack filler that got his training back in 78 to 80 as a beginner in the welding business, now retired you've come a long way has a proficient welder. I love 1/8" 6010 5P. My SA 200 Blackface runs that stuff like a fry cook making bacon.

Back in the day, all pipe welds were uphill. 6010 or 6011 root, then 7018 until done.
I worked for sugar refinery they want all 5 p up hill all the out they where so backwards .

Would be nice to watch to your weld puddle. Been running downhill for years on everything. Self taught and have passed all tests, but my technique is wrong I am told . I am 67 years of age.
I filmed my cap pass in this video. Id say your technique ain’t wrong! If it works for you it ain’t wrong! In my opinion.
Good job, that weld is slicker than a newborn babies butt. Keep practicing and you will get better with every weld.

I see you are using several different methods of starting your rod arc. One seems to be you are shorting your rod, lowering your hood and then pulling the rod away to initiate arc. Am I correct?
That probably wouldn’t work with a electrically powered welder?
What shade lens are you using that you can see to position your rod with the hood down using normal scratch start?

That 8010 is that what they call hippy rod? Seems like I burned a hell of a lot of that almost 30 years ago on the Olympics project in Snow basin Utah. Could never remember the rod number but it was downhill with a tiny whip and looked and sounded like that. It is therapeutic for sure!

The weld looked good but I would also like to see the weld on the inside, can you film that once. What lenses are you running with the pancake ?
why do you not use the complete rod also are the rods14 in or 18 in long.i have some 18 in rods in my shop
It just depends. Usually I do use the whole rod. 14”

maybe dumb but what kinda motion are you doing running the root
Just drag it. If it starts burning to 1 side you sort of twist it like he did in the video. If your running too hot or the gap gets too big you can step it carefully like he did at one point as well. But I’m perfect circumstances you should be able to just drag it down and it should go in like butter.
Twist it/move side to side to get the rod burning evenly again*
@@noahgavin8646 I just finished my first semester of welding 101 and I’ve done nothing but ran beads on flat plates and when I started with 6010 I was taught the whip technique where you whip out of the weld pool and I didn’t know if it was the same motion but watching this he wasn’t manipulating the rod as much so I was just curious…. I just moved on from overhead 7018 and will be doing Tjoins and open butt this weekend
