Agreed! Not a fan of coilovers on commodores. Personally I'd go Monroe shocks, purely to keep intune with the Aussie made goodness 💪. Be careful with the sideskirt removal, there is a screw behind the HSV badge, so many of these get damaged from being ripped off.
Nothing wrong with a quality set of coilovers. Unfortunately to many cheap out and get the cheapest shit they can find then set them up incorrectly then blame the part for being bad
Pedders used to do coilovers for early commodore but being irs in the rear it will be a an adjustable spring perch and separate shock.. I used pedders springs and shocks in a vs with irs, sports rider springs and shock in the front, these are the reds ones, and comfort springs and shocks in the rear grey one. Found it to handle really well and not to stiff
Agree with the genre statement. I have monroe shocks and king springs. Thinking of raising it back up a bit though. Scrapes on so much and ride is a bit rough.
Good idea to cover rubber trim before polishing the paint. I paid a so called professional to cut and polish my HSV VT CLUBSPORT and he permanently stained the roof gutter trim with polish! Lucky I have another set in excellent condition.
Chris, in regard to the wheels & suspension, I totally agree. Back when I was mucking about with cars, we would do exactly the same thing. But with so much aftermarket gear, that line has been blurred. And a quick trick to cleaning the coolant tank if you had not been able to buy new. You can use a product called Oxyper which is used to clean beer lines. Use warm water and a drop of kitchen detergent with the Oxyper and it will reduce the yellowing. And the paint looks a lot better, Cheers
Great content there, Chris. I am enjoying the HSV content myself. Maybe one day you might take it out for a spin one day, in other words, a drive, but the prices on fuel is absolutely bloody expensive. Look after yourself. Cheers from William.
Good spring shock combo will work a treat on the vr, front struts are easier to change on the vr as compared to the vn, no more strut inserts, you replace the whole strut as a unit, literally 3 bolts and they are out. With heights, email king springs customer support, they are super helpful with everything
Hold the buff machine square/flat to the panel. Other wise your detailing work is top notch. Wash before buff is always best practise could also add decon/clay bar if your feeling extra. But its time consuming and if rhe paint is already relatively "smooth" with minimal water marks and ghost marks from tree sap etc i wouldnt worry about it. But my background is automotive refinishing not detailing. Wet sanding to 5000g wasnt taught in tafe. But matching to oem/pre crash condition is etc.
The Group A SS at Grays (previous video) I ended up buying it. Yes the wreckers scenario is very common where you wait for a small part and feel like you just got to hand over your coin. I found a wreckers that is like your old Pick a Part and clips like you grabbed, they didn’t/don’t seem to charge for. I’ve also got a VS clubby in Panther Mica, so watching your vids and waiting for the next one. Been watching your videos for a couple of years now (LS VN) keep up the great work, luv n the content!
@@MindieJ Usual Grays purchase..buyer beware😳. If I was a content creator like you, I’d have enough for a few videos, that’s for sure. Got it home on a Friday night, the next morning I had so much shit apart making lists of what needed doing, what it needed for roadworthy and what it needed to calm my A.D.D. I’ve fixed all the electrical issues it had. Just finished getting my mustang ready for a roady tonight, so it’ll come of the hoist and I’ll pop the Group A on the hoist on Saturday and see what scary stuff is underneath. That said, it’s a nice car (from a couple of feet away) and a nice addition to my growing collection.
Having the exact same issues. Rip off wreckers selling broken parts and wanting to go BC coil overs (like I did for my Evo) but not being able to. Happy days.

Hey Chris, take a measurement from the centre of the rim/hub to where you want the guard or rear quarter to sit and give king springs in Queensland a call direct. Tell them the make and model of your car and provide them the measurement and they’ll advise you of the part number of the spring that will provide that ride height. Then pick a quality shortened shock to compliment the ride height you choose
Check out the Shockworks setup that streetmachine used on their lexcen wagon. Quality stuff that works really well. Wheels for commodores, I think HSV came up with the best wheels for them. There’s lots of awesome designs from later models and it fits in with the genre. Just pick your poison.
So, many years ago I had a VR BT1 with FE2 suspension which was the same suspension in an SS and potentially the HSVs too. I bought Kings Super Lows and it was the same if not higher than the stock FE2 haha. Unless things have changed, you might have to go with SSLs
The Shock mounts arent strong enough to handle the adjustable strut, you will need the subframe heavily modified hence the reason they don’t sell the front&rear package. I’ve had both in my vr clubby and went back to original strut&spring
U can use a vx/vy subframe, a lot of the drifters do this in irs Commodores for this exact reason ,vx rear has adjustable camber/caster whereas the earlier ones don't
Personally for a car like this I'd just go with shocks and springs just to retain a factory ish ride, shockworks can def make a set for a VR/VS and they're great, but they aren't cheap, though tbf not many non shithouse coilovers are, and that way you can get them properly valved with appropriate springrates perfect for the car.
I like that you don't try to teach people how to maintain their cars, just let your viewers know that this is how I do it. Genre/period specific suspension choices would most likely be basic performance enhanced springs and shocks that worked well back in the day. Wheels? A very personal choice...
Hey mate. In that period Holden had “FE2” suspension in pretty much SS spec and up, slightly lower and a little stiffer. If you do go the factory shock/spring route but lowered make sure you get lowered spec shocks to match the lowered springs. The lower mount on the front strut is slightly higher up the shaft giving improved ride so you don’t bottom out all the time. The rear shocks are also shorter so the rear spring doesn’t fall out when it becomes unloaded or is jacked up. Hope this helps. Enjoying this series, looking forward to the 1%er’s that really brings this car together. 👍
Don’t put coil overs on it, it isn’t “natural” to the car. Just go with a good set of king springs and Bilstein shocks, you can’t go wrong with that combo on an Aussie car. Work out what wheels you want too before deciding on the suspension because that will affect the height. Only put HSV wheels on it up to VZ so you don’t have to change the stud pattern, again not “natural” for your car. Don’t put commodore wheels on, just HSV. Simmons or VR suitable aftermarket wheels are ok imho. When I had a VS I had Starcorp Fusions 19’s which were mint and suited the car. Also remember because it is IRS, the back suspension sinks a lot when in drive so consider that when selecting wheels/suspension combo. Just keep it as factory as possible with the normal mode of the time being good to do without changing the DNA of the car too much. Car is looking great so far, makes me get motivated to do something similar
The factory VR manual is now available as a pdf. Via Just Commodores. In that should be the factory suspension heights and details. Would eliminate so much conflicting info for you.
Go see Damien at Suspension City in Fawkner, they do King springs tell him where you want your guards to sit in relation to the wheels he will give you the right spring. I've done at least 8 cars in the past few years always Supplied the correct spring.
Hey bro, I hear ya regarding the suspension stuff, been having the same issue with my vr ute, initially I wanted coilovers and after many enquiries I found limited options, first choice was BC but they don't offer a product, next was pedders and then whiteline. Nice Rad cap ASMR! 😂👌
Thanks 😅
U go put a LS engine in this car?
@@Berniessen why the hell would I do that to a HSV
@@MindieJ cause on ure white commodore i asked why u not want to go with a 355 holden and u went like those old donks have no power they are great as a boat anchor a LS is much better for power...
So i though maybe u wanne give this car some decent engine as u dont like the old Holdens and u like to upgrade to make the car better.
@@Berniessen white car already had an LS in it when I bought it
Not modifying the engine in the HSV, waste of money
@@MindieJ U plan on doing some engine modifications like cam or stroke it to 355 or something to give it a bit more power?
@@Berniessen nope waste of money, a decent 355 is 15k+, no thanks
Are you interested in selling the old power window switch?

@@MindieJ spewing, thought that might have happened

Unfortunately I’m not paying 3k for a set of coilovers
@@MindieJ barina springs at worst then hahaha
HSV Tax... HSV are lower so Super Low would make it lower... Kings and Monroe sets...
The car wrecker situation sounds familiar, did you go to particular “local” place?
Yes but……that’s pretty much all wreckers haha
Nah sorry man love the vids but farkkk paying 20 for 2 pins zip tie and a drill man comonnn 😂
If you’re expecting cable tying you’re on the wrong channel
Please get rid of the wood grain around the shifter console 😂
Why? It’s factory
@MindieJ I know it's factory I got bits and pieces of that wood grain in my 2010 c63 and I hate it.. I done carbon fibre instead it looks so rolls Royce for an old man's car 😆
Why don’t you just go see a suspension specialists for some professional advise?
Pedders where you need to go
You were paying for his time
@@fossilfuelenthusiast clearly
65 bucks? Ill take 3
I’ll send bank details
Haha, lol $65. Yeah i do that too. Frustrating but you move on. I wasted my time putting peroxide in my tank after watching a vid hoping it would turn white again...... just buy a new one
Yeh I tried that with my XE lasts about a week before it goes yellow again
But you don't have a problem with Alpine head units or Bridgestone tyres (both Japanese companies btw) on commodores. sorry mate, your take on mag wheels is ridiculous.
Cool 🤷🏼♂️
@@MindieJ AME Modelart - still the best wheel for a commodore.
speak to shockworks? dont go unmatched coils and shocks. i can understand not wanting to mix car mod styles ect (i disagree, but understand), but fuck wasitng money on garbage suspension. shit id rather see airbags.
Not paying 3k for coilovers
