"A Bridge Too Far" (1977), based on real events, deals with allied forces during WW2 trying to get to Germany over Belgium and the Netherlands. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris, and stubborn German resistance result in Arnhem being a bridge too far. With all-star cast, featuring Sean Connery, Michael Cane, Laurence Olivier, Wolfgang Preis, Hans von Borotsky and many more and being directed by Richard Attenborough, this movie would remain a classic, apart from usual Hollywood-heroism.
The widely known musical score was written by one of Britain's finest composers of that time, John Addison, who himself even asked to score the movie as he was part of the real historic events and felt connected to it, as the director. The result is a British and rather optimistic score, of which the main March, which is heard throughout the movie became a beloved gem all over the world. Enjoy!
    P.S.
Although featured before on this channel, Addison's score finally received a proper release, featuring the original (and known) album tracks, remastered and for the first time ever the original film score as recorded for and heard in the movie. Those cues are the ones presented here.

One of the greatest soundtracks I've ever heard, but beware: the melody will get stuck in your head.

I always try to count the number of times I hear the cymbals clang....spot on comment, and have loved it since I saw at the theater in 1977 as an 11 year old. Hard to believe Star Wars and this movie came out the same year.

The only troops in the area are Hitler Youth kids and old men on bicycles, said our leaders. But in reality they were dropped on, not one, but two Waffen SS Panzer Divisions. I was raised on WW2 movies so I know it well, and the music, which is fantastic. Thanks Fred, love your soundtracks. 👍😃

Even as a kid before I knew a lot about World War 2, when Sean Connery's character was told that they had landed on 2 SS Panzer divisions his reaction told me all I needed to know about how bad that was for them.

    • @RailwayBobbie
      @RailwayBobbie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@williammerkel1410 Yes, I remember the scene well. From what I know now I'd say it was the very worst thing that they could have landed on. I used to personally know a few people who took part in the battle and they told me the film was accurate, but the fighting in the streets was so much worse than the film managed to depict. I know they had a lot of respect for the SS troops as well, after the battle, and the SS repected the Paras for holding on. I'm glad they made a film of it.

Addison took part in the actual operation as a member of XXX Corps.
Any film which paid Robert Redford $2,000,000.00 to paddle a boat with Cliff "Cheers" Clavin deserves respect. 😸

John Addison who wrote this music actually took part in Operation Market Garden. He was a tank commander in the 23rd Hussars part of XXX Corps. He also wrote the music for Reach for the sky the story of the British fighter pilot Douglas Bader who was Addisons brother in law.

Still the best film of its type, in my opinion. Screenwriter William Goldman has an absolutely fantastic chapter about its production in one of his books. The scene in which all the planes take off and you see rope uncoiling is incredible. One question that i could never find the answer to is who is the female narrator at the beginning of the movie.

It's not Liv Ullman.@@alexmuenster2102 @Brucejarman3072 @slightlygrouchy - the narrator at the beginning of A Bridge Too Far is the *real* Kate Van Der Host - the lady played in the film by Liv Ullman.

Was interested in listening to this to see what Addison had to offer being that I found his score for Torn Curtain rather pedestrian and pales in comparison to Herrmann's unused score. This one has some nice moments particularly the nocturne after the intro.

Only one criticism to an otherwise brilliant movie with superb music. It was September 1944 but the war was NOT going Hitler's way. Why say that?
