For a movie of this scale made back in the 70's, it's one of the very best. Just loved the Firefly Shermans and the Pak40 ATGs. Great cast, great show.
@@robossuperchannel9434well yes and no. This was probably about the last time they could pull together still operational examples of the real things to use for the closer shots. Those shots of the C-47’s? That’s not CGI. They got enough flying planes and painted them up to give that epic feel of the scale of things.
Uniforms and personal equipment all 100% original, which will never be the case again in a film. In recent war films the tailoring and materials are lamentable.
I like how the mood shifted towards the end of the video. The first part was triumphant and showed the battle while the latter half showed the human cost for the Allied, Axis, and civilians.
Basically the theme embodies what the Allies felt at the time of the operation at first they were confident overly so and uphoric as they thought that the Germans were finished as in the Eastern front army group center was destroyed and France was liberated but as the battles went on they realized that they were being naive in their estimation and planning.
This makes me so proud to be British. My Grandfather fought in the Special Forces in WWII. He won the Military Cross and Bar (means he won the cross twice). He was mentioned in Dispatches three times. He was a remarkable gentleman. Major George Duncan, you can read about him in almost any book about the history of the SBS. He was originally in the LRPG with Stirling and Paddy Maine, knew them both well and counted them as friends. He can be seen in a documentary about Special Forces, there’s a small bit about SAS and SBS on Sicily and he can be seen celebrating with other operators.
The British were ver political in this battle. My dad's cousin had a hard time from them, blamed for failure. The Poles were treated badly also. My dad's cousin got the DSO medal in the battle from the commander.
Saw at the cinema in November 1977. Still holds it own against any war film made ever since. Not "James" Fox - but his dad Edward Fox - playing a noteworthy British general Brian Horrocks who found later recognition after the war in broadcasting as I recall.

This movie had brilliant cinematography and art direction. It also could have had Audrey Hepburn in it too but her asking price was too high. I personally think she placed it too high because of the traumatic memories of that time because she was there in Holland during the invasion and the war. She was a courier for the resistance.

The final image of the little boy marching with a stick as a gun and being the only one visible in the frame after it freezes is the saddest part of the movie for me. It's in our DNA to kill and even what that child experienced, he's still playing a soldier. I just love that symbolism.
This theme makes me very sad and extremely elated by turns. It is a very poignant piece of music and should not be let out without a warning to the effect it will have on the listener's emotions. To some very brave men, those that fell - God rest you. Those that came back, may you have (and had) rest and peace. A duty well done.
Can't make a war movie like this again. It's like a video heritage. Compared to this real power, current picture is a shooting video game. The movie distributor can't return from CG anymore. And the actual veterans and experienced people are gone from this world.
From the 50's until the Vietnam films of the 80s Hollywood could count on armies for hire such as the American, British,Spanish, or Italians to recreate ETO battles and the US Marines and Navy, the Australians, and the Japanese for the Pacific War. With the 70's and 80's you had the Phillippines government providing technical support for Vietnam War epics. With modern wars Hollywood couldn't get access to the most modern American vehicles and aircraft without letting their scripts get vetted by the Pentagon,so they went all in on CGI. Blackhawk Down is a noteworthy exception because the Pentagon approved the script.
I saw this movie as a child in 1977 - went to theater by myself this was long before the idea of PG-13. It was overwhelming, not in bad way, but just in the amount of information to process. Most war movies I had seen before where the 1950s era highly sanitized allies always win movies. It took me three watching of this to grasp that the allies lost. Since then I have also re-watched this and had had the luck of actually having romantic partners who also enjoyed watching it. In 1997 I went to Germany with my SO to visit my in-laws and we could not wait to escape family, booked 2 nights in Arnhem, found a hash shop and and spending two days baked and walked all over from Arnhem to Oosterbeek drop zones to Hotel Hartenstein to John Frost Bridge - climbing over the howitzer near the bridge. Good thing the dutch are tolerant people and just looked amused at a german and american being stoned war tourists. It has fascinated me. I work at the brose factory in Coventry. It is a German family owned company. My Late Father worked as a riveter on the Dakota aircraft after the war. The German people are perfectly alright.
Connery's character General Urquhart was reputed to be the highest ranking officer to personally kill an enemy combatant in WW2. It actually was General Mc Arthur outside his CP in the Philippines in 1944 with his .45 ironically 40 years after his first combat kill with a pistol in the Philippines.

Read Cornelius Ryan's book- the movie did it justice. Had the British only been patient, took the initiative and reinforced the British 1st Airborne with either Sir Richard Gale's 6th Airborne or the US XVIIIth Corps under Matt Ridgway, and had they LISTENED to Dutch & Allied Intel, they could've won.
MGM was going to make "The Last Battle" in 1968, but ran out of money. Unfortunately, if made today, it would probably have to be financed by China, which means it would have to include scenes on how the Chinese played a vital role in the capture of Berlin. (If you doubt me, see the 2019 version of "Midway". The unnecessary scenes of the Chinese helping the US airmen after the Doolittle raid were added because the Chinese demand that they be given heroic parts in every foreign film they finance.)

Patton and bridge too far consider one of my personal collection for WW2 movie. Good song, good story and i love study about history for WW2, especially market garden.
A couple of thoughts: I loved the movie though it was terribly sad. That being said, I thought the film was overly 'star studded' and in some ways that distracted from the overall story. My father watched this with me. I commented how the 'liberation' scenes looked 'very fun'. My father (who lived thru 'The Occupation' in The Balkans) told me very seriously that the 'fun' was being bought at a VERY high price.
@@eagletanker Sometimes I feel that the battle, like Normandy in Longest Day would best be served by a multi part miniseries with an ensemble cast of 'relative unknowns'. Like Band of Brothers: each episode handling a different day or a different unit's perspective.

Very good work i love this film so much
Absolute masterpiece of a movie, and amazing how much the music score makes it so. In my opinion one of the best World War II films ever made. Thank you very much for this video.
THIS GREAT 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 MOVIE IS SOMETHING ALL HISTORY CLASSES SHOULD WATCH 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
One of the best war movies I have ever seen.
The Doctor:"Just one hour, after that you can kill us all you want"
This film will always be the best
I work at the brose factory in Coventry. It is a German family owned company. My Late Father worked as a riveter on the Dakota aircraft after the war. The German people are perfectly alright.
Another masterful edition. Thanks for your great job.
has there ever been such a star-studded cast? I cant think of one.
Longest Day, actually.
@@nickmitsialis And the Longest Day was done up much much better!
@@geodes4762 Yes; I don't know if it's because 20 years older means more vets and authentic kit or not but TLD has something more than BTF.
Well get it Sort it Out!!! Before We Have A Bloody Disaster in our Hands!!!
A great film. Without question. And a great Marshal theme. God Bless Her Majesty The Queen.
The Best war movie ever!
Impressive juxtapositions of appropriate scenes from the film to fit the emotional cadence of particular parts of the musical score. Well done.
The free world owes an eternal debt of gratitude for the heroism, bravery and sacrifice of the greatest generation of WW2…I hope we never experience this scale of conflict in our lifetime. Peace and love to all people of goodwill.❤
'You scared the shit out of me, you stupid bastard.'
'You did a fine job yourself, sir, if it makes you feel any better.'
'You're goddamn right it does.'
Bellísimo! Como siempre, un gran trabajo!
80 year's ago...RIP..🙏
Greatest war film ever made.
0:30 Now you know why Masters of the Air feels lacking....feels artificial. While old war movies like these feel real. These C-47s somehow looks more majestic than B-17s CGI
A movie that can tell so many stories and not get bogged down or uninteresting it's the perfect war movie
This historic movie not only had a cast of the greatest but it was a big scale production. God bless the souls for that operation. Classic great film.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️
British and Americans forever...back in the day these were men😊👍🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸
Read Cornelius Ryan's book- the movie did it justice.
Had the British only been patient, took the initiative and reinforced the British 1st Airborne with either Sir Richard Gale's 6th Airborne or the US XVIIIth Corps under Matt Ridgway, and had they LISTENED to Dutch & Allied Intel, they could've won.
Love the movie. Wish Hollywood would finish the trilogy.
WHOAH! SUPERB, AMAZING, FANTASTIC, aaahhh, what else, aaahhh . . . wait, I'm looking for my thesaurus . . . superbly edited. Kudos to the video editors, copy/scriptwriters
I.......
Don't know what your talking bout
Was there ever a more aptly named film. I understand a quote from Browning.

On Friday I drove over the bridge in Arnhem. That bridge. I was humming that tune
I love the contrast between the British and American officers in this film.
Bij 2:13 zijn er drie diverse muziekthema's die samen een fantastisch geheel maken. Hoofdthema en twee varianten.Prachtig!
A bridge too far....1977
Kelly's heroes....1970
The battle of Britain....1969
Battle of the bulge .......1965
Where eagles dare....1969
Midway.....1976
The eagle has landed......1976
The big red one.....1980
and don't forget the amazing:
TORA TORA TORA....1970
Theirs is the Glory 1946
Battlefield 1949
Patton-1970
The longest day 1962
Stalingrad 1993
Patton and bridge too far consider one of my personal collection for WW2 movie. Good song, good story and i love study about history for WW2, especially market garden.
Airborne jumps, rolling artillery barrage, armory storming in, river crossings so much goodness
The role played by Gene Hackman pointing fingers at Monty was right
Montgomery was lucky not to be sacked for Market-Garden. He was in Eisenhower and Churchill's dog house for a while.
Thanks for uploading this I got a load of memories tied to this film 🎥. ❤️❤️
The Ensemble I find helps, as the blame can't be placed on one person and is spread out like it should be.
@@eagletanker Sometimes I feel that the battle, like Normandy in Longest Day would best be served by a multi part miniseries with an ensemble cast of 'relative unknowns'. Like Band of Brothers: each episode handling a different day or a different unit's perspective.
Wonderful
I find the theme music quite soul stirring
The composer John Addison was a XXX Corps veteran of the battle
One of my all-time favorites
