The Drum sound on Don't Cry is insane. Phenomenal Drum sound. Those tracks sound great on kiss from a rose. I've always been a huge Seal fan . I use a Mojave MA-300 for vocals.
How very special this video is for tracking "great" sounding ... true analog drums. Translated great in my hybrid studio through my SSL Big Six! As always ... amazing content PLAP!!
How cool is this? What a treat! When this song came out, I was already a huge fan of Seal from his first album and the immaculate production work by Trevor Horn. This was a love song like few others.
Chris killer playing . What a tasty, classy drum sound and playing. Perfect for that track. I listened to that tune an album probably 500 times. Just so thankful there's still great music and musicians out there. The pop stuff today is a shame. Ramy played on Don't Cry correct ? That last fill before DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF . Is so unique . Do you know what Seal used for a lead vocal mic Colin? Super easy on the ears. Beautiful verb too.
18:04 you need to workout min-max that potentiometer, so the noise goes away, MD-40 can do the job but seems like if you use it once the pot will get used to it (like a junkie..lol) and will return to the same state after sometime, amazing tips, tx guys
is that the final mix, which is shown in the beginning? isn´t the snare reallyreally far away? I was waiting for that fill to bang in...but the drums are so distant that I am scratching my head... the kick mics sound great btw :)
Wow, that was REALLY great to hear you work the drums from a bunch of chaotic microphone slop into a tight, punchy, exciting and coherent drum performance! 😎👍👍
It’s not the kind of sound I would go for, but one that that sticks out (pun intended) is the massive separation of all the pieces of the kit. Is that a function of the all Neve stuff in the chain, or the Burl converters, or both? It’s almost too much separation for my tastes but it’s nice to start with too much and tone it down.
Any reason the PT inputs for the 2nd outside kick and snare top are the same as the 2 Tom tracks? Seems the kick and snare are also fed into the Tom tracks.
How many people could actually hear the outside bassdrum skin soundhole move against the k&m micstand knob and/or Cable of the inner beater mic? Must admit also happened to me ons time.
"Get all the outboard gear you can afford" yehhhh kinda one of the reasons we don't have our own outboard studios, considering one of those Ocean way monitors is $12k
TBH I dont see why you would ever replace the drums from the original. The clever ways he bounced all that stuff onto a Tascam porta-studio is a feel you could never top. It clearly was good enough given how famous the song was.
Its a biz decision by the artist to get out of the original record Co's hold on an album/song monetarily. Its known as the 7 yr rule. That's why they remix the whole thing. But otherwise you're right, there was nothing wrong with the original Album, won Album of the year Grammy if I re-call correctly ?
You hear two monitor sources at the same time phased while performing Eq, it sounds horrible. Dont know if it is on purpose, but monitoring console and record from protools , leave me a little lost about what is happening. Did anybody heard the same, _???
So - we're getting the HiHat resolved. Will email those that have the multitracks with new files once it is resolved. Thanks so much for letting us know. Sorry!

How cool is that drum sound without plugins! What a job that must be to get something sounding SO good. Great products, drummer and engineer.
Thanks so much!
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't think of anything else to describe this video. Thanks very much
Glad you liked it! Thanks Joey!!
A fantastic song!

Great drum sounds!!! Of course Christopher is an amazing drummer as well! Shared a stage with him many times in years past.

Thank you a lot. This is a golden, priceless session to me. I love the song so much.
Thanks for listening!
"I do not compress the 2 bus" followed by showing off a RND MBP. I LOVE THIS MAN!
haha I think on the recording process there is no need! On a mix...well that's another thing! Ha Thanks ever so much!
Love this approach! Refreshing and daring Ha.
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you thank you!!! super fun pro tips noted down ;)
Superior excellence. Music is a science. And you’re both masterful, genius scientists lol
I love this channel so much 😭💜 thank you Warren!!

Some wonderful insights and advice in this video! Thoroughly enjoyed that!
You ROCK, Ed
Whats up with the 414 on the hat? Is that in figure 8?

nice this kiss from a rose sounds great
Fantastic video . Now if you could share one exactly like this but about the vocals would be amazing
Maybe one day!
Stay tuned! Thanks ever so much!
It's phenomenal seeing how drums and tones were channeled in, especially in a historical sense. Fantastic as always guys

What a fantastic drum sound! ❤
It really is!

Same here, snare sounds too soft for my taste. It lacks power. I understand it’s about the vocal, but the impact could be higher.
Yeah I agree that didn't even sound remotely like a final mix to me.
Organic !!! that's the real deal ;)
It sure is!

Obviously the mic choice/placement matters too.

He say keep reverb similar or consistent. CLA says sod that, use everything always all the time. If it sounds good it sounds good.

Is the 414 on the hat in fig 8 or...?
That's exactly the question that came up to my mind. I guess it has to be, otherwise it won't make sense - upside-down.
@@christophstoll1848 Yep... maybe just a staging error...;-)

Those main monitors look like Cerwin Vegas, haha. I know they are ocean audio BUT they stole the look.
Out of interest anyone know who played drums on the original? Great video btw!
Can we get the samples pls 🙏🏻
Great sounds! Why were these drums re-recorded?
The whole song was re-recorded for a release this year

Nice Mojave ad.
pretty simple 12 mic setup
Ooooh, Batman music? 😆
The snare is almost non existent in the chorus. Still works great.
I thought Earl Harvin performed the drums
Some of the drum files are mis-labelled and or missing, or is it just me? The hi hat for instance - sounds like a Kik mic...

Nice video. Cookie dough ice cream is garbage!
Nice melody but the words make little to no sense. Anytime I tried to kiss a rose, I got a bunch of petals in my mouth.
Ha!

Very nice gear, but strangely mediocre drum sound and quite arrogant producer.
