very very VERY helpful! Would be nice if you explained a little more on what quality of the sound you were bringing up instead of just naming numbers, which you totally did a lot of the time. But just for more versatility on sounds, describing EQ and the "click of the kick usually around x-khz" would be helpful to me, just to get to know more about what your looking for when making these decisions! Followed along step by step and took notes on the whole thing, I don't think I've ever gotten a better drum sound!
Would it be bad to put the drum Tape bus inside of the overall drums bus? or would you recommend taking those two busses and sending them to their own group to have own fader for drums. Is it bad to have the drum tape bus mixing into the compression of the drum compression bus? Just curios in terms of workflow, I love how it sounds outside of the bus, but Im wondering if you can achieve the same effect but not have a drum track outside of the drum group
Great video. Very in depth and shows exactly how you mix drums. Much better than so many of the videos out there just explaining what to do and not actually showing the step by step process. Thanks
Nobody's asking you to go this in depth and yet you do. And how much we are thankful for you Colt is so much that it will never translate through the TH-cam comment section. Thank you so much ❤
Moved my SM57 off the top side of my snare and started using a KSM8. Not sure if you’ve ever tried this, but I am loving it. Lots of fullness with proximity rejection. Love it even more run through a Portico 511 and Midas 512 Eq’d to taste. Like a silk gunshot!
I’m a drummer and engineer - both with over 15 years of professional experience, and while my tastes would have me treating my primary drum sounds differently from your tastes, I REALLY want to commend you for taking a very reasonable and practical approach to it. As a drummer I just don’t feel that the folks using 3 different types of mics/transducers on the kick drum and multiple mics on each tom (not to mention multiple sets of room mics) are really getting better drum recordings. I don’t think they hit as hard and I don’t think they sound any more realistic. That Lauten snare mic sounds monster! (Although for a $400 condenser mic I kinda feel like it ought to), so thanks for bringing us a great find! 😎👍👍
This is incredible! watching how you approach EQ like this, instead of doing narrow surgical moves and this whole video made me go back to a drum mix i've just done and remix it. And now I feel like a better human being. THANK YOU COLT!!!!
Powerful as always!!! I love this. Even after 20something years in the studio, I always learn new things and get assurance and motivation. Thank you bredren.
I’m loving that Lauten mic man! I think it’s meatier not really with on board eq or design but I think they somehow enhanced the transients of the 180-200hz frequencies that’s why it feels so much stronger and solid yet still natural.
Hey @ColtCapperrune Have you ever though of running an event? A paid event where people could come and learn from you in groups? Seriously, what you just did is beyond valuable for the home audio nerd. People who don't have studios and don't have friends with studios. This stuff is incredible and more valuable than any mix "trick" video. Start to finish, concise, to the point, no "this is the only way". Bro, you're the real deal. Thank you. So much. Thank you.
OH MY GOD. That snare reverb trick is GENIUS. Why have I never thought of that. I always get one shots for every drum session so I’m going back to remix my current projects. Such a good idea. Especially since I do mainly worship music which is typically massive massive snare sounds. I always end up making my own sample with verb baked in but then I can’t change it without building a new one, and trigging a verb sound always gets weird. THANK YOU
Definitely a great trick. You can also sample your own snare sound from the track, just have the drummer give you a few nice isolated hits (so no bleed) and use that to trigger the reverb. Makes for an even more natural blend, if that’s what you’re going for.
Excellent video. Here’s a product, here’s how you use it, here’s why I think it’s the best, here’s how you mix with it (in detail), with a couple of tips and tricks thrown in. More of this please mate
"Yeah just called up my friend Lester Estelle to record drums for my YT vid"... as you do :D That guy's a beast, I've followed his stuff for years, so you're already starting in a good place! I'm a drummer + mix engineer so this video was brilliant on so many levels. Thanks for putting this up, not only have I learned a bunch of cool techniques, but I've also found a great way to deplete the bank account because I'm absolutely going to be buying one of those Lauten snare mics!
That tom trick is beautiful...I can't believe this information is free. 😏 and then I saw the triggered snare verb by sample....what the heck that's genius lol
Great tutorial. I learned a lot from the tutorial and am looking forward to trying some of these tricks like the snare reverb and tom bleed automation.
Hope you read this Colt 😅 You’re such a nice guy and I admire your work and the way you approach your job/passion. Great channel, please never stop making these awesome videos 🤘
Hi Colt, hope all is well. Thanks for the great content! Currently wanting to try something new for my snare mic, so I came back to this video to see which route to take.. Now that a few months have passed.. did you continue to use the Lauten Snare Mic as your go to choice for Snare, or did you change to a different option? If you have been using a different one, which mic is currently your favorite for snare?
@@ColtCapperrune it´s kinnda strange to see, how the traditional brands rely on their "classic" products, while newer companies make realy great stuff. I replaced my SM57 on my snare with an Austrian Audio OD5, and it´s awesome
Great stuff man! Would have loved to see a bit more bypassing of the moves as you went to see the A/B of each step. The Lauten snare sounds pretty great tho.
Awesome video Colt, I learned a ton about drum mixing from this. I recently saw a video by Jordan Valeriote (Hardcore Music Studio) where he shows off his companies new plugin called "silencer" and it seemed to work absolutely transparently at eliminating bleed in any instrument. It was pretty mind blowing. May save you and any other mixers/drum editors out there a ton of time especially on toms.
Just got my first drum mic set (not as nice sadly, but it'll do!) so this was well timed and very informative. I love the detail you go into with regards to which mics provide which part of the sound.
im wondering when you boost low-end on the snare, why not boost closer to the snare fundamental (170-180 judging from the eq curve)?. That would give you a thicker sound with less boosting needed?... just curious to understand your thoughts behind it. Thanks for great video.
Apparently the Lauten snare mic has a built in limiter reducing the amplitude. Not necessarily a bad thing. It may be one of the key components to get more of that ”body” sound right out of the mic.
What mics are you using on the rest of the kit are they all Lauten? I see an LS 308 On the toms , LA120 over cymbals, LA 320 as overheads, Eden on the outside kick and an LS 208 and beta 91 inside? Sounds like my kit except I have tom mics on both top and bottom and a snare mic on the bottom!
Don´t you like the gates on the ssl channel strips for the toms? They do something close to what you are doing manually. And do you ever use a gate in your snare? Very very good video. Thanks for the taking the time to make it!
Great, great vid ! Btw, I can't find the video you mentioned about the phase relationships. Could you eventually add the link below ? I love your channel, I already learnt a lot with it
Why not use Volume Trim on the toms instead of Volume automation? Have you tried Sonnox Drum Gate at all? Seems like something that would be handy for your workflow. Thanks for the detailed video!
To me, there’s only cons in doing that, as it starts to sound unnatural if you completely eliminate all bleed. This has been the best thing I have figured out, so it minimizes bleed as much as possible, without starting to sound unnatural.
Great vídeo man!! I recommend you to test the “Silencer” gate at least for the toms. It would save you a lot of time of automation. Greetings from Spain!!!
I feel like you have the makings one hell of a online course on production, music business, Engineering, mixing, mastering, session guitar, video. YT, ProTools.... I could go on and on. Considering all your YT content you probably have most of the footage already in the can... Some editing and a snazzy subscription based website or put it on one of the current training platforms.... 🤤
Amazing video, as always ) Thank you so much, Colt! Drum sounds are so good that I would like to make samples from them and use them in my productions. Will you permit that?
Sounds Pretty Good, I think I still prefer the SM57 best with the Tab mod I have over these. Smoothes out the fizzy high end of a typical 57. The lauten sounds good, I'll have to try it sometime. Never liked the M201, always sounded boxed in and sterile to me. We all have different tastes I suppose
As someone who loves a fat snare sound…. I honestly can’t get over the Tom tones in this. 🤌 great tuning, mics have great rejection. Snare still sounds great, but I honestly think the Tom’s shine even more before you even touched them up, then they keep getting better with OH and rooms. Just shows source over ‘toys’ wins every time (rejection still helps a ton!) 🤣 even with a little youtube compression. great job.
So in the room, I always try to position them, so it’s the most balanced picture of the kit. After that, I don’t do any more phase alignment. But I do high, pass the rooms, so it doesn’t hurt the low end of the kick drum regardless of the phase relationship
I love a fat snare! I think we have similar taste in that regard. Would you mind sharing what snare was used on this recording and/or your FAVORITE fat ass snare of all time? :)

You can’t squeeze blood out of a rock. If you’re not using killer mics, killer microphone preamps with Killer Mike placement, and a killer acoustical environment with a killer drummer who knows how to hit the drums correctly, you’re always going to be wondering how come your recordings don’t sound like the records do. I had a friend who was a Grammy award winning engineer, and he told me when he would receive recordings from Nashville, everything sounded right. There was no need to EQ the piano tracks, or any other track for that matter. People in Nashville know what the F they’re doing And they’re not using 20 million microphones on the piano either. Sometimes it was just two mics and it sounded right. I mean David Foster, right. This was 20 years ago. Now everything is sample based mixed in with real microphone recordings because nobody wants to spend the time or probably doesn’t know how to get the right sounds.
I hope this helped someone!!

Why are you using plugins when obviously you own a 30k Fairchild compressor?
Are these plugins actually better for drums than the Fairchild or did you choose them for illustration purposes?
Why you're using the proq3, you said Kirchhoff is much better. What's wrong? Too me, that doesn't feel alright. So, I stop following.
for real mixes you don't need so much low end on the snare.
