You talking about the API bass shaping made me happy. I’m a professional bassist before anything and for years I’ve told bassists who asked about my tone “I don’t boost the real lows at all, I boost slightly the low/low mids intersection at around 100hz”. Bassist think low mids are the mud point but they aren’t! That’s exactly where the bumpin roundness thing happens. I also run with my tone wide open (unless asked otherwise) so the engineer gets to decide how much high freqs they need in the mix. Helps me play more carefully too 🤷♂️
Have to agree with most of these but especially the SM57 and using a hardware or waves “rbass” plug in for the sub/bass. I use it for a single drum mic ala dapkings ( mic placed 1 inch next to kick and about 2 inches from batter side of kick facing the snare and it captures the fizz of snare and the r bass brings out a fat kick sound using only one sm 57! It just works!
Not that famous and also not cheap but absolutely amazing: Millennia STT-1. Even if they are known in classical music, it’s no problem to e.g. record bass with a lot of „girth“ for rock.
Warren, SSSHHH. Yamaha guitars are a best kept secret. I have a Yamaha Storia acoustic I got for 500$. Nice to hear Warren give props to Paul Rodgers. One of my favorite underrated singers. I don't think I truly appreciated Paul with Bad Company or Free, but I loved his work on the first Firm album which is also very underrated. That's when I learned to listen closer to Paul's voice and the soul he puts into his performances.
Warren, I have never heard you really talk about those two all-silver looking units with the big VU meters. What are those? They look to be compressors, but not sure
I’m hybrid too. My TG2 preamp gets a lot of love on input sources. My UA4-710d gets used during the mix a lot as that the tube vs solid state dial in ability is sooo good and having compression ability is a nice bonus.
Those Pultecs are always juicy sonic gold!! So sad to hear about Averill's passing. A real pioneer in providing serious audio gear for large and small studio owners. His API 312 pres were THE thing to have back in the 90s and into the 2000s.
Following your tip on the EQP500A I used a Waves PuigTec EQP1A to try the boost you demonstrate on a bass in a Death Metal mix and was flippin blown away (boosted both the 100 and 3k to ten). Used it right after Sansamp Bass Driver and the Amplitube cab sim to simulate kind of a recording situation. Lots of processing follows the EQ (like dynamic EQing and lots of compression), but the difference is still huge! So, yeah, thanks for another major (MAJOR) game changer in my best practices!
I have a Godin Session Custom Triple Play and I also have the same Fishman receiver that you have on your Revstar. Installed mine on a partscaster Telecaster.
That sub bass synth thing at 7:55 got me thinking.....run a kick track out into my Moog Grandmother's audio in, through the low pass filter with a bit of resonance and the cutoff around 50hz ish....mix that back in parallel to the kick.....???
Years ago I owned a Pro Audio version of the dbx 120, to add low end to my home stereo. I wish that I had kept it, but I moved around too much back then. The Plugin Alliance version is called, bx_subsynth and is also available as bx_subsynth Subharmonic Synth, in the UAD-2 ecosystem! Have you started using your Universal Audio system yet?
A Pro recognizing the value of Yamaha guitars. Nice to hear in a "guitar-world" dominated by an unquestionable Fen-Gib-Mar-Tay deaf fundamentalism (people out there: do no forget you have ears and eyes to judge by yourself the value of gear). I have a revstar 620 and a Yamaha LJ26. The "620" is a good piece of gear but the acoustic "26" is such an outstandingly crafted guitar that every acoustic player should try out alongside the Mar-Tay dyad.
I have the LL16! It's been WONDERFUL for tracking for pretty much every record I've done for me or other artists. Cannot believe how great the DI is, too, which is huge deal. DI always sounds awful to me, but I regularly blend the DI in from this thing.
Love the new desk and monitor - wow I haven't seen them before! Unfortunately, I sold my Yamaha 12 string (1980 model) and my Ibanez 12 string (1971 model) when I changed jobs and states in early 90's - regret it now! Based on your stuff, have a Lewitt 440 Pure on layby.
As a poor beginning musician, all i could afford is only one mic. Because i wanted to make indie rock music and mic my amp i went and get a SM57. If i can't get any other mic for a while i'm quite confident with only this one because it works great with guitars and also vocals, and it forces me to learn to EQ properly so i can use it on a lot of things. It has fallen so many time, it's so sturdy. I recommend it for every other budget minded recording artist like me.
i LOVE the 57. but i'm curious why you didn't pick the ML-1 as it's basically a lot of mics in one? is it because of the price or becauseML-1s can't accurately replicate the sound of a dynamic?
I will have to have look at a Yamaha LL16. Would be an interesting comparison - I have a vintage ('69 -'72) Yamaha FG-500 which I have made quite a few recordings with. It was one of the best purchases ever at $75 with the hard case. Every guitar player who has played it has made a positive comment on it's tone (and told me to let them know if I ever want to sell it). I think they go for almost as much as the LL16 these days. If you come across one at a good price, worth looking into.
Just got my first pedal with an ODR style circuit and my goodness do I love it! For years, I just assumed based on the color it must be some TS style pedal, but I was so wrong! Great video, thank you, Warren. I definitely want to add a DBX 120 style device to my collection. I consider to purchase a DBX 510 once I got my 500 series frame.
Cheat answer: nothing as my gear is currently in pieces at multiple locations. Beyond that I don’t typically use any single piece of gear daily; some days are spent with nothing but a hardware sampler, others the guitar rig, tabletop synth setup... it’s interesting to dive deep into probing the limits of varying gear with restriction
Can you please do a video on different types of analog compressors and EQs. I believe that you own many analog gears. It would be helpful when people like me use the software emulations of the analog stuff.
I find overdriven guitars sound best when you go a bit OTT on the pedal side, but then back off a little on the guitar volume. You get a lovely choppy rhythm sound.

Super video. The second time I watched it! Question about the Nobel ODR-1. Is yours the model with the bass cut switch? I am considering buying one of the full size versions. Thanks as always Warren. Philip From NYC Area....
no talk of basses :( lol. At the moment my setup is basic for bass recording, P bass with flats into an apogee duet, into logic using one of their preset bass amps. its fine and gets the job done, when I'm back at my main place I can start using some of my other basses and amp.
7:56 anyone else looking for a bass enhancer, just got myself a peavey kosmos sub synth... There's an SOS article that mentions deftones's record using one. 2¢
Yamaha is probably the best brand to choose if you want to get bang for the buck, their mid-range guitars sound awesome 😎 I have an electro acoustic and using the proper strings the overall tone is great it doesn’t lack of low end good mids smooth top end...
If you have an SM57, of course use it, but I picked up a Blue 100i and I really prefer it on guitar cabs because it captures the low end better (although I still pair it with a Royer) and is slightly less fizzy. Also, while I love your videos, please stop using the SM7 for voice. It works great for a lot of people but for some reason your voice sounds muddy and inarticulate when you use it, especially since you modulate your voice a good deal (which is a good thing overall, but when your voice gets softer, the articulation is really lost), and that lavalier mic that you use sounds so much better. I suppose you could eq that mic to bring out the top end articulation, but why when you could use another good mic I'm sure you have (or just stick with the lavalier since it is remarkably clear).
...and if anyone is still reading: for acoustic guitar, while I think that Yamaha is great for a kind of generic acoustic guitar (which is probably exactly what you want for a lot of pop songs), if you want a cheap acoustic guitar with character (rock, folk), check out the mid-70s Takamines (the Martin knock offs), they still often sell cheap and sound really nice especially after a good setup.
Fantastic video Warren, and straight to the point. Thank you so much for the stellar advice. BTW I've been looking for a DBX 120 for awhile now, looks like they're going to jump up a bunch on Reverb and Ebay now. Ha ha.

Hey warren, So how are you interfacing ll that gear? I know through the console but are you having to use avid hardware to get around that pesky 32 channel restriction? Curious as I am hoping to open a studio soon and I am thinking of getting a console.
The DBX sub synth my equivalent an Aphex 104 exciter with big bottom very cheap on ebay. I use the 2 channels daisy chained gives you 2 x harmonics and interesting effect when you overdrive 2nd channel with first with bass or kick.

Question about the Nobel ODR-1. Is yours the model with the bass cut switch? I am considering buying one of the full size versions. Thanks as always Warren.

no talk of basses :( lol.
I suppose you could eq that mic to bring out the top end articulation, but why when you could use another good mic I'm sure you have (or just stick with the lavalier since it is remarkably clear).
...and if anyone is still reading: for acoustic guitar, while I think that Yamaha is great for a kind of generic acoustic guitar (which is probably exactly what you want for a lot of pop songs), if you want a cheap acoustic guitar with character (rock, folk), check out the mid-70s Takamines (the Martin knock offs), they still often sell cheap and sound really nice especially after a good setup.
great sounds from your gear Warren. Your clients should find something they really like as well to put down on the daw.
I'd really love to get my hands on the 1173 and maybe the 1028 as well one day.
Both wonderful!
Fantastic video Warren, and straight to the point. Thank you so much for the stellar advice. BTW I've been looking for a DBX 120 for awhile now, looks like they're going to jump up a bunch on Reverb and Ebay now. Ha ha.
I see Crown RP-3 electronics from one of their old tube tape decks. How do it use it now?
Catching the sun there Warren 🌞

Hi, Warren. Loving your content as always, please keep it coming. Out of curiosity, what Fender amp is that with the electric guitar demonstration? Would love to check it ou! Thanks and cheers from Colombia!
i was instantly transported to Rumours or Tusk era Fleetwood Mac when Warren jammed on the Echotone :-)
I just wonder if this one is less good or better or if you have tried it? -Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel Microphone Preamp, Inductor EQ & Diode Bridge Compressor. It is in the same price category. I would love to hear your thoughts! Sunshine from Stockholm Sweden
Hey warren, So how are you interfacing ll that gear? I know through the console but are you having to use avid hardware to get around that pesky 32 channel restriction? Curious as I am hoping to open a studio soon and I am thinking of getting a console.
Hi Rune, thanks ever so for your message! I have 48 channels output with my Avid system.
Thank you so much . It is thanks to people like you that NF progresses Every day !!!
Aw shucks! You’re very welcome! I’m glad to be able to help!!
The DBX sub synth my equivalent an Aphex 104 exciter with big bottom very cheap on ebay. I use the 2 channels daisy chained gives you 2 x harmonics and interesting effect when you overdrive 2nd channel with first with bass or kick.
I have no room for more gear, I'll have to go to his mixing low end video, that's a great one!
Marvelous video as always, Warren! I enjoyed it ever so much! :D
Any chance you're still planning on interviewing Ulrich Wild again about the new Static-X album. You said you might a few weeks ago. I'm not impatient, just curious!
