  • When your team makes as much noise as the Vancouver Canucks did this season, the vultures will start to circle. Teams around the league are aware that the Canucks are tight to the cap, and are eyeing their free agents. Dakota Joshua is one such free agent. He has a tantalizing mix of speed, skill, and physicality. He is the type of player that can be an X factor in a playoff run, and there will be no shortage of suitors for his services on July 1st. If the Canucks cannot sign him, there are players on the market that they can consider as replacements, and some in-house options. In this video, I go over those options!
As always, if you guys enjoyed this video, please like, comment, and subscribe!

@ScottStenlund Did JOSHUA say that or is that what OTHERS are saying ABOUT him? There's a world of difference between those, and if Joshua likes it here and sees a real chance to be part of a team building towards a Cup contender, he may be willing to go below market value in a Home Discount to stay a part of a possible winner and keep more cap space free for bringing in or retaining other talent the team will need.

    • @Seriously_Unserious

@ScottStenlund If it comes to Hronek or Zedorov, I'd prefer keeping Big Z. He was consistently good in the regular season, and lights out in the playoffs. Hronek was great at times, good at other times, but also prone to periodic slumps.

@ScottStenlundWhere’s the 18 mil coming from? They have 23.7 mil. If they buy out Poolman that number increases to 25.2 and if they can trade Mikheyev then it’s 29.9 or basically 30+ mil if they send Di Giuseppe down. Even if they retain 1-2 mil on Mikheyev that’s still 28-29 mil. They will have to let Lindholm and Zadorov walk because they want too much and won’t budge, but they still have lots of options in the FA market.

Totally agree! I felt that is a very reasonable ask based on what he does and the production we got from him. There was plenty of times I thought the Dakota/Garland line was by far our 2nd best line only next to the Miller/Boeser line!
If we can get him closer to $3m than $3.5m for like 2-4 years, IMHO that’s a solid deal!

I also teach summers in a BCHL defensive hockey school and I’m telling you right now he would have hit 25-30 goals this season had he not got injured. He played third line minutes and is hard working, tough, defensive minded, grinding powerforward and has natural talent and goal scoring ability. Joshua has not hit his ceiling and Will absolutely grow into a solid 25-30 goal power forward for a few seasons. 5 at 3.5 is a steal for him, I know talent, I see the little things, I talk to NHL scouts alot doing what I do and they have taught me alot of things to watch and look for especially with development of players. I have also played hockey for 30 years at a high level and coached Junior. I have alot of experience and knowledge and if you disagree with me I respect your opinion but in my professional opinion I see some serious talent developing with him especially with the Chemistry Garland and him have, thats rare to find these days.

I have a lot of faith in this management group after the way they filled out this roster last year with just $11 million in cap space. This year they will have $20 million or so with Soucy and Suter still under contract. They seem to have the skills to find what they need. Obviously, paying a 3rd liner, no matter how good they are, north of 3 million dollars per unless they're an elite, Selke type of centre like Lindholm is ridiculous. But if people want to underestimate Joshua's value to the team because he's not fast (like a certain 40 goal scorer), they're welcome to that opinion. Clearly, the cap is a big obstacle and you can't pay a 3rd line player big money like Jim Benning did. But if they can settle on 3 million or lower on a short term deal, unless they think they can find another diamond in the rough, I think that makes sense. He was playing like a $3-4 million player this year and came up clutch for the team on numerous occasions. That line with Joshua and Garland (and either Bluegar or Lindholm) was the Canucks' best and most effective line on most nights. That can't be underestimated. But again, you don't want to overpay either, so if they can find another guy who is ready for a breakout like him, that may make some sense.

I think the playoffs exposed many of the Canucks as being not built for today's fast, north-south NHL. Dakota is one of them. I like his work ethic, but he doesn't have the effective speed needed in today's NHL because of his lack of puck moving, puck handling ability (and overall, he isn't really that fast). What disapointed me about Joshua in the playoffs was his poor play along the boards (all of the Canucks except for Garland was poor in this department actually).
The Canucks need a major re-work. This year's playoffs reminded me of the 2003 playoffs when the super fast Minnesota Wild exposed the slow pace of the Canucks, then we retooled for the next 8 years to make ourselves faster (not just in skating, but in puck movement and transition).
I expect that same retooling to happen starting this offseason as well.

The only way you can replace a player like Petey is by trading for a player who can put up similar numbers, and you know how much that player will cost??
