      Ha ha - at least can't feel it is was a case of "all the gear and no idea" although I do try anyway in that regard :)

    OH how lovely, Tim... you're a speedy guy for ANY age Tim!!! We just had the Paris-Versaille here, finishing at an equally iconic palace. But me I was away in the Bourbannais running my first ever 50k trail race... what a hoot!! Even with the hornet attack at 5km, just to give us all something to distract us from the pain in our legs and hips later on!!😂

      Ah there's me thinking I might need to drop down even further to say 800 metres and you are going the other way. How did you get on? My knowledge of France is next to zero. Is that a hilly area? Mind you no such thing as a flat trail race is there.

    • @bev9708
      @bev9708 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TimGrose Oh exactly … Not a very hilly area no BUT somehow they still managed to put together some thigh burning climbs and descents, 1024m total gain!!😂😂 I’ve been very consistently increasing my volume and distance and elevation gain for almost 2 years now and worked my arse off all summer so I kinda saw it as a training run and kept at a pace I knew I could maintain !! I ended up passing heaps of people in the second half and in the last few kms and finished 15minutes ahead of my goal time … I got quite teary there at the finish line, awesome feeling!!! 😁💪🏻🏃🏻‍♀️💪🏻

    A very enjoyable day Tim talking old running war stories 😊 , washed down with double cake🍰 and ☕ !
    See you in the indoors in a few months.

      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah many thanks for the extended chat over double coffee & cake later. Ought to do a vid on what seasoned masters runners eat in a day :) I guess had better show up indoors now then. Which ones on Open Track do you suggest ? Had a quick look and saw 2 meets at Lee Valley in Dec with an 800 but nothing longer. I checked age graded and at 57 by then I would need a 2:20.8 to do my best ever age graded. Sounds a good target. Split the difference of 2:18 3 years ago and 2:27 this and maybe. Need to do some specific training though this time!!! Far more doable than the marathon. That would need a 2:46.

      @@TimGrose as far as nutrition goes Tim, cake is never too far away on the menu especially on days out 😆.
      As regards indoor competition both events in December at Lee Valley would be good. I always check the start lists to see which would accommodate my ebbing pace better !
      Sheffield have a 1k/2k in November and a 600/3k in December with an 800 later in the month but maybe a bit out of your way.
      My best age grades have been 600m which probably would be my chosen event as the speed can just about last another 30 seconds after 400 !
      In March next year there is the European Masters indoors in Torun Poland(plus of course the British champs ) which may interest you to have a new target as opposed to 42.2 x1000m !
      You could quite easily train at a 10k base with a gradual increase of intensity so as not to lose your aerobic engine.
      Food for thought 💭

      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed and you. Hope you were pleased with your run? I did wonder if they will keep it going as there seemed rather few in the "Adult" waves but the "Family" ones were a lot higher.

    • @boydie71
      @boydie71 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TimGrose I was pleased with my run, I improved my time by 35 seconds. The adult waves were sparse compared to previous years. I'm trying to encourage my mates at Petts Wood to come along next year.

    Great run Tim. I've done this a few times and my best I think was 5:42 back in 2016 when it was held on the late May bank holiday weekend. I remember colliding with a tall, muscular guy the start and for the remainder of the race I took a rather wide line to avoid big groups of runners but ended up according to my Garmin running well over the mile (the mile auto lap bleeped at 5.34). A good fun race but the slight incline along Horse Guards Road before you turn into Birdcage Walk is noticeable. Will have to do this again as very iconic.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is odd at the start now as I have to force myself to avoid being on the front row. Even so I started a bit quick here. Think avoiding drains and the high curb in parts was as much a challenge as other runners and I felt I was going backwards slightly so overtaking was rare LOL ! And yes it is not pan flat is it and in a mile you notice any slight incline more than in longer races but TBH it felt reasonably fiat and fortunately wind was not a factor. At least I haven’t slowed too much in 5 years since my last go - 8 seconds and in fact my track mile earlier this year was fraction quicker than that - 5:28.4 to 5:29 5 years ago to 5:37 here. 4:56 10 years ago might just be possible if I stopped the race after 400 here when was about 74-75 :)

    I really love your data dumps. So interesting to see all of that. Good to see the VF3s are working ok for you too. I’m not sure what I’d pick if I was going to race a mile. VF3 would be my first choice but I’d seriously consider a Takumi Sen 9. I can handle the fit of that shoe for a hard mile effort.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it is "hard" with these short races with no "support" to get footage without basically wasting your race effort. I nearly did not bother this time. As it was I bought a set of race photos for £8 and always talking about race results and Garmin metrics helps. For maximum data geekery have you checked out by Berlin Marathon TH-camr training analysis. I have done this several times now. Takes a fair amount of research hours but I feel I learn something for myself so help useful to somebody else. Need to catch up on a few of your ones. The Streakfly for instance is a shoe I haven't got out too often but perhaps should again. And yeah if in doubt bring out a Vaporfly. Other than Seville my best other race this year I feel was the 18:33 5K I did in April and used the Vaporfly 3 there. Joseph has his new pair BTW and going to use them in 10K at Euro Masters tomorrow. He remarked same as me that they don't feel that great say on warm ups but once "get going" seem good. I missed out on the Evo 1 BTW so will have to "make do" with all these others ones LOL! I might even try do some actual specific training for my next mile or under race. Used to help before shoe choice became more important than miles and workouts banked :)

      @@TimGrose I just finished the Berlin TH-camr video you did. The analysis is priceless, it really is.
      I'm full in love with the VF3 at the moment. It's treating me very well and I'm spending about 40% of my running in it lately (long runs, HMP/MP running, tempo/aerobic running and some easy running in there in the longer runs). I'm rotating two pairs at the moment, one with under 50k on it and the over with over 250k on them. Really enjoying them right now. But I'm only really maxing out at threshold in them right now, I'm not doing any faster harder stuff for the rest of the build...so they are ideal (for me) for that. I'm contrasting them with two pairs of Peg40s for everything else.
      I subscriber of mine suggested i do a VF1/2/3 "vs" video with the same data set as in my Sky+ vs VF3 video. I think thats an interesting idea and will be doing it sometime in November/early Dec, after NYC and using the last of my fitness. I'm curious about the differences now too.
      I'm heading to The States tonight until mid November (Seattle area then NYC). Happy to be leaving 34c training temps for 15c temps. I'm also curious if all the heat acclamation I have from living in Taiwan gives me any benefit (i.e. like training at altitude?). I'll like do a video on that in Oct.
      I'm curious what the wear of Joseph's VF3 looks like. Please, one of you email me a photo post race.
      I don't think you missed much on this drop of the Evo 1 other than bragging rights. I sense a larger release coming in the spring with the way Adidas is promoting it now.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just checked your Power of 10. Very similar PBs in most events I see. Yeah not sure how have missed indoors completely. I guess in my best years in late 80s/early 90s it was still elite only so never really was on my radar plus always assumed being very tall it would not suit me.

      @84Prefontaine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TimGrose I seem to be going back to the shorter stuff as I get older! Although being 40 in March is a bit of an incentive to see how far up the rankings I can get next year. Yes, I only did indoors while having the luxury of having the Cardiff indoor track while at university there but I think you will enjoy it.

      @@84Prefontaine mate of mine has just turned 60 and he does 800/1500 mainly now as he says at least it is over quicker! He was a chaser and certainly better I thought at 3K-10K than shorter.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really want to give that another go hopefully next year. Think I did it last in 2018/19 and remember feeling rough at 800 and everyone seemingly passing me before sort of picking it up again in last 200 or so by which time it was too late.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @RobertNaik
    @RobertNaik ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done Tim. So people seem to get slower at 35 on. I only started running again at 45. So it’s a pb every year still.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I certainly had slowed a "little bit" by 35. My best ever 1500 was 3:55 aged 25 but I did 4:00 at 35. Does not sound much but I knew my days were numbered in that event as it were. I then largely stopped focusing on the 800/1500 and went to the marathon. I did a video a while back looking at how long you can improve for and it was largely for most people for about 9 years after starting training seriously and not your actual age.

    Good video Tim, I did consider it myself and looking at the results would have finished fairly high I guess! I ended up climbing Snowdon for JDRF on Saturday instead so couldn't do it. A quick one, you mention indoors at Lee Valley, where can I find info of these online? Dave Tune wants me doing some shorter stuff on the track and these events might be a good place to start over the winter. I've Googled, quickly looked and can't find a lot!
    Also, you doing any XC this year? Can I expect to see you in Richmond Park two weeks on Saturday?!

      One extreme to the other then! Those Lee Valley ones are on OpenTrack e.g. data.opentrack.run/en-gb/x/2023/GBR/bfta1i/ Re XC well I have bought some Dragonfly XC spikes but the Surrey Masters and 1st Surrey League I am going to be away

      Yeah there seemed a lot on last weekend what with likes of Berlin Marathon and the 10K here on the Sunday as well. Haven't actually entered anything yet but I can see two 800s in December in Lee Valley so that is tempting me. Maybe a 1500 as well. Need to decide around December if want to do a spring marathon. I will have a London GFA place at least.
