Hey...it's not just the guys that dream of a zero-turn! LOL I bought one 5 years ago and actually love mowing our place. Thanks for your videos. Always enjoy watching.
628DirtRooster It cost 1300,I picked it up in Baton Rouge at the ABF confrence last year.Maxant had a booth there,so they brought it down for me and saved me the shipping.I have been having one of there water jacketed bottle tanks, I love it they make a great product.
***** It's a pain to use with deep frames. They don't really fit right and as you could see it tries to take off even with two big guys leaning on it. Still it's better than hand cranking. This one will likely receive a few modifications.
I like that extractor. My one is prehistoric!! My mum bought it 40 years ago and it's still going(ish). Main thing is, it works 👍 I'll get a new one next year?!?! Maybe 😜
I say yes to the zero turn, it's a bucket list item,,lol Have you ever seen the method some people use where they use a heat gun and quickly melt the caps open it looked pretty cool and seemed pretty efficient. Take care
My dad tried the heat gun method a couple of times last year. He said it worked really good on some frames but on about half of them he still had to work on them with a tool after using the gun. I've never personally tried it though. What I really want to try is an electric bread knife.
Wow this is a fantastic vid! Funny and very informative. That spinning extractor is really cool. I was amazed to see you handle this hive with no gloves. Man I get a bee sting and I swell up like the Sta Flow Marshmallow man LOL... Thanks for sharing! PS I want a zero turn riding lawn mover too LOL.. I guess I am stuck with my John Deere haha... Great vid Kudos!
The more you get stung, the more immune to the venom you become. To most beekeepers, getting stung by honey bees is less painful than getting in an ant bed.
628DirtRooster Well I was in highschool and we had fun with all sorts of equipment being stupid and young. The Z-mower we had was a john deere. The older one did better wheelies. We used to take em behind baseball and do donuts same thing with the Gators too. Only thing we didn't do this with was the Triplex mower. In all fairness though, I did do all the repair work on the equipment so I figured a little fun was due. We never broke anything though, it was always another class who didn't know how to use the equipment.
gokartbuyer When I was growing up we had an old 8 horse power snapper 26" cut. That was big stuff back then for residential cutting. That thing did more wheelie popping and mud riding that grass cutting. We would just have to wash it off and hide the evidence before my dad got home. He always wondered why the thing used so much gas. This Scag will pop a small wheelie unless you are going up a steep hill and then you can scare yourself with it. The scary part is that the blades won't disengage totally and there is no cover on the belts so if you rolled it who knows what would be the outcome. Might lose some fingers or feet.
628DirtRooster Ha I remember them old Snappers with the engines in the back. Good mowers they were. Funny we did the same thing in turf as there was a hose where the sidewalk ended at baseball/softball. So much fun rippin the parking brake and pulling 180's or sliding that ass end everywhere (tire had so little tread). That Scag is scary man! Danger is the spice of life I guess. Like I said all this happened when I was stupid and young, now I'm stupid and old. A bit harder to get away with stuff now! lol
I like having all the tools in my arsenal but I prefer the scratcher. The roller works and there was NO wax in the uncapping tank but I'm faster with a scratcher.
I saw a fellah once use a heat gun to melt the cappings off from the honey comb. It was simple, took less than thirty seconds each side and worked easily, no mess at all. Have you ever tried it? or do you use one?
I don't know how you boys use 10 frame deeps. I'm only 26 and a strong buck if I dare say so, and my 10 frame mediums wear me out! Those extractors are all about balance. I try to even out the frames I put in my three frame (hand crank) extractor but it will still hop around if I"m not careful. I actually prefer an uncapping knife to help equalize things. Some frames get pulled super thick and others thin. If you just puncture a thick frame it stays thick. Plus I have a decent market for beeswax so I don't mind having the extra cappings.
Lift with your back man. We've used all methods of uncapping. I'll keep my roller but probably won't use it much any more. It's just too slow. Eventually I'm going to design my own uncapping machine. I've got the design on paper I just have to get around to building it.
Do you get air bubbles when you extract? I spun my first two frames after a quick visit to my remote hives. The honey was cloudy with air bubbles but has been clearing for the past three days. Bottom half is beautiful light gold, top half still cloudy. Does this happen to you?
628DirtRooster; Just check out the way a toploading washer is constructed and you'll figure how to build a frame around the extractor and absorb the off balance vibrations.
+the brain These things aren't as heavily constructed as a washer. If you run them slower and for longer they don't shake as bad and they still get the job done but it really takes a lot of time when you have a lot to do.
I say 100 or so but my older friends disagree. LOL They get worn out extracting honey from a dozen hives. You may never need to buy one. There are a few people around here who will rent you their equipment at a very affordable rate and extractors are pretty expensive.
628DirtRooster yeah just getting into it this spring im going to start with 2 hives .think i will suffer for awhile before i bite on that piece of equip. thanks for all your help brother .God bless
There is a kind of a screen that is between the brood box and the honey super (box) that the worker bees can pass through but the queen can't. That keeps her from laying eggs in the honey super.
Ironside451 They stay in the boxes. Most people use the deep boxes for brood (larvae) and typically stack them two high. Then a medium (honey super) goes on top above a queen excluder.
It's educational enough! Somebody might just slip up on something! I'll pass on a zero-turn. I've run them but when they tear up it's BIG bucks. I can fix my old Craftsmans with junkers I find laying around. One is 35+ years old and still has to bail the newer ones out.Did this evening. matter of fact. Based on the way that you guys are handling the frames and lids on these bee boxes, is it safe to presume that you guys are working with European breed bees and not Africanized? Because, in other videos that I have watched on You Tube, Africanized honey bees would not be very tolerant of the jarring and jolting of their hives.
Right now I'm giving it away to people I know. I might look into selling it at the farmers market. I think it'll depend on how much I get in the fall. I also want to keep some for myself of course.
If I had plenty of bees in a place where marijuana was legal, and I let the bees do their thang with say, a valley of marijuana crop, do you think maybe the honey would be flavoured or affected by the type of plants the bees were living with? Sounds stoopid, I know, but just a thought...
+SM JungleTaktikz Not stupid. It's a subject we joke about a lot but we/I don't know since we are not in a state where grows are legal and if they are getting on illegal crops we don't know about it. Bottom line is I haven't researched and don't know if there is anything about a marijuana plant that a honey bee would be attracted to. Pollen, nectar and sap are the only things they would want.
Dam weak ass legs on the Extractors > I had to make a wooden base stand . it also raised it up where you can set a 5 gal bucket under it cheers brother
Haha,I know what you mean about rich folk logic. Man,second video I seen today with an electric extractor rolling and bucking like an unbalanced washing machine. Ever figure out how to fix it?
Hey...it's not just the guys that dream of a zero-turn! LOL I bought one 5 years ago and actually love mowing our place. Thanks for your videos. Always enjoy watching.
I think my wife wants one too.
Roster, Thank you for showing the Queen in the lid. Now I know the difference since I had the chance to view the difference.
LOL. The wording of that sentence made my brain go, "huh?".
Looks like yall were having fun. I have got to get to mine soon.I bought a Maxant 20 frame, cant wait to take it for a spin.
Holy smokes. It won't take you long to sling all your honey with that monster. How much did that set you back?

628DirtRooster The extractor yall are using,is that the one that is Italian made? And how do you like it.?I almost bought one of them.

How long has your family been working with bees? I would love to know the story.
Ten years.
Very informative video, and you all have a good time doing them.
Where did you get your uncapping roller from?
Either Mann Lake or Dadant
Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I like your videos a lot, very informative, and a great sense of humor you have!! Keep em coming...
Your friend is smart. Mowing your grass keeps you alive
Randy, cool tools gents! Serious investment!
I like that extractor. My one is prehistoric!! My mum bought it 40 years ago and it's still going(ish). Main thing is, it works 👍 I'll get a new one next year?!?! Maybe 😜
Haha We have one of those. Looks like a modified carnival ride.
+628DirtRooster they do!!! It's got a chain driving the wheel like you see at a fair ground!! It shakes so much it mangles the comb every so often 😆😆
+jon alford I think I WILL get one next year 😉....update....I did and you definitely get what you pay for. I should've got a better one🙄

+628DirtRooster need a good jiggle knife. Good videos brother
LOL I still swell a little. I have a red puffy ear and a knot on my forehead from today.
You are like a bear, know the risks and rewards LOL.. But keep going after that sweet gold! :-)
The more you get stung, the more immune to the venom you become. To most beekeepers, getting stung by honey bees is less painful than getting in an ant bed.
Great video! Very funny and informative! 🐝
Ha! Thanks Rosie
Educational. Humph! Ya never know whatcha doing will educate some one in some way.
Love the fun!
Now, I wanna get me some honey!
Used to use them zero turn mowers in Turf class. Great machines, loads of fun to use. FYI great wheelie machines! lol
+gokartbuyer We have a Scag. It's good at getting stuck. lol
628DirtRooster Well I was in highschool and we had fun with all sorts of equipment being stupid and young. The Z-mower we had was a john deere. The older one did better wheelies. gokartbuyer Still fun though.
You have a very tolerant wife. When I extracted in the kitchen, there was a mess left at the end of the process, wax and honey. And, I heard about it.
You have such a cute smile.
I'm so jealous! I'm looking forward to Summer so I can get some serious honey harvesting going.
I'm thinking of getting one of those roller uncappers.
I like having all the tools in my arsenal but I prefer the scratcher. The roller works and there was NO wax in the uncapping tank but I'm faster with a scratcher.
Well I have a lot of questions about this operation but I'll knock it down to just one. Where is the hot biscuit machine?
Down at the Vietnamese donut shop
probably a stupid question but how do the bees make honey in the box if they can't access flowers
They are free to come and go. They aren't locked in the box. It's just their home.
I saw a fellah once use a heat gun to melt the cappings off from the honey comb. It was simple, took less than thirty seconds each side and worked easily, no mess at all. Have you ever tried it? or do you use one?
Done it. It' hit and miss. Depends on if honey is touching the cappings.
Can you take a frame of one colony and put them in another colony?
Sure can. We do it all the time to even out hives or while making splits....
Do you use half depth for your honey supers and full depth for your brood?
Yes
Umm so what is the reasoning behind this?
You guys are so much fun!
Thanks Lauren
I don't know how you boys use 10 frame deeps. I'm only 26 and a strong buck if I dare say so, and my 10 frame mediums wear me out!

Hi, big fan. My hives over wintered and this will be my first harvest. What is the best way to extract honey and strain honey from about 20 supers?
A small manual extractor will do the job fine. three or four frame.
Do you get air bubbles when you extract? I spun my first two frames after a quick visit to my remote hives. The honey was cloudy with air bubbles but has been clearing for the past three days. Bottom half is beautiful light gold, top half still cloudy. Does this happen to you?
It does.
Just curiosity what was the green thing on the one bee?
The queens are painted so they can be tracked. The color indicates the year she was born.
+628DirtRooster ahh ok thank you!!!
628DirtRooster I know, but a series of shocks and springs, and you don't have to sit on it anymore.
the brain Might work. May have to reinforce the legs since they are kind flimsy.
dont know much about bees,, like your videos,, do the GMO crops affect the honey??? just wondering
Some crops are not a draw for them but don't negatively affect the honey. We don't have row crops in our area though.
did you paint the queen bee green ??!
Don't remember
I have seen a video where they used a hot air gun, do they work? It looked pretty effective in the video.
It's hit and miss. Depends on if the honey is touching the cappings.
how many hives does a guy need before he needs to invest in a motorized extractor ?
I say 100 or so but my older friends disagree. LOL They get worn out extracting honey from a dozen hives. You may never need to buy one. There are a few people around here who will rent you their equipment at a very affordable rate and extractors are pretty expensive.
628DirtRooster yeah just getting into it this spring im going to start with 2 hives .think i will suffer for awhile before i bite on that piece of equip. thanks for all your help brother .God bless
jerry prewett You can get by with a hand crank two frame extractor for a while. Think of it as a cardio workout that results in honey. LOL
628DirtRooster thanks i will do that .i need that workout anyway.hahaha
***** done in one but when the honey flow is done everybody at once wants them
I'm guessing that the green paint on the queen is an indicator?
Color indicates year born
what year were the green colored queens born then?
2014
how many different colors do you have, or is there too many to count?
five or six colors. Look up "queen colors by year".
I don't know anything about this so sorry if this is stupid. What do you do about larva and eggs before extracting the honey?
There is a kind of a screen that is between the brood box and the honey super (box) that the worker bees can pass through but the queen can't. That keeps her from laying eggs in the honey super.
Ah cool! Are there special boxes for larva or do they just stay in the box to hatch?
Ironside451 They stay in the boxes. Most people use the deep boxes for brood (larvae) and typically stack them two high. Then a medium (honey super) goes on top above a queen excluder.
ok cool
628DirtRooster Sorry to keep bothering you, but what are your thoughts on products like the Flow hive?
/watch?v=WbMV9qYIXqM
have you ever used a heated knife to uncap then spin?
Yep, we have two.
What road were you on at the beginning?
MS Highway 49
Ah. Thought it was I-10 there for a minute lol
Close
What is that hive tool called with the clamp?
Or was it just a frame clamp?
Called a frame grip.
+628DirtRooster thank you
I got my zero turn a few months ago. I love it
My dad just got a new Scag.
Were do you get your royal gelly
Austin Parish I don't think he harvesters any

I have an old rear steer, front deck 60" Gravely. Runs like a top.

what's a queen cell?
Bees develop inside individual cells. The queens are the only ones that are developed in vertical cells.

What is that a paint roller

628DirtRooster 😳
Every man should have a zero turn mower
+TheUofAfan I agree.
I have a walk behind 32. does that count?
jesus escobar Close enough. :)
+628DirtRooster hell yeah!
I have 120 7 frames flow honey our hives I don't have to lift heavy box and doing uncapping , extracting and replace on hive .
I hope they all work out well for you.
Forest Gump cut his grass and everyone else's. He wasn't too short of a penny 😂😂
looks like the same guy on the zero turn lawn mower lol!
I would laugh if there was a bee in the extractor just absolutely shifting itself
Well go find some clean drawers then because they do get in there.
Aww you done stole Mr Eds boxes. Lol
Got to get the nice stuff when I can.

Remove the legs from the extractor. Lower center of gravity+one large contact point= very stable
They you have to pick it up to drain it.
Does anybody make a diesel zero turn? Mmmmm.
If they don't they should.
I extracted fourteen frames yesterday, and got pretty much thirty nine and a half pounds of honey!
Kenneth Christison Not bad. You keeping it or selling? Around here honey is in short supply this year.
Right now I'm giving it away to people I know. I might look into selling it at the farmers market. I think it'll depend on how much I get in the fall. I also want to keep some for myself of course.
Kenneth Christison Yeah, we use ours as gifts or to trade.
Honey is my favorite just wish it was not so expensive
It's gold
Looked like a smith and Wesson Sigma series.
Your good at this
Thanks for watching

can I buy your honey online?
Maybe next season. Still working that out.
+628DirtRooster definitely. should id buy
Where's JJ and Thelma?
They couldn't make it.
Need to add a little weight to that bad boy, it was almost jumpin all over spinnin the frames.
I personally added 1/6 of a ton to it. LOL

Have you seen the "Flow Hive" no need for all this just turn a tap plug in your hose and the honey just flows out from the hive.
+ZeroG Xo Ha! You still have to manage your hives. Getting the honey is just a small part of beekeeping.
Haha,I know what you mean about rich folk logic. Man,second video I seen today with an electric extractor rolling and bucking like an unbalanced washing machine. Ever figure out how to fix it?
Got to bolt them to the floor.
i love bees and wax, but don't like honey.
