    I'm obsessed with Yamaha SGs, they're my favorite guitars of all time. I have one and I can attest to its status as a Les Paul killer. I never went back to mine after I played it. Beautiful, well-crafted guitars, amazing for doom/stoner metal and pretty much anything else too. They'll break your back but they sound incredible. They can be a bit hard to find in the States sometimes but there's plenty of them on the used market over in Japan. Let's hear a demo!

    The Yamaha Sg 2000 is a fantastic guitar. I played one for several years, I purchased it because Carlos Santana was playing one at the time and he was one of my heroes.
    another guitar I had that's a little more obscure was a Hagstrom Swede, it looked similar to a Les Paul, it had an attractive wood grain finish, and the quality was honestly pretty decent.

      @DoesItDoom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man I ended up taking the option to return the Yamaha. The finish blushing was just really bad. I felt like it sounded great and played well. Lots of sustain. Neck was a bit thin for my liking-my Lola has a ‘59 LP style carve.

      @Belford5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DoesItDoom Allright, yes that makes sense, a pity though! Clouding of the finish seems to be relatively common issue with these vintage SG's. I also agree with the neck being surprisingly slim, especially considering the weight. I also have the more modern take on this model, SG1820, which has a thicker neck - I guess it's a medium C shape or something similar.

    Why they pickups change .those old Yamahas are like gold. Stick to stock when you can ..it would only increase in value ..anyway good find .I have known these and the 3000 are def beast heavy great instruments since the 80s..glad to see that people dig em too.

    It says SG and looks the part but the tone of all three series is pure les Paul. I heard no SG when playing several of them. Sooo...do you prefer your vintage OR head or your Matamp? Really curious

    No demo? I love the sound of these guitars. Im not super experienced, why have you decided to switch out the pickups from the originals?

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pickup in the bridge was already unoriginal. Unfortunately due to all the finish issues I decided to return this one, but it really played and sounded great.

      I ended up returning it. The finish was just kinda gross and overall I much preferred my first act DC-6 guitars in terms of size, shape, and neck profile.

  • @garyhill2740

    SG2000 looks like a nice one. Too bad one of the original pickups is missing. I doubt whatever they (some previous owner) put in is better than what it came with.
    The original pups were very well reviewed back in the day.
    You won't get the full vintage Yamaha SG effect without both of the original open pole high output low impedance and low noise Alnico V's.
    Some people think as soon as they buy a guitar they have to start pickup swapping. Kind of like buying a new car with a great engine and immediately swapping the motor.
    Same as swapping out the Burst Buckers on a Gibson....why?
    The pickups were designed to give the guitar a particular flavor. If they are good you can use them for most things, and anything they can't do can be modified with the amp (or effects pedals etc), even some modeling if you want to go that far. So why start hacking away....especially on a high end and/or/vintage and or/classic guitar?
    Kind of ignorant, honestly.
    (I understand on low budget guitars that have very poorly made pickups. Just not on higher end models that come with very good ones.)

    yeah these old Yamahas are truly cost effective monster, aside from these weird finish anomaly which just looks ugly at times.....I tried out some SG1000 (set neck and with no sustain block, etc....) which was around 900 dollar range in Japan and man, it felt AMAZING

      @@DoesItDoom for older 70s-80s Yamaha, it's apparently common occurrence, its not just SG, ive seen one on some Yamaha ES335-type guitar (I forgot the model name, I think a guy from a post rock band God is an Astronaut used one, his didnt have the blemish tho)

      @@TheZooropaBaby Maybe a Yamaha SA2200 or SA1200? And yes the blooming/clouding of the finish appears to be typical to these instruments from the 70's.

    Given my damaged spine and knee, I can't handle heavy guitars for extended periods, even if they look as gorgeous as this
    But I'd say some kind of SG Custom with the 3 pickup setup (be it Epiphone or Gibson) is on my radar for a potential buy, in the future
