  • Movies, TV shows, games, and books that depict a hellish future of either pure totalitarianism or total anarchy have always sold well. What is it about these stories that make them so popular? Why do we love to explore these pessimistic ideas in fiction? More importantly, what is their relationship to real life?

    I think a lot of people like the apocalypse end of world movies because they like the idea of a world with no 9-5 and weekend off and asking permission for almost everything we do in life. Can I drive a car? Can I catch a fish? Can I shoot a deer? Can I own a gun? Can I conceal carry my gun? Can I build a fence on my property? Can I put a pool on my property? I think that’s why a lot of people like those movies.

    I've always liked dystopian/post-apoc movies but only started reading that type of fiction (post-apoc really) about ten years ago.
    But my favorite SHTF/post-apoc book series is the Commune series by Joshua Gayou, particularly the first 4 books. There's a lot of rather poorly written slop in this genre (I mean I could've done a better job editing grammar/spelling for some of these books I've read when I was in fifth grade) but this is pretty well written series. I've read it all multiple times and really think it's quite good.
    I'll also recommend: Going Home by A. American, Borrowed World series by Franklin Horton (and its related serieses), the first 3 books in the One Second After series by William Forstchen. I also liked the Survivalist series by Arthur Bradley though that one's more "fictiony" than the others I listed. I've read dozens more but those are the ones that stick out the most.

    You see parallels between today's world and whatever( 1984, The Bible, The Hunger Games, Handmaid's Tale etc) both because you now know to look for them and you identify with some admirable character. Read and watch with skepticism, research backgrounds and previous works(Levin for example), be aware you're rewiring your brain.

    Excellent. But yes, I have to be that guy to point out, that Anarchy doesn’t mean no rules, it means _no rulers_. That’s an incredible difference, and no, it’s not semantics. Leadership by consent is just, as just as it is to end it instantly at will. Consent is key, to much of morality. Post Apaco is my Taco. Good stuff.

    • @isaacbotkintrex
      @isaacbotkintrex 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      But people can just not consent to the rules... So there's no rules. Or, people don't let other people not consent to the rules... so there are rulers. Those are the only two options.

      Without rulers there are no rules.
      As soon as one consents to rules they consent to someone enforcing those rules, creating a ruler.

    • @JeremyYounger
      @JeremyYounger 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@isaacbotkintrex I encourage you to consider that there are some rules you don't have to consent to, though enforcement organizations won't care for your consent so I understand you are talking about nullum crimen sine lege instead of anarchy as enforced by non-voluntary consent. I get it. It's a parallel, but different ballpark to the latin interpretation vs colloquial idiom that the term anarchy is given.

    • @JeremyYounger
      @JeremyYounger 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz So by example, you don't murder other humans because there are rulers who would enforce a punishment for doing so. I think there are moral reasons for not doing so, though more nuanced than my one line response to your echoed one line from philosophers millennia ago asking what came first, rules, or rulers. Socrates said that very sentence you used, lest we "are animals." It hurts my face smiling so big thinking about how he is rolling in his grave, having been forced to kill himself by drinking poison, not consenting to the rules,of rulers he didn't consent to.

Having lived through multiple bad hurricanes I can 100% confirm that if you see people who are not from your area showing up they are hostile and there to steal your stuff.
