- The adventure continues as I investigate another one of my favourite Final Fantasy titles to find out if I can complete the game by only using the attack command, and no Junctioning! ► Early access for future episodes & more on Patreon: goo.gl/xvvDJD ► Instagram/Twitter @dansg08 ► Playlist: bit.ly/FFVIIIA...
I had no idea what to expect as always, and for me at least venturing into the unknown is one of the biggest appeals when it comes to challenges, it's why this channel exists in the 1st place ;)
The series will be similar in approach to FFX Auto Battle, with a voiceover style as opposed to real-time commentary, tighter editing to remove much of the excess and fortnightly episodes to give the series more structure and provide something for people to look forward to.
Whether you are going to wait for each episode or binge it all afterwards, I appreciate you taking the time to check this mini series out!

The turn order weirdness is not caused by the game mechanics itself, but by the enemy AI scripts. Most of the enemies in the game have a chance to skip a turn when their ATB is full. The chance varies from enemy to enemy, but typically it's either 1/3 or 1/4.
That's very interesting I always wondered this when playing this game too.
In-universe, maybe the reason why Rinoa is so strong is because she isn't entirely human.
Exactly my thoughts, she is a Sorceress after all, all checks out
I need this to be uploaded more than once every every couple of weeks lol😢
Squall can always hit when inflicted with Darkness, it's actually a handy status to increase his crisis level for Renzo. ( Along with other ones like silence etc)
Selphie's ultimate weapon also has perfrct accuracy.
I've always understood it in terms of the gun blade doing a boom even if the blade would miss
Brother is going to be impossible under these restrictions. Even with junctionning the battle is pretty rough, so without it its probably impossible.
Thankfully Brother is optional
I'm curious if Squall is Level 100, but the other two are level 10, Brothers level would be 47. Would that be a big enough gap for Squall to take the win? Or maybe Squall level 60, they would be level 27.
Ugh, I hated that tomb bit as a kid. I always got lost in there cos all the passages look the same :(
Additional to all the great things about Rinoa, she got her dog. There are Angel commands, that can trigger randomly in fight. She can attack and even revive a team member.
I did the challenge last summer but with junction and Diabolos was so hard. I did him with Squall, Zell and Rinoa. And Rinoa and her doggy where the heros. Angel did good damage and she even revived Squall one time.
You did a great job! I never thought only attack without junction would work as good.
Angelo best doggo
Most enemies in FF8 have a chance to skip their turn, that's why the rate at which they attack feels very inconsistent. They do have an ATB timer, which charges at a consistent rate just like the party's, but whether or not they will use their turn to perform an action or do nothing is decided by RNG, and in either case the ATB goes back to zero and has to charge up again. No idea why the game is programmed that way, though.
The reason for Rinoa to have such high stats is because of her leaving the party for a good part of the game, so that she does not fall behind everyone else.
For the challenge itself, I really wonder how far you'll be able to go. I tried this kind of auto-attack challenge, but with junctioning, and some fights were very surprising. Not gonna spoil how the run fared :)
In part one, you mentionned something about Weapons in FFVII. It theoretically can be done (Ruby, at least), by insane of AP grinding on Movers, by countering with a strings of KotR/Mime and HPMP. You just have to lucky about getting hits tentacles instead of Ruby itself, as you need two rounds of counters. The only change of your terms would be to allow lvl1 limit breaks (since they replace the attack command) as they're the only actions I found that can kill ennemies in chocobo fights without it running away
Dispel removes Slow in FF6, so it's definitely a thing in at least one game.
Gods I forgot about Lagunas theme heck yeah instant hype
The Man with the Machine Gun is one of the best FF battle themes ever made. It's such a vibe
The fighting system was always so nerve wrecking for me as I was not able to predict anything. So I was relieved when FFX came out (and shocked again when FFX-2 came).
On the topic of the ATB mechanics discussed in the middle of the vid: according to /v/ on 4chan, the most likely reason is that FF8 has unique quirks to its battle system, specifically the ATB system. Basically, the blokes on there have theorized that whenever you confirm a targeted attack on an enemy, that enemy gets a debuff to its ATB. I think the idea is that when you target something and press X or whatever, almost ALWAYS you will get that attack off before that enemy will be able to do anything. This is drastically different to say, FF9, where you will hopelessly waste many Elixirs on a dying party member because the enemy got to go before it went off.
It's why there are a few vids on youtube talking about beating Omega Weapon with the "potion" trick, where they spam potions on it. In reality, it could be ANY item or any action that targets Omega; these will delay the enemy's ATB, giving the player a better chance of getting their turns off. It's a pretty sweet mechanic, if a bit overpowered for the player. I guess since 99.9% of people don't know about it, it's one of those "don't know don't hurt" things.
Love FF8. simple as
Wow that's really interesting. It seems like something they might have added it to fix some bug.
On a side note, "FF8 has unique quirks to its battle system" is the understatement of the century LOL. It's pretty crazy how many experimental features FF8 has and they all combine to make it insanely broken. Even having a boss THIS complicated that early in the game is wild (how many FFs do you see berserk, curse, silence, or even darkness on the 4th boss)? I wonder when they decided they would make it so experimental? When did they realize it was broken? What were their attempts to fix it? I know this is the first one that Sakaguchi really let Kitase and the team free to do what they wanted without any input.
@@Paul-to1nb They probably assumed that some players wouldn't invest a huge amount of time in the junction system and would skip straight to the action, this would make the game harder (Adel was an infamous boss back in the day where you could be in real trouble if you hadn't been focusing on junctions) but by contrast if you took the time to explore all the variety of options you'd find your own fun ways to break the game and make it extremely easy. About a year ago i junctioned 100 zombie status effects to my attack and then got Rinoa to cast Curaga on everything. I just find it fun when you discover new ways to wreck everything. But yeah, this is an extremely breakable game.
@@BOSIE321 It being so broken makes it a lot more fun, at least for repeated playthroughs. There's so many options and restrictions you can place on yourself.
I understand the bosses skip turns, or at least that's what I saw suggested in a set of challenge videos. Was that debunked?
If you make it to disc 4, it woll be impossible to complete without junctioning some healing ability
Fun fact: "renzoku-ken" translates from Japanese as something like "continuous sword" which is very apt :) Also everyone shortening it to "renzo" just makes it similar to shortening the English equivalent to "continu"
I'm loving it so far
Since we have a status heavy boss here it’s a good time to mention that Squall isn’t effected by darkness at least not in the traditional sense. His attacks will still always connect even when under darkness however his R Critical will not work. But being under status increases the likelihood and power of limit breaks which means in a run allowing limit breaks it’s actually beneficial for Squall to be blinded. Same deal for Selphie with Mute.
It seems like, just based on the observations here, that the bosses which are optional are more likely to be out of reach for this kind of challenge. They are designed to utilize the mechanics of the junctioning/drawing system more than the regular story bosses which are set to be 'beatable' even if the player does not want to delve deeply.
Diabolos, for example, seems ot have his HP set so that the player feels a lot more obligated to use the draw for Gravity magic to quickly cut the high number down to more manageable amounts. The Brothers, if I remember correctly, are affected by the 'float' spell. Get them off the ground, they lose their regen and I think some of their damage too. Not sure on the last part though.
I suspect you'll run into similar situations as you progress, were the story fights remain doable until the late game, but any bosses that are not required will have gimmicks that make them impossible to just level through.
I'm absolutely loving this FF8 attack only series
Honestly, I thought boss enemies just occasionally skipped their turns - like if a enemy has 3 attacks, it randomizes between them and also a blank move. I remember reading about that on the gamefaqs forums way back in the day (I think) but I have no idea if it's actually true or just an old wives tale I have stuck in my head.
Haven't finished the video yet, but honestly I'd be interested in there being an alternate timeline alongside these videos referred to from time to time. Like if in the battle AI, there is a CHANCE that that he continously uses gravity magic, then technically yes you can beat Diablo with attack only. Even if it's essentially impossible it's still cool knowing that you fundamentally could do it, if the stars align. It would be fun to see what is theoretically possible vs what is realistically possible.
Obviously another set of videos would be too much, but maybe you could mention it, when it comes up.
By not junctioning, ypu have broken this games story.
They cant remember each other because of their use of GFs
Whats a GF, ive a gunblade bro.
I'm intrigued on how hard you get I think Odin/ sypher disc 3 will you get you but I'm not sure. I do wish you would junction atleast elements and status
Wait 1000 xp per lvl. I played this game for years, and i never knew that. Thanks 🎉
Knew? You can see it. After every battle, you see the XP counter go down to 0, you level up, then the counter continues down from 999.
@@Yakushii Pretty understandable you not even look at the after-battle screen for the whole game
The 1000 xp per level is constant, but xp also scales by level, so you will be getting less xp as your level increases.
I think tht attack only would probably be impossible at some point while allowing junctioning would be too easy. Maybe allowing junctioning of GFs to only have abilities would be a good idea. So Berk will still be allowed stuff like Auto abilities or like stat boosts such as str +40% would be interesting. It could really make use of some abilities that we normally would not even consider using, such as Cover, Counter, Med data and auto potions
Yeah, I really think this is the best method. And it opens up so many interesting choices that you normally never even consider.
I just did a run of no draw and no magic with one junctioned GF per character and it is very tough at certain points. Elemental and status junctions are important and can be used as cures on the team but they have drawbacks. VIII is a game where you can play around with a lot of ideas when it comes to challenges.
I feel like junctioning to Elemental and Status attack will be a big part of making "Attack Only" actually interesting long term, but we'll see.
Just junctions but attack-only still would be rather limiting as you still wouldn't get the other GF and also hardly gain any magic for long stretches of the game (outside of wasting docents of hours to get some Vita from drawpoints). But it would make the later bosses beatable without having to do too much grinding.
@@ABaumstumpf You can still get a lot of magic though the refining ability. One thing i forgot was how many Breaks you can get from refining Softs, also 100 antidotes = 100 Bios.
I think the fight with squall and Irving against Edea pet thing where the block gonna happen
I did not know that about Rinoa. Maybe they were factoring in what happens to her later in the game with Edea/Adel.
While you can get money early on just by walking around (your seed salary) it is not advisable: You will loose Seed-ranks if you don't fight enough enemies between payments and getting them back up will require you to do just as many battles. And the Quiz is level-limited but that is not much of a problem for challange-runs were you intentionally go higher level.
Also why do you keep mentioning darkness for squall? it would reduce his damage only a bit - not as much as if another character is blinded:
Squall always hits even when blinded. What it does is remove the 50% damage-bonus for the gunblade-trigger. On other characters it removes 75% of their hits. So Squall dealing 63dmg would drop damage/round by ~21. Selphie was dealing ~36 which would be a loss of 27/round, and Squall getting slow is basically the WORST with halfing his speed and thus damage.
I think you will find that all three party members can do critical damage with R1. Im loving this series already!
Might be possible to beat Diablos via using items like Str up etc
A lot of things are possible if you have different rules
Something you forgot to take into account with ATB is that you simply will never 1:1 with an enemy.
Even in Wait mode most ATB games only pause when you are selecting a Target, Spell, or Item. This means even the time it takes selecting Attack means you're looking at a delay based on human reaction time or at least a few frames.
Every so often 2 characters will get their turn at about the same time, meaning you actually attack slower as Character 2 is losing the time spent on Character 1. This is why I prefer Wait mode in general because ATB systems actively punish the player so using Wait lets you mitigate the impact of this.
It still has an impact though and comes with a catch that there is a max speed you want as past that it will be wasted as you give commands to Character 1.
So torn between watching the video or not: Kinda want to play the game again and trying to forget as much of the story as i can. I checked steam and funnily enough while i have finished Omega last year i apparently have never played the steam-version before. Got both of them but the version i have installed is still my original PC version cause that is the one that was best for modding for the longest time.
Man i wish Square would have given the game a real re-master as it deserved or finally gives it a good remake (but absolutely NOT like they butchered 7).
I love this
This has been done at least once before, but it was an insane amount of grinding and time. 2019 I think had a reddit post about it.
I really interested where this goes. It is very doable with Limits but attack only with levelling thrown in.. gonna be interesting where this ends!
Solo ramza squire only challenge FFTactics
I have played this game dozens of times. I legitimately never new the SeeD exams existed.
Thank you for doing the fight at the end. Was hoping you would the minute you entered the dungeon. Lol 😆
I never noticed wendigo looked so strange before but now I can't unsee a squinty crab face.
apparently gerogero in japanese means disgusting lmao
This actually inspired me to do my own run of ‘no draw, no magic, no items in battle and one junctioned GF per character (junction only, can’t summon). I allowed myself limit breaks because I couldn’t use revive or cure and there was always that difficulty where the character was only an attack away from being KO’d. I got all the way to Ultimecia but couldn’t beat her. I will say though it proved to me that, apart from occasionally drawing GFs, you really don’t have to draw Magic in this game if you don’t want to. The GF refine ability is extremely flexible and items and Mug are the way to go.
If you optimize properly, Ultimecia should be doable, especially abusing zell's limit break, but even without that, Cactuar has all of the bonus skills so you can power level at least one character at a time. Fighting relatively weak enemies would be slow, but can easily get you to max stats. Stuff like revive and treatment are also good and auto-haste is disgustingly good. Since you can use amnesia greens to remove useless skills from a GF, you can make a single GF give all the relevant useful junctions.
Even if you don't want to fully optimize every GF, just using cactuar to raise base stats makes the late game a lot more doable.
How about showing us the amount of HP the boss left on your failed attempts? I'm always curious how close you was.
This challenge is very interesting.
yo this challenge series is sick!
10:40 like beating Shinryu in nsg?
What a tough challenge
It's pronounced gehr og ero
👍
I'm curious as to why you grinded to beat the boss given that enemy levels in the game scale along with your characters' levels? Wouldn't that also increase the boss's level? I'm not well versed in FF8 mechanics though, so I could be missing something.
Generally that's true, but it turns out bosses have level caps. So if you overlevel them enough, the bosses stop levelling. He does show the ranges in the video. This was needed for Elvoret, and it's very interesting tech.
@@patsen29 Ah cool. I commented halfway through the video, so if that info's towards the end I'd have missed it. My bad.
@@pamelaglickman1216 He went over it in the first video, as to why he level grinded for Elvoret. And he mentions the level ranges for bosses, just without much context anymore. But given Brothers caps at 75, it's likely already passed the limit of being helpful, because enemy stat growth is so much higher than yours without junctioning.
I feel like you could turn this episode into a drinking game. Everytime he says “RNG” take a shot.
You’ll be dead before half the video is over lol
The Squall Limit break is his attack by the way... its not Unfair to use it i guess ...
I say keep calling it renzo. We all know what you mean and it’s all good! Keep up the challenge content. Love it (as long as you enjoy it!)!
I kinda feel like u should allow physical damage limit break during boss fights if u cant get past later areas. Id count that as attack only lol
Can you beat ff8 using one of the most powerful methods of dealing damage to enemies?
So at 2 bosses per episode, this series will be 80 videos long? Skipping through most of it does not do you any favor.
Basically basically basically basically basically, you say basically too much. Work on it. Basically.
Doesn't he automatically fail the challenge, because he has to use the Run command to escape XATM092?
He said he allows running from encounters
Plus technically speaking fleeing isn't a command in FF8
