After almost 2 years, we are finally back in the Final Fantasy franchise with my first ever FFX run. This was a game I wanted to do in forever but finding something that hasn't been done before was pretty hard.
There will be another Final Fantasy challenge coming up the next few months so stay tuned for those. Of course there will also be more SMT/Persona runs and probably also some LAD runs once I played through the upcoming part casually!

I appreciate your aversion to grinding to solve all problems. Many challenge runs grind to overcome a hurdle and end up trivializing a chunk / the rest of the run.
Ugh, I still have nightmares of the Seymour fight on Mt. Gagazet from my first ever playthrough of FFX, I remember having to resort to chessing him with Aeons to make sure i could survive Total Annhilation since only Auron could take the hit and survive (I was young and stubborn and didn't grind beforehand).
This was a fun video to watch.

ive always found the sand worms giving shadow gems fun. like how do you beat sand worms? use shadow gems! oh well how do you get them? steal them from sand worms!
it would have also been cool to see just how far in the game you could go with the post-game stuff as well like omega ruins/ arena/ dark aeons and such

Nothing feels better in FFX than winning that first blitzball match during a playthrough. :D
when I played this when I was 11 or so I didn't know how the sphere grid worked, I just thought the levels meant I was getting stronger, I think I accidentally level 1'd the game until sin met the al bhed

Next ffx challenge: can you beat the game only using Lancet.
Maybe consider a "Game Over" counter? And a "Boss Kill First Try" counter.
This game is so different from the ones released recently, it doesn't even look like the same franchise. The word "fantasy" really stands out to me in these older titles compared to the modern ones.
I just finished playing IX and I absolutely loved it, although the graphics are very outdated, the art direction is just superb. I'm excited to move on to X, which is also excellent in that regard.
I understand why Square Enix moved on from turn based battles but I don't understand why they don't do this type of art direction and story anymore. It was superior than anything that came later imo
After the ps2, the creative people behind Final Fantasy for that Era left. Unfortunately, most of them didn't have super success at their more personal projects. Lost Odyssey, which is stuck on the 360, is probably the last game with the same design philosophy as FFX.
The challenge is hard until we get Rikku, and thus a discount version of the Item command, back
The answer is NO. If you keep adding exceptions to the rule any type of run can be done becauae you"ll just add an exception once you reach an obstacle.
I really love how FFX encourages you to use status effects
I was wondering how you would get enough damage to win the race against Sin. Shining gems in the Omega Ruins did not occur to me. GG.
Huh, I did a much softer versions of this, what could be boiled down to 'ability sphere commands only', i.e. magic is allowed, as are skill abilities and of course special. I managed to get to Seymore Flux but just could eek out the damage before he killed me and kinda petered out (as I often do with challenge runs). Haven't watched this video, will be very interesting to see.
If someone doesn't love FFX, immediately remove them from your life. They are your enemy.

I'll be honest, in the first fight against Seymour, I'm surprised that you didn't use ice elemental throwing items against Anima, as it's weak to ice.
I hate Kilika's easily missable Megaelixir.
Honestly, while it may have made some of the early grind a bit longer, I feel like going for cheer with Tidus at the beggining, before going for the magic would've probably made later grind less necessary, as you would have a better bulk to survive stuff
I totally understand why not but it would have been funny if you had started doublecasting flare on a technicality. Or Quick Pockets to use items, as a handful of phoenix downs would have come in clutch… despite that being a special I didn’t even know existed until I checked the wiki to confirm what you had to work with.
Hmm, could you have not gotten cheer for tidus at the start to help buff wakka out on the tough first sin fight ?

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks the Aurochs aren’t actually all that terrible, though I do think Keepa’s alright too once you get him some experience (though Datto’s pretty crap). Jassu and Botta are pretty serviceable as defenders, as you said, and Letty as the midfielder is pretty good, actually.
I usually replace Letty with Brother and he basically solos every blitzball game 😂
Everyone else just plays support for him
@@jbz4788 Tidus is usually my solo player, though with some pretty good top scorer rewards early on, I tend to at least try to build up my other forward.
In my most recent run, I did both experience and acquire just how cracked Brother is, but by the time I got him, I was winding down blitzball as the Jupiter Sigil got closer. I do find it somewhat fun, but once you have that sigil, there’s no reason to play any more on that file.

Can't you get another special sphere from the Al Bhed home? Might have been handy to have another character learn use for items?
Also you could heal through zmobie if you had eater armors, you could then throw the corresponding element at them.
Special spheres don't really have any use considering characters are only allowed to learn 'their' special abilities anyways but yeah if it wasn't for that, they'd have a use.

Aaand yep, that's pretty much how it went. Could have just thrown a Candle of Life at Yu Yevon and let Doom handle it way faster tho.
Yeah I agree. Credit when credit is due tho, the idea was interesting. I genuinely interested in the Special only run. But then Rikku appeared and it hit me....
Still, if possible, I'd appreaciate if Ragna try this without Steal/Use (or maybe at least ban some portion of it? Like since Spare Change can deal 9999 dmg, u can ban dmg items for example). Otherwise, after getting Rikku u can NSG the game.
Still this is not to disminish Ragna's idea. This is an interesting vid. Cheers.

I wonder how many challenge runs are pretty much just "Rikku hours"
Side question though, are the things Kimari can learn like a blue mage not classes as abilities? Or are they put under magic/skill?
You answered your own question 😂 blue mage = magic
Wait, you didn't try to learn Special abilities via Lancet, or am I forgetting something?
Only Kimahri can learn Enemy Skills from Lancet which is a Limit Break, which sadly he cannot use during this challenge.

So... every time I see the sphere grid, I see you're not using Wakka's Dark Attack, Sleep Attack, etc... I take it that's because you're counting them as Special Attacks??
Hose are in the “skills” subcategory not special so would be off limits

Why can you use items like poison fangs, but not phoenix downs?
Poison Fangs (or other items used in this run) can only be used by the special ability 'Use' so they're allowed unlike Phoenix Downs, which are under Items and therefore not allowed

In the Advanced Sphere Grid, everyone starts very close to Lancet, which can make Lulu and Yuna much easier to use early game, and maintain their MP late game.
My Lancet does 1332 damage with kimahri and im max stats with all most all the celestial full Power in final fantasy 10

Enjoy watching your runs though when saw this one was worried it was a "fake run" like ive seen a couple of. Basically its "can you do game only using X" and then modding the game slightly to allow doing it. to me if you have to change the game files to do a run its cheating or fake. I'm fine when exceptions like the game start on X not having special skills and then keeping to the rules when its avilable thou.

If you can only use special abilities then you cant use items. Challenge lost before it even started.

If you want to change up your content a bit you could see if you could beat Final Fantasy Tactics with only using the in-game AI for all the units. You can use rules like, "No Math," if you like
No, you can't, Tidus has not skills that deal damage and you start the game fighting with him. There, solved.
