I had no idea what to expect as always, and for me at least venturing into the unknown is one of the biggest appeals when it comes to challenges, it's why this channel exists in the 1st place ;)
The series will be similar in approach to FFX Auto Battle, with a voiceover style as opposed to real-time commentary, tighter editing to remove much of the excess and fortnightly episodes to give the series more structure and provide something for people to look forward to.

you should at least be allowed to use the draw command you will never beable to get good stats if you dont draw.
This is the game that got me into the franchise. I understand its flaws all these years later, but I'm just too biased towards this game to care x3

Same my dude !! This was my introduction to ff wag back when i used to watch my dad play it and i was fascinated as a child by the music and thematic aspects of the game . Also gunblades were cool af !! This was the golden age of square and imve never looked back since ❤
FF7 was my first entry to the franchise, and FF8 is still my favourite one 😂

FFVIII still has the best opening scene out of any game I've ever seen or played. I am very, very overdue for a replay of the game, but for now I'll be happy to follow your Attack-Only journey here.

Fascinating! Did not know about the variability of the boss scaling! Tempted to try a run now.
Be careful with saving anywhere. I remember way back when doing that on the PlayStation version and got locked saving and quitting in some room on Disc 3. Something that was just part of the story parts.
The best tips I can provide as a long time FF8 player, put Battle speed on slow, upgrade weapons, look for stat boost items, esp STR +1, and see which battles you can run from as there are some random ones

You could get one party member at a much higher level so the average level is lower for the enemies. You can level squall in the training centre before the first mission.
Yeah this is the trick. I did this long ago and it completely breaks the game.
Good way to get higher level items as well.
Just recently started my ongoing FF7 challenge run -added to my channel for posterity's sake- Each character has a certain job and I am trying to stick to that formula. I never realized how easy the game is to get through by just attacking and barely having to heal that that often. I still have the other two of these videos to watch so I'm excited to see where it leads.
thank you for this one. final fantasy 8 is my all time fave final fantasy. honestly im not so sure this is even possible but i will watch to see if its the case. it may even take having to farm the stat upgrades to max out a few stats like hp and strength.

Personally, I think you're making this harder than it needs to be by not junctioning, it's a key gameplay aspect, like Customisation in X, it doesn't break the only use Attack rule, and there are ways to get magic without drawing in combat (though you'd have to play the card game Triple Triad a lot :P).
Already it looks tedious in the Fire Cavern, I wager you'll resort to Junctioning before part 2 is over :P.
The thing is that Cards are kind of what makes Junctioning so bonkers strong, I wonder if you could find a middle ground that allows for Junctions but doesn't involve abusing the system? Like allowing for GF ability Junctions like Str+20% and such, while limiting magic Junctions, maybe?

Well considering Attack only is the ideal way to play this game I would say the answer is yes.

I could immediately tell Elvoret is going to be a problem since I unintentionally tried this challenge as a kid when this game came out. I couldn't play it when we first got it, so my brother and his friend had the first go at it. Due to language issues or just impatience (skipping tutorials), they completely skipped the junction system. So, when I finally got to play the game the save file was at, you guessed it, just before Elvoret. I had no idea a junction system even existed and thought I just wasn't high enough level to access other commands. Never got past it until a year or so later I restarted the game from the beginning.

I'm starting to watch this now. Very fascinating. Just finished watching your FF7 run. Great job! I have to admit, that I already thought it's impossible with 7, well it kinda was - I thought no way he's gonna get past the first scorpion boss if he just keeps spamming attack when the tail is up, but then you said that waiting is allowed, so it continued.
But 8 seems even more unlikely because it's so balanced on GF usage. Haven't played this for many years but I think the starter GFs already deal like 600-800hp damage at this point, so the first boss is no big deal usually.
Anyway it's very entertaining to see you struggle through this haha. This is where Dark Souls really begins.
I've beaten every FF game and this is my favourite but this is one game that gives you so many options to break it that a challenge run might be easy, aside from no junction which is almost impossible. If you junction but prohibit drawing and using magic then you can easily make up the magic deficit by refining items or playing the card game which means you never had to draw much anyway. Other ideas i have such as only one GF junction per character, could be interesting but again the game is so flexible that there are ways around it. Looking forward to seeing how Berk does.
No mid-battle drawing might not seem like a drawback at first, until you remember that there's multiple GFs that can *only* be obtained by drawing. Siren being the earliest notable example because she's how you refine healing magic from items, which means you'll have significantly lower max HP for your party members without her.
@@TARDISES Yeah i think i counted that there are 16 official junctioning GFs and I think 8 can be obtained only via drawing. I'm actually doing a 'no draw' run now and i can potentially get 80 firagas already through fire refining after the battle in the training centre after meeting Ellone there. It's insane how you can get such powerful magic so early in this game if you know what to do.
Funnily enough, my first run of ff8, my first final fantasy, started out as attack only. Purely because I didn't speak enough english and I was too young to really understand that the tutorial that showed me how to junction didn't actually junction my stuff for me. I got up to dollet just by pure luck but elvoret just massacred me. Still very fond of this game.
Love your content! Haven't watched all of it yet, but I think you should give yourself a little leg up, and allow auto-triggers of your gunblade in the config, so you can get the extra damage while keeping the speed up function. I don't think it takes anything away from the challenge, and I'm sure will keep your sanity a bit.
4:01 Because of the level scaling fact, you actually can really breeze through the game, if you stay on the starting level.
Also fun fact Squall has perfect accuracy on his regular attack.
Looking forward to more. If the goal is to get as far as possible without junctions, my guess is you'll max it out by doing asymmetrical levelling. Power level just Squall (and maybe one other character) and use the rest as meat shields. No idea if the math will let you get significantly farther, but it'll keep the averages down and maximum damage high.
It is possible to beat the X-ATM thing in Dollet. I’ve done it. You don’t get the cool cut seen where Quistis comes in with the Gatling gun, and she still gets demoted. So, it’s best to not try to beat it.
I won't rest until I see an attack only with every FF game. Not mainline games, EVERY game.
Not sure if anyone will see this, but I am now trying this run on my switch. I had Seifer grind to the 30s until I got dragon skins off the anacondours. I probably could've went to 100 and gotten a fury fragment but I got lazy. My winning battle against elvoret was Zell at 17, squall at 7, and selphie at 8 i also used scan (technically had to junction but i think this doesnt break the rules?) To make sure the Elvoret i found was level 8. It ended with Zell at 12 health lol.
I can see Mad Rush being a solid game-changer for later parts when you'll need the edge but still maintain the attack only rule. I've thoroughly enjoyed the attack only series so far, and I'm sure this one will be a blast as well. Massive kudos. ;)
But Mad Rush would break the rule of using only attack command, no? as Mad Rush is a separate ability that has to be junctioned.

You're running your head into a wall until you RNG your way through, we all know this won't work long. I am surprised you beat Elvoret, so kudos, but either you start relying on limit breaks (especially The End) or you junction GFs. My rules suggestions:
1. You only use GFs obtained without using draw
2. No draw allowed outside combat.
3. No card mod.
4. No Chocobo World.
5. You may junction magic. I dunno if you can get by without junctioning to Str, but I'd like to see you try.
6. Lastly abilities such as stat +20/40/60% etc. I think should be allowed but if you try to go without that'd be interesting.

Im currently doing an ALL MAGIC run. Only time I can't will be when I reach Ultimecia Castle for the first miniboss battle, but choose Magic to regain an option.
You can still use junctioned abilities like counter to get around it. That's what I did in my magic only run.
While FF7 is my favorite in the franchise (it was the first one I very played), FF8 is the one that I’ve replayed the most. I really love the story and the characters. 7 will remain my #1, but 8 is a very close 2nd.

5:00 Kind of a coincidence that you happened to be doing this challenge now. I'm about 13 hours into a new game myself and just got to disc 2. And somehow during the entirety of disc 1 I did not know there was a speed booster. That could have come in very handy during the first 3 hours. You think they would make a note on the launch screen or something but it only shows the magic booster thing. I guess disc 2 is about to get crazy. Also I'm looking forward to this series. I loved the FFX auto battle challenge.
Edit after finishing video: I think you're going about it too strict. Not junctioning stats is fine. But you should equip GFs so you can use support abilities like str+20% etc or tool-ref etc. Also using a cheat to see the level and HP of bosses sounds like using the scan spell without wasting a turn on using the scan spell. And just giving yourself exp instead of actually grinding also feels like a bit of a cheat. RNG plays a role in what enemies drop. They might not drop enough potions for your grind to be sustainable. Just my thoughts.
This game is so fucking good lmao. It’s genuinely embarrassing how much people shit on it just because they won’t admit the junction/draw system overwhelms them. They’d rather say it’s a “bad system”… lmfaooo it’s genius. Lovely game. Easily top 5.
My recent run was nearly attack only haha didn’t realise until the endgame I was like ‘I basically only really attack, huh’ only used GF and a little healing magic but otherwise attack attack it’s such a chill game once you can break it
I'm pretty sure no Junction and no Limit is flat out impossible, the "No Junction" challenge needs constant abuse of Limit Breaks to get too far and especially to beat the game. Guess we'll see where this goes, though.

well... the NO juction... would be the same as NO SPHERE GRID AND GEAR on FFX or NO Gear in FF7 ... which is kinda really hard ... however if you think about it... you could do a No Juction but only using on HP or Defense OR immunity something like that... choosing only 1 type of juction for example... because only attack without juction is pain for sure XD

It will be tough doing it without junctions. In this case you specially do not want to level up cause while the characters stats grow a bit, enemies gain new abilities. Bosses also have a very high stat-gain at lower levels but also have a max-level. And then there are some enemies even with fixed level (which i would assume force you to at least go to ~50lvl)
Some bosses go from 10Str at lvl 1 to ~70Str at lvl 30 (about were you will end up if you level a lot) to well over 150Str at lvl 75.

Not really if you listen to how many people just used summon over and over because it was the only way for them to do decent damage.
Ff8 was my favorite and honestly besides somewhat being rushed I believe ff15 was so close to being a modern ff8 as far as how it looked being modern ish appeal am I the only one who thought that?
I'm thinking that Junction in itself won't break the challenge at all, just add a rule "no refining magic", and you're good to go.
Because narurally you can't draw any magics from monsters either (attack only), you should be allowed to junction any magic you happen find, it won't be much anyways.
Could be a nice balancing factor, and also it could motivate to scout a bit extra in some cases, and risk more tough battles.
Man Berk, you got me confused the first time you started talking about using Renzo for Squall, I was like "He's going to allow himself limit breaks? That's lame as hell and totally abusable". 😂 Renzo is the name of Squall's limit break, unrelated to the trigger press for his normal attack and definitely something that Seifer can't do. 😅 BTW, the timing for the trigger on regular attacks is very forgiving, just press it slightly later than you think, half a second after the attack hits. Although I've never played with battles sped up, so I don't know how much that affects the timing.
Anyway, I'm a regular viewer of your FFX content but I'm glad to see a bit of love for FFVIII as it was my first FF back in the day and I put hundreds of hours into it. Sure, everyone knows it's flawed but it was awesome at the time and nostalgia still goes a long way. 😁
I'm sure you'll run into a wall sooner rather than later with the current challenge rules but if you allow regular junctions then I think attack only could become way too easy, so you'll have to consider the restrictions carefully.
It occurred to me that you might have some difficulty obtaining the items you need for upgrading weapons without the use of Mug (requires junctioning a GF, albeit it's a passive ability and still uses the Attack command...kinda) or card modding. Are you allowing yourself to use Chocobo World to gather items? I wouldn't recommend it as it's hugely RNG based and no viewers want to watch that, whilst if you start hacking items into your inventory to 'simulate' using Chocobo World then it defeats the whole point of a challenge.
By the way, you can upgrade a weapon before finding the relevant Weapons Monthly magazine as long as you have acquired the necessary items, and Selphie's ultimate weapon has 255% Hit (i.e. it's guaranteed to hit, like Squall's gunblade), so I'd make it a priority to get it if you can.

As you spoke about the junction system I remembered someone did a no junction challenge which actually meant it was attack only and he did it. So it is possible but I am curious to see what and how you do it. But if you have at a point where you need to use junction I would say doing it on a low level like giving 20 cures to the attack stat to still have it as a challenge
I’m just starting this video and I’m curious how it works out in late game. If I remember correctly, if you do not get the Doomsday GF there’s a boss that will take you an eternity to kill near the end game

Can't say FF8 is one of my favourites personally, but it seems like a good candidate for attack-only.
While I love 8, it is a balancing nightmare. There is almost no way to play the game and get the 'correct' challenge out of it. Once you know how it works, the cat is out of the bag. No Junction Attack Only is 100% impossible. You could try limiting certain tiers of magic, no drawing even in the world map, no weapon upgrading (maybe), no chocobo world, only the 8 gfs you find. Only one GF per character until you get enough to put a second on someone else. Card is banned and you would either have to eliminate card refine. Refining item DROPS only seems fine.

VIII is my all time favorite. It's mechanically bonkers though. Easiest game in the series to completely dismantle and do really weird stuff with. I'm not sure the developers at the time had everything about the progression and combat system figured out when they shipped the game, so it's got some weird quirks.
You should do Final Fantasy Tactics with this challenge, it's a good time.

The Junctioning system makes characters vastly overpowered; I defeated the game back in 1999 or 2000 with using nothing but attack and it was easy. Squall is a powerhouse starting out, and he only grows stronger when you junction strong magic to his attack. The rest of the team can also be raised to ridiculously powerful as well.
The junction system can be used to pretty much break the game and you don’t need to use a single offensive magic spell if you don’t want to.
This is interesting maybe restrict the level of the spell junctioned? Instead of having Fira start off by using weaker spells like Fire until you hit a roadblock

Just at the elvoret fight now and it's occurred to me that the scaling is based off party avg level...so you could have lv100 squall and lv8 zell and selphie if you want to do something truly degenerate.
Attack only sounds very easy on this one. Assuming you use the junctions.
You may have to junction to Str only, Otherwise this is going to be almost impossible 😂.
Also Squall can never miss an attack under darkness as he has perfect accuracy. Selphie can also get this with a weapon upgrade.
Well I know that you can beat the game without Junctioning but that requires a ton of limit break abuse and luck.
Hey. For your ff7 run, if it's attack only but you allow materia, have you considered maxing out 32 counter materias and equipping them to defeat emerald/ruby? every time your party gets it, they counter for every materia equipped. It breaks the game
Yeah, not gonna happen. The missile base tank is going to mess you up.

I think Junction GF but no magic should still be hard but you can get plus percent stats and perm stats on lvl but none of the crazy op Junction

No junctions this will be nigh impossible. Maybe you should do sub par/ almost bad junctions on stats
If you take away junction is like taking away equipment of other games, not only for attack, but gf gives def and Mr , in this game the developers went full on GFS if you don't use them there's no way you can beat the game. First time watching your series but I can very heavily bet that you used equipments on the others ffs.
