Cinderella’s dress has so far been the only dress that had traveled from the realm of animation to live action and not only stayed beautiful but became stunning.
All the other princesses iconic dresses did not fair so well on the journey from animation

Seeing it side by side makes the blue coloring look like someone just ran a brush tool over the footage, details be damned. The blue eats up the butterflies along the neckline, and a lot of the layering of the skirt blends together in a lump.
Almost makes you wonder what else they fiddled with in post that wasn't originally planned.

It's so insane. Even if they wanted to amp up the vibrancy, they could've approached it in a much less sloppy way.

I love the deep blue chosen for the movie. The saturated blue matched the set design and prince’s costume better than the “real” color. In life though, the real color is gorgeous.

Agree that the original color in the animated story was silver, not blue! But sorry, I think the original color of the dress was too light and too subtle to compete with the bright colors of the other ladies at the ball in the live action movie. I do agree that the blue chosen was maybe too strong, you can still see something of the differing colors in the layers of the petticoats and those would have made a stronger impact if the top layer wasn't such an overpowering shade of blue.

I agree. That's the same thing that I thought. The dress was absolutely stunning prior to the digital change. The detail that the designer placed into it became almost completely lost. There were other ways to make the dress stand out from the others in the film take. Now as far as the snow white...YIKES!

I feel like I at one point heard that the reason why Disney keeps making Cinderella's dress more blue rather than trying to return to the more silver roots of the dress, is that the silver version looks a lot like a wedding dress. And modern day Disney isn't really trying to have their princess line scream Bride, even if a number of the Disney Princesses end their stories as brides.
Along with the fact that they want to sell dress up dresses, and the vast majority of parents aren't going to buy their little girls silvery white dresses that they'll inevitably horribly stain in like three days at most, with no innate color of it's own to hide/disguise the staining.
More colorful dresses hide grass stains better than silver/white ones, and they only make fabrics so stain resistant while also being comfortable to wear.

They should've reverted this bad decision when they re-released the movie in 4K. It's the only thing that really bothers me about this movie.
As for Snow White, everything in that movie seems to be a disaster...

  • @Stardust.Creations
    @Stardust.Creations ปีที่แล้ว +37

My issue with this extends to it even being a story problem.
It made sooo much more sense for Ella to have the original lavender-pink duochrome dress before they edited it, because Ella made it clear she did not want her mother's dress changed too much. Fairy Godmother said, "I understand...but you wouldn't mind if I cheer it up a bit? Wouldn't mind a nice blue?"
And the resulting dress ends up giving a very sophisticated and ethereal vibe, simultaneously showing forth pastel pink and bluish/lavender tones, which is something you would feel as though Ella and her mother would approve of.
To do this cheap color correction in post-production could actually be seen as disrespectful to the characters. Especially since they play her mother's lullaby when she's walking into the ballroom for the first time.
I hate to speak negatively in any way regarding this movie, because it's one of my favorites of all time and always will be. But this is definitely one thing I would change. I really do want to know who was responsible. 😅

In India, a lot of housholds use a product known as "Ujala," which is used to "whiten" white shirts and pants of School going children.
It's actually a blue coloured dye and only a few drops are added to to the water used for the last rinse.
The original dress' colour looks like what would have happened if a few extra drops were added, and the second dress looks like the colour those white shirts and pants would have have turned out if an overzealous parent used an entire bottle of "Ujala."

Thank you! It didn't keep me up at night but I always wondered what happened there ;-) I just love the costumes from the movie so I had to get all the dolls. But when I put the normal Cinderella Film Collection doll next to the bigger 17" Limited Edition doll, it just hit me. The limited one's dress is designed in the color of the photos from the making of the film and the smaller one's is darker blue like in the final movie. Normally, I like both colors but as I can see in your video, so many details get lost with the darker color. I really wonder why someone thought it would be a good idea to make it as blue as it is now.

The vibrant cerulean blue matches the blue on the prince's outfit, and helps Cinderella stand out against the palace walls and the ball guests. It's colorful and magical, appropriate for a dress made with magic. There are scenes in which the dress does show different colors, like aqua, cornflower-blue, and lilac, so the watercolor effect is still there.
The original dress is great to look at in real life, but the original color doesn't work in the film. It'll be the equivalent of the light pink flowers that Cinderella's turquoise maid dress is covered with. They blend in with the color, preventing it from looking like a polka doted mess, and only the bigger flowers near the hem of the skirt are visible.

I wasn't fond of the live action dress and never could pint point why. Seeing the real color side by side with the blue dress is an eye opener. I absolute love the real color, and I love how much more similar it is to the animated one. The butterflies that initially didn't like now compliment the dress perfectly. The blue dress is ok but it's just look so saturated it feels like a visual sore thumb. I understand why they make it blue but I would love to see the original one, much more on the silver side, like the original animated silver dress.
Anyways, I'll take saturated blue over whatever Emma Watson was wearing in the Beauty and The Beast.

I absolutely think Cinderella is the best of the live action movies. While I will still like the movie, the bright blue was kind of cringe worthy (but still beautiful), and then when I checked further I see that is not what the designer had intended. I think they should redo the movie with the original color of silvery blue. I would buy a new copy for my home. (The too Blue dress was the only thing that mars a perfect, excellently done movie.

In the animated film, Cinderella's dress and hair style were actually a ball outfit. In the live action movie, she looks like a girl going to prom night, except for all the petticoats. That's what makes it look cheap. Apart from that: historically speaking, a girl of that time would never have worn her hair open in public.

Unpopular opinion: I love the costumes, they’re gorgeous and creative and really well made. BUT I don’t feel the essence of the 1950 animated movie. The 1950 movie has more of a mid 19th century setting and you can clearly see that in the architecture and dresses and fashion. The live action adaptation as it’s own Cinderella movie is really good (both visually and storytellingwise) but as a adaptation of 1950 movie it’s just okay (again both visually and storytelling wise). It’s in my opinion TOO colourful, at least for being an adaptation based on the 1950 movie which was more ethereal and decent
