This is by far my favorite live action film so far, with Little Mermaid coming in a close second. I wish Little Mermaid had used the same screenplay writer from Cinderella. Also, Julie Andrews would have perfect as the Fairy Godmother and now I'm sad we didn't get that 😂
Julie Andrews as the Fairy Godmother would have been a full circle moment as well given that she played Cinderella in the R&H TV musical back in the 50s.

The dress colour alteration is so frustrating because not only did it look much better before it but it was actually more in line with the animated one which was silver.
I totally agree on the dress color. The original silver blue of the actual dress is so much better than the vibrant blue that they used in the film. That is my only complaint about the movie which is a masterpiece IMHO.

I agree on EVERYTHING you said, and I'd add that I wanted The magic song, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo in the film so bad... It's the most famous song from the movie, and the Fairy Godmother still uses the words to do her magic in this live action. It's a very short song and they could've shortened it even more if needed, and it would have worked perfectly in the scene. Helena's version in the end credits proves it would've sound very well too.
Oh my goodness, casting Julie Andrews as Fairy Godmother would be PERFECT, you are so right! And I agree about keeping her old dress color and an up-do hair. I didn't care to watch this movie, I think because of those reasons, something just felt TOO different (I was also 11). While I do agree with some of the changes, I feel like others (ie costuming) would make the adaptation too literal and take away from the remake having some originality. Plus I believe Cinderella wanted to stay at the mansion because it was the last place she recalled being loved, and when she married, she didn't need the now toxic environment anymore.
yessss. also she was not being 'passive' I don't think- she was being so good and kind she was willing to not rebel. she was actually respecting the authority of her stepmother which is NOT being passive, it's being obedient. also the whole moral of the story is being kind and good pays off and brings you happiness, and that you should love your enemies. so I think he got that wrong but pretty much everything else was spot on (I cant lie though I still love the blue dress :)

Have you seen the version of Lady Tremaine they did in Once Upon a Time in season 6? I love how faithfully they made her costume especially her grey wig.

I’m really fine with Cinderella not fighting to save herself. There’s something to be said for the hero who understands when the story is over. It’s not a story about what she DOES, but rather about who she IS. There is a little homage to “Sing Sweet Nightingale” in the scene where she gathers eggs, but I think you’re right that it would’ve been better if they at least referenced more of the songs in there. I would have loved for her mother to have sung “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” with a reprise of the tune when she dances with the prince. It also could have been nice to hear a version of her working song that the mice sing in the original (but not sung by the mice). I would have raised a number of the necklines and made Cinderella’s eyebrows blonde-those things are too distracting. The other changes, I would like.

I did like you ideas. TOTALLY READ MY MIND!!!! I absolutely agree with all of this. Another change I'd make to the ending is how she sings. What if instead of quietly singing to herself, she loudly and deliberately sings to the Prince to get his attention? With Lady Tremaine ordering her to stop singing, and in response Cinderella defiantly keeps on singing and looks Lady Tremaine straight in the eyes? Cinderella singing as an act of rebellion, instead of just passing the time, would also help emphasize the movie's "Have Courage and Be Kind" motto.

The animated movie is pretty much irrelevant when it comes to this live-action Cinderella film. Every single visual choice for this film is fantastic. A visual marvel with beautiful locations and stunning outfits. So fucking what that the animated Lady Tremaine had gray hair and wore burgundy; how is that in anyway important or relevant for what the live-action movie had in mind for the stepmother's portrayal? The director and filmmakers were rightfully prioritizing the live-action medium and what works best for each character, which is completely different for what works for a cartoon made in the 1940s. Stuff like putting live-action Cinderella in a bun or have her wear jewelry and gloves for the ball, completely misses the point of her character, and also makes her look tacky. How exactly is a bun more beautiful or elegant than a wavy, loose hairstyle, sections of which wore woven to look like a tiara? They intentionally avoided portraying the stepmother as ugly, aging, or overweight, to avoid depicting dumb stuff like an undesirable-looking woman being jealous of a younger, desirable one. In the animated movie, everyone is more of a tool, architype and stereotype rather than a person. What we know about them is surface level and any personality trait seems to be made up on the spot just to get the character say or do something specific. The animated Cinderella was on the very verge of crying just from the beads been yanked from her neck. How is that consistent with how she acted before? You'd think anger or shock will the first emotion she shows. Almost every single animated and live-action Cinderella is just some random, generic, nice girl who just happens to be nicknamed Cinderella, but Lily James's portrayal of the fairy tale character herself, her very essence, what she stands for and what she's about, was perfectly executed. It's like the fairy tale character came to life.
There actually kind of was a reference to sing sweet nightingale, cause during a scene right after the stepmother comes to the house, you can hear cinderella sing a few words from sing sweet nightingale while going to get eggs from chickens, so at least they still referenced it, but i wish they did a bigger reference
Love the comment/observation of Ella as a victim of domestic abuse. One could say, Ella was trapped in Domestic Slavery. (I wonder, this no real income, did they only eat eggs and picked vegetables and berries.
Man, I feel like I'm the only one that really, genuinely liked Branagh's Death On The Nile. You haven't been the only one I've watched that have said it wasn't that great. As far as Cinderella 2015 goes, I need to rewatch it. I remember thinking it was okay but not liking it that much but that's actually been better than my opinion of other live action Disney remakes. To me, Jungle Book has been the best, Lion King 2019 was a C- to me and Aladdin 2019 was the biggest letdown (although I thought Will Smith did fine as Genie, Robin Williams is one of the toughest acts to follow).
If it were up to me, I'd make Cinderella more dreamy and old style. I envision a very feminine and soft-mannered girly girl and a prince that looks more neat and more charming.
@@goyam2981 Sounds like it'd be good or at least have a look that stands out. I'm waiting for another studio to announce they're doing a horror version of the story since these low budget indies have started. Sorry if you think that's bad news. The premium cable channel Showtime did one more than 20 years ago of Snow White (titled Snow White: A Tale Of Terror which had Sigourney Weaver as the witch).
In ym opinion all Disney (princess) live action movies should be NON-musical like thsi one. Ofc with Cinderella and Snow White it´s kind off easier since the later ones (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, etc) are "made for" broadway and theatrical musical.. But still
Her not trying to save herself in the live action makes so much sense if you see a deleted scene (which should’ve been in the movie) where she tries to contact the prince.
I would have changed the dress and shoes by removing the butterflies. Made Cinderella’s dad remarry when she was still a child Made Cinderella fight her way out of the attic.
Yip, I definitely agree! Especially the songs are missing....this left me somewhat disappointed. Still, with all the differences, I still do not understand why the majority now complains about changes in The Little Mermaid now...at least this kept the magical songs and the sidekicks...
I love your take on how they should go with the new Snow White. I’m sad that they are not having actual dwarfs as to me they are elf’s. Also agree not all girls grow up to be girls bosses and that’s ok too! I love the idea she overcomes her anxiety and finds strength in her friendships and true love who he should also be her best friend. Can I ask Disney to consult with you on every new Princess Movie as you understand how we want a movie, to escape to a magical world of romance as the world we live in is so lacking in actual romance and magic. It’s a fairytale and should always stay true to this !!!
In fairness, certain of your critiques about the visuals are warranted, but when it comes to the story, it’s baffling (but unsurprising) that your primary critique about a movie which works BECAUSE of its more classical and traditional approach to storytelling, the value of self sacrifice and forgiveness, gender roles, etc., is that it should be more progressive.
Except for making the dress vivid blue instead of the actual gown blue silver designed by the costume designer, the movie is pretty perfect and a masterpiece. Only miss, IMHO, is making the dress digitally too blue in the final.
I can’t believe this is the ONLY good Disney Remake!!! And I like this movie a lot more than the 1950s Cinderella! It’s not offensive, It’s a bit flawed (imo), the acting is really good, 2:23 the colors are vibrant and vivid, it’s colorful, it’s dripping with atmosphere, Helena Bonham Carter did a fine job as the fairy godmother (I do respect your opinion tho), yeah some of the changes didn’t work, but hey at least it’s a beautiful visual masterpiece! And it’s still better than every offensive cringe remake garbage that Disney had put out!
Tbh, I cannot portray Drew Barrymore as a vilain. She look like one of the kindest people on Hollywood, like you see her and you automatically want to give her a hug 🤗
What nonsense. Even After is not a Cinderella adaptation, it's a Cinderella ADJECENT film. Danielle's personality might be fitting for a main character in the period piece they're going for, but she makes a HORRIBLE Cinderella. Where's the grace, where's the kindness. Lily James's portrayal was perfect.
I agree half way with the changes you made I like the way they did Cinderella hair in actual Cinderella 2015 it like the way they did it Cinderella hair at the wedding would too much like animated Cinderella and Cinderella 2015 is not try be like the animated Cinderella but do I agree that they should not have digital cgi the dress to make look more blue
They could explain Cinderella's childhood mor to when she was a baby before her stepmother even stepped in her role. A stepmother before her cat even gives Cinderella siblings and then made the more story interested in her stupid stepsisters.
Next Cinderella the oldest of her siblings, but make sure heard that her biological siblings are behind or the old Earth. I'm in the story since Cinderella is getting bullied by her stepmom and stepsisters.
Thank you, I was never a fan of the original but I always wonder why I didn't fully like this movie, and I think you just say it, she is more passive than in the original. Why she doesn't live if other people like her, she could ask them to live with them. Why she didn't try to escape?. She is tooooo goodie goodie that makes don't feel excitement when she gets what she deserves. Also I like in the original when the prince and cinderella are dancing alone with 'this is love'.
Also, I kinda see the casting of the matriarchs (the stepmother and the fairy godmother) here as ageist. I mean, I also love Helena, and Cate but, they're not the actors that pop up your mind when you think of the characters they play into live-action. Nevertheless, I still love their performance. Their characters here are definitely their own.
If you want a shot by shot remake just watch the animated version? Im seriously glad none of you have a hand in filmmaking because what is this comment lmao
I actually loath the narration. It's just irritating to be told something that I can already infer. I told have to be told she sad when she's crying. But I might actually enjoy it more with Julia Andrews
i would recast the fairy goodmother with melanie paxton who looks more the fairy godmother and plade her in Descendants and Prince charnen with Jonathan Bennett
I don't really enjoy the modern obsession with making all characters (somewhat) beautiful. Even the fairy godmother was made "kind of hot". I agree Julie Andrews would have been better, with no need to give her such a tight corseted dress. Cinderella would pop more if not everyone in the movie was also totally gorgeous.
Wanting the palace to look like some over-the-top pointy towers cliché from some fantasy is ridiculous. It goes against the realism and believability the movie established everywhere else.
Who complains that Cinderella is passive and points out that she could leave her abusive home obviously doesn't know anything about history and the social circumstances of the time and place the story is set in. A girl from that period cannot take up a job or study, nor can she run away; and having neither money nor learned a trade, even after running away all that she could do would be prostituting herself. She could take up some menial work of course, but not being under the protection of a family would make her fair game in the eyes of most men. Losing her father is not only a personal loss for Cinderella, it deprives her of any kind of safety. Her stepmother know that, which is why she has full command over her and delights in teasing and tormenting her.
Although I agree I have to say that her attempting to run away but then going back after she met the prince felt kind off... weird? Like either go for it completely or don´t make her attempt to run away in the first place. Also experiencing abuse for years and since you´re a kid is kind off different and worse (and more justifiyable for not running away) than experiencing for "only" like a year and when you´re an adult. I love that they showed us HOW Cinderella got slowly more and more abused, but they should´ve started it when she still was a child

Amazing! Thank you thank you - this film gets so much praise and rightly so it did a lot of good things but it’s those simple fixable changes which to me seem obvious improvements which they didn’t make which always holds me back from overly praising this film. Seeing this video I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. Thanks!
No offense, you keeps having the same uniform gown. Change every time and the question say yeah, favorite go. Dmother needs more dresses choices than just her ribbon. Blue red sash give her a different color gowns. But maybe I'll be happy.
I agree with most these changes. Cinderella has always been my favorite Disney Princess and I hate all the attacks she gets. I would have loved the original silvery dress, Julie Andrews would have been an amazing fairy godmother . I don't excactly agree with Lady Tremaines hair being Grey, but they could have showed or hinted at the fact that she dyed it. Like others have pointed out I think it would have made more sense for Cinderellas father to remarry when she was little and to show her slowly being broken. I definetly agree with you about the songs, but at least they did put 'a dream is a wish' and 'Bibbidi bobbidi boo' in the soundtrack. I believe they played in the credits. I'm glad they didn't make the mice talk. As much as I liked them in the original, I think it would have taken away from the live action. Overall I'm very happy with this version of the movie, as a live action remake of the 1950 version, while still being original.
What you shared were hardly "tweaks". Your observations were overhaul-level. I don't agree with most of them. (I thought this adaptation really worked.)
They cannot afford Julie Andrews, budget maybe 😅 and thats why called adaptation, not 1 : 1 remake. The other live action is not good, except jungle book.
This is such a confounding concept video because, seemingly the reason no one likes the new remakes is because they don’t try anything new with the story and just do a shot by shot recreation of the disney version. So what you needed to make this movie “perfect” was to make it…exactly like the disney version? I’m sorry but these changes are superfluous and add nothing. This movie works because it wasnt a studio mandated list of attributes from the original, it was its own creation. The songs are cute but add nothing. Cinderella isn’t a musical, removing the songs doesn’t change the story. Changing the songs into well known enligsh lullabies sung to a child in an english countryside grounds the movie into a world similar to ours. Julie Andrews is such a pick for someone who was clearly born in 1996 and needs to move on. Just because the og movie has a grandma doesn’t mean this one has to as well. It’s its own story. If what you guys wanted was a shot to shot remake then oh boy am i glad none of you had a hand in this production. The movie is set in fantasy realism, not disneyland. The dress color adjusted in the overall color correction is certainly your opinion, the dress has so many colors it almost eats any color correction, if you watch the movie closely you can tell her dress shifts from intense blue to soft cornflower blue in a blink. The comments made me glad none of you write screenplays because those movies would be atrocious.
I liked this movie, but it didn't make me want to watch it a second time. I think I'd enjoy your version more. Can someone work on a deep-fake/Ai version using the original footage to Frankenstein this together? With Julie Andrews. And Cinderella's father remarrying when she's still a child so it's shown she was conditioned to abuse and didn't just capitulate as a teen. And new versions of the music. And Cinderella fighting to get out of the tower and singing loudly.
Cate Blanchett's 1940's styling was the thing I didn't like about this movie. I mean, ball gowns could be 1800s, but the stepmother jumped ahead to nearly 1950, in my opinion.
This is my least favorite live action because I’m disheartened by the lack of reverence the cast and filmmaker had for the original 😞 they spoke poorly of the 1950 princess in all the press and you can tell they misunderstood the assignment. The animated character has so much spirit and resilience and strength and so many human qualities like frustration and sometimes even grumpiness that never make it into Lily’s comparatively bland performance. Lady Tremaine is so cold and calculating and intriguing in the animated film and of such a dualistic nature that’s intrinsic that you never know what you’re going to get. Cate, in comparison, is much more broad- laughing wildly like a hyena in her cheetah print robe in the kitchen. Making kissy faces with in the invitation seem to be comedic. Aggressively smashing the glass slipper instead of doing it in an indirect way, and ripping Cinderellas pink gown herself instead of instigating something between the sisters. They really missed the mark here imo and I think if they just displayed some love and kindness for the original it would’ve done them a world of good.
I agree, I think the same fate will go for the Snow White live action judging by the way they talked about it. I also found this problem in The Little Mermaid when they had Ariel steer the ship into Ursula instead of Eric, that moment was supposed to show Triton that humans are good, but they temporarily killed him off and turned it into a lil girl power moment for Ariel, and it just wasn't written well, misunderstanding why the original did what they did.
This is by far my favorite live action film so far, with Little Mermaid coming in a close second. I wish Little Mermaid had used the same screenplay writer from Cinderella. Also, Julie Andrews would have perfect as the Fairy Godmother and now I'm sad we didn't get that 😂

Cinderella was my number 1 until I saw the Little Mermaid. I think for me the only fault in Cinderella was not having some of the songs.
Compared to all the other live action remakes, it's already perfect.
almost* perfect
Yeah, Aladdin was the only remake I was actually excited for (because the trailers looked good) and it turned out to be a huge disappointment 😞
Best version ever!
can we PLESSE get more little mermaid videos? i have gotten over that movie yet 😭
I would have changed the dress and shoes by removing the butterflies.
Made Cinderella’s dad remarry when she was still a child
Made Cinderella fight her way out of the attic.
I think the butterfly’s on the shoes make sense because they were there on the original
Yip, I definitely agree! Especially the songs are missing....this left me somewhat disappointed. Still, with all the differences, I still do not understand why the majority now complains about changes in The Little Mermaid now...at least this kept the magical songs and the sidekicks...
They complain because they can't see past ariels skin color
i like your list! i'm obsessed the the updo look, that would be incredible. but this is still my favorite LA adaptation besides Cruella and mermaid :D
It really feels like this movie is trying to be Ever After (1998), instead of its animated counterpart.
In fairness, certain of your critiques about the visuals are warranted, but when it comes to the story, it’s baffling (but unsurprising) that your primary critique about a movie which works BECAUSE of its more classical and traditional approach to storytelling, the value of self sacrifice and forgiveness, gender roles, etc., is that it should be more progressive.
all of your tweaks i 100% agree with, HOW DOES THIS HAVE UNDER 1K LIKES PLS
I love Drew Barrymore as Danielle. She's the definitive Cinderella for me! I would've loved Drew as the Wicked stepmother! It would be a cute nod!
Kenneth Branagh has made some good movies especially Henry V. Dead Again, Hamlet and Thor were pretty good too. And now Cinderella
A perfect film good for kids and adults with a youngheart ❤
Next Cinderella the oldest of her siblings, but make sure heard that her biological siblings are behind or the old Earth. I'm in the story since Cinderella is getting bullied by her stepmom and stepsisters.
They could have started Cinderella's life choice. They're at the beginning of the story a bit
Her first address.Actually looks more purple than silver blue and pink
In the original film I like when the birds 🐦 made her dress 👗.
Cuz before her dad left, she made a promise she'd live nicely with her stepmom and sisters.
Did y’all hear about Tommy Ross? He’s taking Carrie White to the ball 😅
Tbh, her dress design is more similar to Belle's animated yellow dress so the first time I saw it, I've always had mixed feelings about it.
Can you review jungle book 2016
Wish they would go back and make these changes
7nless they do another one which I highly doubt unless it's like 20 years later
@@moritzmartini4132 She went back out of female modesty. Any girl can fall into the next best guy's hand like a ripe fruit. But when he looked for her high and low she knew he was in earnest and that he was a reliable guy, and said yes.
Actually, they should agree Cinderella more dresses to try on for the animational part of her role. No offense her just in her service. Gown, the whole entire time does not scream. Cinderella, just scream, Cinderella slave.
Cinderella has s*** I have more wardrobe than just. Her service gal Barbara and draw someymoon.Dresses this the queen duty dresses
Can you make the Live action Jungle Book movie from 2016, perfect?
They're literally just animals and a preteen Indian boy in red pants living in the jungle. I don't know what you expect.
I love this movie
PLS LILY JAMES MUST USE BLUE CONTACT LENS
Aree 100%
You can't, it's already perfect, period.
Way too much "lecture" and weird opinions - doesn't seem to really understand the story.
I would have given cinderella at least four siblings a two brother and three sister
