A king that doesnt use force to keep his authority will most likely lose respect and the kingdom but this is the woke universe we are talking about 🤪 it doesnt have to make sense , it just need to be woke conveniently for the woke agenda .
@@superstd Agree. Monarchy and Democracy are vastly different. If a king let someone being blatantly disrespectful like that and in front of many people at that, it would actually cause the people to be dissatisfied, since the whole deal of their ruling is 'Chosen by God' thing. I really hate it when writers dumb down monarch's power all for the sake to make the female lead 'quirky'
That's because this movie was a dumb comedian's idea, written out by a staff full of stupid executives. It's Hollywood's idea of progressive writing and progressive media.
I will always prefer Cinderella 3's prince, the prince that yeeted himself out a window and ran away from his own wedding because he believed in talking mice. He was peak himbo.
My favorite part about this movie, that baffles me so much, is their inexplicable decision to _downplay how bad Cinderella's home life is._ Alex already pointed out her absurdly clean, spacious, and brightly-lit basement bedroom, but that's not all. Cinderella is shown serving the stepfamily breakfast, like, once at the very beginning, and that's basically the only chore we see her do. Meanwhile, the stepfamily is shown out in the yard hanging laundry on the clothesline in _three separate scenes!_ Sure doesn't look like Cinderella's been made a servant in her own home to me! She's visibly clean as a whistle the whole time too, despite the narrator's claim that they call her Cinderella because she's always covered in soot from the fireplace. Like, bitch where?? Not to mention how she apparently has plenty of money to buy materials for her dresses, infinite free time to hang out in her room and work on said dresses, and no problem at all going out to the marketplace to try and peddle said dresses! Literally her only problem in life is that she's inexplicably not allowed to be a business owner in this bizarre society that's modern in basically every other way.
Plus during the time period women were actually encouraged to sew dresses and were actually praised for making an earning out of it, basically meaning the one problem she's facing is actually completely fake.
@@redrangerrr558 A better way they could've done it is if Ella's stepfamily is almost out of money but they still want to keep up the appearance of wealthy nobility by preventing Ella from getting a real job but still forcing her to be the maid.
Well of course, did you not see who she's living with?? It's her sisters and step mom..and since they're wahmen they can do no wrong, and are basically god's gift to poor mean vile and disgusting men who abuse everyone🤡🤡
It's because she's not allowed to own a business that she's horribly mistreated and abused that we're to stupid to comprehend all her freedom for hobbies and supposed to be Yas Queen at her entitled boss girl tantrum. Ugh what a nausea inducing concept
And was just impressed by her... Because she had the "courage"/"fearlessness" of climbing up a statue of a dead KING and sitting on its lap.. SO COOL ✨ ALSO the fact that she comes from an oppressed family aka stepmother she is strong/confident enough to do such a shameful act ( considering kings are respectful "legends") for what... just fun... And also not get held accountable for her behaviour.. I mean my parents are really nice and all..but if I do such a dumb behaviour in public...I will sure as hell be held more than accountable lol.. D k what shit this movie was 😭😂😂
Right? I mean, the whole movie was basically about women not giving up their dreams over a man. And Cinderella stood by this throughout the whole movie. And yet, the prince's character (who at some point in the movie admitted that he wanted to be a GOOD king, not just "a king" like his dad is) gave up his dream of being a good king to travel the world with someone he doesn't even have an actual "committment" to. Cindy was like, "yeah, let's not label it" XD
The scene at 4:09 is so stupid. Honestly if this were realistic at all, Cinderella would have been executed right then and there for disrespecting the King. But, whatever. Its fine, she's the main character of course. She cant die and they needed some way to establish that Ella isn't "just like other girls."
Exactly!!! And rolling her eyes and making weird expressions at nobility in the palace 😬🤦♀️ plus kind of disrespecting the monarch 💀 Homegirl gave us cringe girlboss energy through and through
Cinderella (1899 short film) Cinderella (1911 silent film) a short film by Disney in 1922 that served as a precursor to the full-length 50s one Cinderella (first Disney one from 1950) Cinderella II Cinderella III (both sequels to the original) Cinderella (the 90s Brandy one) Cinderella (the 2015 Disney live action adaptation) A Cinderella Story (Hilary Duff) Ever After (1998) Another Cinderella Story (2008 Selena Gomez) A couple other made-for-TV adaptations in 1957 and 1965 The Glass Slipper (1955) The Slipper and the Rose (a 1976 British film) and that's after like 10 minutes of google research, it looks like there's even more. and probably a lot more movies that follow the tropes but aren't named after it. It is interesting how old the story is but still relatable enough to people for them to adapt it so many times.
There were a lot of contradicting things: Prince buying the dress she made to "change the system and challenge society" but once she told him she wants to work after becoming queen he was like "BUT WOMEN'S JOB IS..."
I guess that could show how even while being progressive, some societal concepts are so deep rooted you don't realise what is wrong until you really think over it
The historical accuracy is at -%100, the clothes are made of fabrics that did not exist at the time, the clothes are too modern, and there is sooo much more! Also how did Cinderella get that fancy fabric that could have been too expensive for her? How did she get away with using that fabric and sewing when her steps "hate" her? Why was the prince wearing a useless head scarf?
1. I dont know how to answer the first thing u said abt the historical accuracy 2. She got that fancy fabric cus they never said her family was in critical financial difficulties, also when she was making her ball gown, she had previously sold her other dress to the prince at the market, and he had paid x3 of the amount she was originally selling it for 3. Her stepfamily dont hate her, and in fact, her stepmother mentioned in the movie that she didnt mistreat her out of spite but because she didnt want Cinderella to go through what the stepmother had to go through when she was young 4. It would actually be different if the prince hadnt worn the headscarf to find Cinderella, cus ig its part of his disguise so people wouldnt recognise him as the prince
I agree with _everything_ that you said, but the "Brandy" version is even _less_ historically accurate (& even an uglier Cinderella) than this version. In "Descendants 4 - The rise of Red", Brandy looks _so_ ugly that she looks like some grandma!
Why is it in bad fairytales the characters say “princesses don’t sew, princesses don’t ride horses, princesses don’t do sports and don’t read complex books”. Historically princesses did excellent needle work and were well educated, spoke several languages, were fit and expected to know about their country or the country of their betrothed. They were some of the most intelligent people in the kingdom and would be expected to be able carry on conversations with ambassadors, priests, and have good musical skills. On top of being well dressed and poised. They had access to the best tutors their family could afford. Can we please get more intelligent and witty princesses who take their duty to family and country seriously?
It’s so weird how nowadays it’s apparently not allowed for women in films and media to still be strong and independent while also just happening to want to fall in love. Like, those two can happen together you know.
I wish more movies and tv shows would show this without it being forced or instant love. Like you can have both and have it believable but rarely movies or tv shows full that off correctly
@@Katielovegood44 yeah, it’s so weird how they have to make the men so unlikable just to show that the woman is strong, like they’re afraid she won’t be strong if the men around her aren’t morons.

There's way more american girls than british girls, so, bigger market. And the guy with british accent goes with the european fantasy a lot of americans are obsessed about
The king spared her life. If this was anything close to reality, she would have been killed for making a “mockery” of him, by sitting on a guards statue. *I get that this isn't reality*
@@propio2957 Yeah. So by his reaction and the existence of the statue the king clearly cared for his father. She'd be at minimum flogged or possible given to his guards for entertainment then flogged.
I kinda found the step-sisters hilarious, and the truth is that they are not all that horrible to Ella and it sounds that at least Drizella kind of likes her if only she wasn't so self-centered.

The thing is Cinderella is a fairy tale, any studio can make their own Cinderella movie, not just Disney. Same goes to Universal making their own Snow White and Netflix/Warner Bros making their own The Jungle Book movie. The Disney property is just the animated movie, not the actual fairy tale story
I don’t know why people are constantly remaking the same version of Cinderella. There is a version of Cinderella across many cultures. My personal favorite was a Native American version. Where (spoilers) the “prince” was a magical being where all the women would be tested by his sister. The test was whether or not they could see him (he can turn himself invisible although his sister can see him). The test is asking if the women can see him. They all fail because they all lie, except the “Cinderella” of the story. Because she didn’t lie, she got to marry the “prince”.
I'm really starting to hate these "girlboss" movies. Nothing wrong with girlbosses when executed well, but forced onto an existing character who's already strong in her own right is exhausting.
To be fair, I don't really think they care about all that. This is more like a public spectacle meant to create buzz rather than a serious re-telling of the original story tbh
Cinderella then: a kind soul who didn't let her abusive stepmother and stepsisters destroy her Cinderella now: a smarmy jerkoff who does whatever she wants, even if stepmom disapproves
I think 'Ella Enchanted' did the whole empowered Cinderella thing much better without being preachy. I'm really sad it's so underrated. And 'Cinderella III' is just such a classic. Edit: I totally forgot Ever After. Thanks for reminding me guys.
And the Disney live action adaptation with Lily James as Cinderella and Cate Blanchett as the Stepmother was beautiful and amazing and probably the best Disney live action adaptation imo
@@Erasureeraser NO WAY!This version is *SO MUCH BETTER* than the Disney one!And THE best live action adaptation of all remains"Ever After"with Drew Barrymore!
Fun fact: Queen Victoria’s white wedding dress became a fashion staple that continues to this day. It wasn’t traditional (back in the day) to wear a white dress for your wedding because of how much effort you would need to clean it if it got dirty. Cinderella literally could have used that to her advantage!
I have no patience for people who trash the Disney Cinderella for "not doing enough to save herself." It's so insulting, she had no means to escape her situation and even though she was treated horribly she remained kind to everyone-even the people who treated her like nothing! She is rewarded for her kindness in the end and to me someone who rises above it and shows kindness regardless of her treatment is far more inspiring than #girlboss Cinderella.
For real! Cindy is such a great and courageous person for surviving what she did and still not becoming bitter but just kind. And what do people mean by she did not help herself. Like you cannot legit imagine being in her shoes. She is a great role model . People need to respect her more
Yes! I think the same, now it seems like the norm to trash the older Disney princesses. But if people would actually watch the movie, with a critical mind, would notice that Cinderella wasn’t out for man. She was in a horrible situation and just wanted a break. There is a great video essay, I think it was on a channel called Screen Prism, which talks about how people blaming Cinderella for not leaving her situation sooner is basically victim blaming. We could all use more kind people in the world 🥺
I feel the same way when people talk crap about Ariel and how she gave up her voice for a man when in reality Ariel simply wanted to explore man’s world and a handsome prince just happened to be a bonus. And honestly I like how Ariel saw what she wanted and went for it and in the end she got to live her life and got her prince.
This movie is literally shitting on Cinderella's original character and what is percieved as her feminine qualities. Whatever did they think they were achieving by making her character so unpleasant and stripping her off of the qualities that made her special? her kindness, courage and peserverence and forgiving nature despite the adversities she faced is what makes Cinderella Cinderella. She is a survivor and she is strong.
fr the original Cinderella is strong because no matter what, she's still kind and forgiving. But the movie saw that as a flaw because apparently being a "strong woman" means you can't be "soft" smh
you have stated facts. honestly i prefer the real original cinderella movie. yes she is kind, gentle, soft, feminine, and forgiving so what. Seriously what's wrong with any one of these aspects? like a gentle feminine women cannot be a strong women? this is just like one of those film..."I am quirky and I am not like other girls..."
This Cinderella feels like the kind of girl I'd highkey avoid in school And what happened to the gentle and nurturing godmother? :( She gave off such soft and comfortable vibes Everyone in this movie feels like an asshole in one way or another
I dont understand why they want "feminist" and "you dont need a man" movies and choose to do a terrible remake of Cinderella instead of idk Tiana from princess and the frog??? The true independent and hardworking princess of disney
People, including whoever made this movie, apparently always forget that in the original story (and animated Disney movie) Cinderella was LITERALLY suffering emotional abuse. Putting up with that doesn't make her weak--if anything it makes her stronger. (Blaming her for being weak and submissive is literally shaming an abuse victim for struggling to get help). Plus, Cinderella just wanted to go to a ball, escape her wicked family and have fun for once. Like she didn't even realize she danced with the prince until the next day so it's not like she just wanted to be royalty and was seeking him out. smh I don't know why people keep making Cinderella movies if they're just gonna mock the original source material. (edit: I don't know why I put it was the first animated Disney princess movie bc it's not lol my bad)
In the original story, the stepsisters cut off their toes and heel so that the shoe fits (the Grimm version). I'm waiting for the Cinderella movie that shows that
And so Cinderella gets so upset that she sings a song... As you do... This is why I love Alex and his channel. The comedy that he just slides into the narration and is just so nonchalantly and under the radar for me is just great.
Right?! At least the Disney live action Cinderella had beautiful dresses, but these were just disappointing. Even at the ball so many of the other characters had dresses that were way better than any Ella made. I genuinely don't understand why they made it that way.
@@luisab3079 True! It doesn't look that impressive. Also, it didn't even fit her that well. The edge of her glove is practically falling off, and the bust area didn't look tidy
I mean, the only dress I can actually stand to look at on Camila Cabello is the pink one Idina Menzel throws ink on, but her ball gown was hideous and what was that pink monstrosity she had on with the high-low skirt and the choker? It also makes me laugh how two Cinderella dresses fell victim to marketing. 1950 Cinderella’s dress was actually silver, but Disney couldn’t sell those dresses because it looked like a wedding dress, and I can’t decide which one I hate more here: the washed out pastel pink or the lilac from the posters.
In this variation, it's blatantly obvious they tried realllllyyy hard with the strong independent girl character. It's fine that she wants to make dresses AND fall in love, why is that such a stigma with girl characters? Yet it's weird how they let Ella not give up her wants but have the prince give up his throne. I hate movies where one has to give something up in order to be with someone. Whether it's a business, their whole life, royalty, etc. it's just a huge gesture to someone you've known for like a day or two lmao.
@@RealogOnlyBrodie That part really bothered me. Like, did they never pick up a history book? Seamstresses were so common during whatever era that was.
@@RealogOnlyBrodie not the only job per se, they were also farmhands, maids, nannies etc. But certainly it was one of the jobs that women were expected to do. Lower class women have ALWAYS worked throughout history, there would be no chance of surviving without at least both parents (and probably several of the children) bringing in money
I think it's an attempt to even the scale. There are a LOT of movies and stories that have women giving up everything for a man, but the opposite rarely ever happens, so I guess they are trying to spice things up a bit by presenting alternative stories. Not really my thing, but I appreciate variety.

Original Cinderella: is suffering from abuse and gets by very hard because she is physically and emotionally isolated from real people, but still has the courage to try and get out and explore the world and in the end it pays off and she even finds somebody to connect with and she is finally free of her childhood abuse 😭😭 Amazon Cinderella : is sassy and rude because she’s such a girlboss and ‘oh, fine, I guess I’ll go to the ball, but god forbid that you think I’m like other girls because, uh , I live in an aesthetic basement and I talk to mice’
Getting invited to a ball would be the best thing that could happen to someone then! You get to mingle with the most important people in society, maybe strike up a friendship or business deal. In fact since she wants to be a seamstress, going to a ball would be the best thing for especially wearing a dress she designs. It just shows how dumb they make her in this just for the sake of “throwing off social norms”. How much more interesting would it have been if she gladly went to the ball and we see her catting with people charming them with her intelligence and wit and ends up getting a noble or rich merchant to give her a loan to start her dress shop?

I’ll say this over and over: WHERE is this supposed to take place??? Everybody talks in a British accent expect for Ella, so WHERE??? Is it because filmmakers just assume all royals speak British??
I love every iteration of Cinderella (the 1950 Disney movie, Ever After, the 2015 remake, A Cinderella Story, the one with Brandy, heck even Cinder Elmo) but you couldn’t pay me to watch this movie
And if you really want a musical version, try The Slipper and the Rose (I like the others, too--but all I can say about the 2021 thing is that it's not really Cinderella).
The whole 'Average lifespans back then were like 40' is actually, well it's not WRONG but it's misleading. Yes, if you crunched the average age people in these eras died at, then it would come to about 40. However that average was dragged down by a very high child mortality rate. If you survived childhood, living up to your 60s or older wasn't actually uncommon
@@Kyman102 that's not entire true either. It's kind of more of "if you remove all of the premature deaths from illness, accidents, etc" which is more than childhood... It wasn't uncommon for those same things to kill 20 or 30 year olds either
The die-hards could live to older ages 60+ back in, I guess 1600 or something? No idea when this film pretends to be. Problem is indeed child mortality rates skew the balance, it would be better if you compare how many % of the total living population is in age group xx-xx and then compare the numbers. Idk I'm not a statistic smart person.

As literally every human has said: Ever After did Feminist Cinderella first and better. Just slapping a "#GirlBoss" over a trendy celeb of the moment does not a feminist lead make. Danielle was a successful feminist Cinderella because they gave her a passion and goal that wasn't just "succeed at something that aint a man." She was self-taught. She had a political opinion. She had a hobby. She thought outside the box and defied social expectations based on her creativity and resourcefulness, and not just by being your standard nonspecific ceiling-smasher.
@Erwin Lii Still very good. Brandy's Cinderella chose to escape on her own and was caught by the prince leaving. Even that demonstrates an agency most versions don't. I also lile the scene where she says a girl shouldn't be treated like a princess but like a person. And I get that its okay for girls to like girly things and stuff, but it seems counter intuitive to the GuurlBozz message that Cindy wants to make a career out of shinies and fluffies and pink tulle, but I guess the writers thought they were maling up for ny having the sister sibling take the throne after all (the ending they stole from Coming to America 2).
I agree for the most part. Danielle was an amazing character. But Ever After fell a little flat for me because Danielle was so amazing she didn’t need the Prince at all. She saved herself at every moment. I’m not saying I wanted the Prince to have to save her or for her to be a damsel in distress who needed rescuing, I just wished their relationship was a little more equal. The prince clearly loved her and found her fascinating but she didn’t need him at all. In fact, she was basically his special guide the whole time, the epitome of a wise character who leads the prince to better himself, but who does not change or grow herself. I just wish that we could have seen some kind of change in her that would explain how she grew closer to him and came to feel he was important to her enough that she wanted to marry him, and I don’t feel the movie gave us that. On the other hand, it has been awhile since I saw the movie so maybe I’m misremembering it. But I have seen it multiple times and each time felt a little disappointed that we couldn’t see why she bonded with him and needed the prince in her life. Edit: I do agree that Ever After is the best adaptation of this story and Danielle is the best Cinderella.
@@gingergoddess8953 I think that ending of sister becoming queen also happens in a few other stories as well, the one that comes to mind is princess hours
From a character perspective, the prince saying to Ella that she wouldn’t be able to do what she wants if they were married made no sense. Throughout the story, the prince fell in love with Ella because she was different, so why would he want to change her if she were to marry him? He’d be king no one could tell him what to do or what is proper.

For me, the best point of the movie is the fact that she did find her love, but she didn't agreed to his wants early on, but taught him to choose for himself. I liked her character's ending of finally being able to do what she wants and having someone who supports that. Idina and Billy Porter couldn't save this movie overall. James Corden was probably the worst I found here.
This film felt like they tried to do an Ella Enchanted style remake... but failed miserably. Ella Enchanted had the modern twists, some contemporary songs, costumes weren't historically accurate, twists on the OG Cinderella story, forward thinking views etc. but they did in a way that was cohesive all the way through. The costumes and sets all looked like they were from the same world and time, the story changes all made a lot of sense as well. But this was just a mess! Also want to say having recently rewatched Ever After it still holds up really well considering how old it is! Such a lovely movie!
Even if I had never heard of this movie before, the poster alone is already off-putting to me. I really HATE this smug look she gives and I also hate when they pull medieval stories half-heartedly into the modern time... If you want to modernize a fairy tail, do it fully or don't do it at all. Either leave it in it's own timeframe or fully commit to putting it into today like Westside Story did for Romeo and Juliet. But not freakin' pop-songs and what I assume to be modern fashion in a medival/renaisane movie! Also fuck off with that self-entitled "power-girl" bullshit where she has to be mean to everyone. That's not charming or empowering, it's just obnoxious. Also how does she go from talking smak to the king - who could literally have her executed for talking back - to being subserviant to her step-mother? Is she meek or bold? Make up your mind!
I completely agree!! This movie was an absolute mess. I also hate how they tries to make Cinderella "Sarcastic and witty" to make her a "StRonG FeMale" but she just comes off as fricking vain and annoying. The comedy feels so forced and try-hard.
Man, I totally agree. Everyone choose that time period because of the fabulous dresses. They forgot those times were difficult time periods. A lot of ppl died young.
Someone really decided Ella needed to be a seamstress girlboss and then gave her some of the worst dresses of any version of Cinderella in existence. 🥴
If you want a modern take on Cinderella, A Cinderella Story featuring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray is great. If you want a Cinderella to be the heroine there is Ella Enchanted with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy. The sequels of the Disney films, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time is a decent animated sequel. If you want one leaning more to historical there is Ever After with Drew Berrymore. Even Ever After High had the child of Cinderella, Ashlynn Ella. And she chose her own path. If you want a Cinderella with diversity,, with the great casting of Brandy, Jason Montalban and Whoopi Goldberg. Go to this one. (Mikai recommended and credit) Okay there you go six Cinderella takes that are way better than this one. Final edit: I won't be able to add all the great suggestions. So read the comments below!
I always loved how Ashlynn was still extremely in love and made that most of her personality, but could still hold on as a stand alone character on her own two feet.
Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella, the Disney live action adaptation was pretty good too, imo the best Disney live action adaptation so far that's truly faithful to the animated movie. Would rather watch that over live action adaptations of Aladdin, Mulan or even The Lion King
And if you want a Cinderella movie that has a truly diverse cast and someone as iconic as Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, watch the 1997 movie with Brandy.
The thing that pisses me off about this movie is that they tried making her a "strong independent woman" but it's literally just taking a character who's defining characteristic was kindness and silent strength and making her sassy and giving her a hobby apart from a man. Like it doesn't work in the context of Cinderella. It's a super old story just leave it as is and create something new
That's the problem, they have no original ideas, they just keep trying the same crappy heavy-handed-yet-horribly-misguided... trying-to-be-"gir-power" message... and failing to actually have relatable female leads... or actually have good "girl-power" messages.... just generic brand ones. Disney is just as guilty in the last 10ish years.
Honestly, out of the whole movie, the only character I really felt sorry for was the character they wanted to portray as a villain: the king. Hell, the king has a wife who only knows how to party, an arrogant daughter and a spoiled son. In fact, Cinderella practically disrespects him by sitting on top of her dead father's statue. (if it were to take the circumstances of that "macho" realm, he probably would have executed her, but he just reprimanded her while Cinderella continued to pester him). Honestly, I found Cinderella's "strong girl" portrait terrible.
I also felt bad for the Gwen. She's just trying to help people the best way she knows how: through policy making. As royalty, she has the perfect opportunity to enact change. Yet, no one is really listening to her (for some reason??)
@@jordanmchighlander9365 agree with you. By the way, mentioned about her, I remembered the interesting (and illogical) fact of that movie: Princess Gwan said that if she ruled, she would substitute coal energy for wind energy. However, the energy of coal as a form of fuel only happens in the first industrial revolution, and from the context of the film it is suggested that they are in the medieval period. What about wind energy? Taking the context of the time, there is not enough technology for that. All this leads us to believe that according to the film, the princess is a time-traveling alien 😂😂😂 This movie is bad from all angles. (Sorry my english, it's not my first language)
@@swirlgirl5389 LOL! Someone I kept getting annoyed about was "the domain of the sea monster" because old maps used sea monsters to represent dangerous waters or unexplored locations. I genuinely can't tell if the characters actually believe there's a sea monster (therefore, the world has a sea monster) or if "domain of the sea monster" is a name given to the unexplored territory.
Why is Prince Boring having to convince her to go to the ball?! How come the part that piques her interest is "There will be rich people there"??? The whole POINT was that Cinderella was SO abused and unhappy at home that all she wanted was a beautiful night out to have fun at the ball. And meeting her one true love was an unexpected cherry on top. I can't stand modern writers.
I think the reason why she got turned down is that, the woman she started asking was actually that kind of people who looked down on the term that they used which was "peasants". The woman mentioned that she probably just stole from her lady, and planned to even alert the king, without batting an eye for more than a few seconds on the dress. But the prince's sister wore the dress she made and she was just happy to see that. Although, "Ella" here on the contrast, definitely didn't do any big efforts on facing her problems but just run and "depend" on other people's work. Which was the grandmother, I think dreaming and having a goal in mind but not having the courage yet is fine. That's all.
I hate how to make this Cinderella "strong and Independent girl boss" they just... Downplay her abuse that she faces and it isn't even a big point in the plot. Now, don't get me wrong, abuse sucks ass, but it is an important part of Cinderella as a story, and honestly Cinderella getting away from that abuse does make her strong, even if she needed help from the prince to do it. Because, y'know, she was trapped in that household, of course she needed help.
Can we talk about how ugly Ella’s ball gown is? The promo art shows her wearing something shiny and lavender. The movie version looks like a wedding dress made by party city.
@@user-i9z It’s looks like an invert triangle/ V-shape. Very disappointing considering that there are background characters that have far better looking dresses than her’s.
@@parkchimmin7913 right! everyone else looks like they've got a hoop skirt on. i understand that they wanted her to stand out, but couldn't they have been more creative than just drastically changing her silhouette!? rather than standing out because she had a particularly eye-catching look, she sticks out like a sore thumb because her outfit is miles away from what would be appropriate in the movie's setting... and it's ugly, but that's not the only thing wrong with it is my point, lol.
The og Cinderella kept the whole place clean, did not stop dreaming, remained nice to the people abusing her but she was still labeled as a damsel in distress
Yes. I think she's labeled that because she cleand for other people (because she was forced to) instead of for herself and because all her troubles dissapeared because the prince walked in. I still admire her tho, she was mentally strong, kept her head up no matter what, never gave up, and she kinda was able to stand her ground to the stepmother before the prince even came.
Ella had potential with a dream of going into business by sewing dresses and saving her own self, but the scriptwriters ruined her with those rude, snarky lines. 😕
The main conflict makes even less sense when you realize that a seamstress is actually one of the few jobs women could have at the time lol This movie didn’t even try to be semi-realistic.
It would have taken them at least maybe less than 7 seconds for them to do a quick Google search of the jobs women were not allowed to do, and they could do one of those, and they would have plenty of freaking options
@@johnnyferalcat896 Even better, a quick google search would have allowed for the knowledge that at the time this should take place women had a limited option of jobs and there was a severe pay gap. This could have allowed for a more interesting premise around the same subject. Mindful, I do think that such a subject should be its own story instead of Cinderella. It's pretty obvious that the writer wanted to tell a different story, thus making the story this should be about shoehorned in.
It would of been better if she wanted to be a plumber. Lol it would have been perfect as the palace of versailles was the only place in France that had plumbing at the time.
Jesus Christ, this movie is so painfully acidic and bright I could've mistaken it for some trippy lucid dream I would have after trying to force myself to watch Enchanted several times over in the same night

never seen this movie but "she cray" honestly just revealed the entire movie lol crazy how two "words" can communicate an entire 1.5 hours of a movie lol
There’s so much I hate about people misinterpreting Cinderella’s (in most versions of the story) quiet strength as weakness. She had been emotionally abused by people who were supposed to be her family for years. This movie implies (even if it it unintentional) that victims of abuse are only strong if they have certain personality traits.
When i grew up i saw Cinderella as a strong women and i still do. She was abused and had little selfesteem left yet she never gave up hope and even decided to go to the ball and put herself first for the first time in her life and just feel like a princess even though she knew it was just for a night.
@@annesophie4037 I think people really misinterpret her character. Like she's strong for putting up with all the abuse from the stepfamily all those years. And not letting it bring her down either. And as you said, she finally does something she wants to do for once, sticking up for herself. Ppl think "oh she didn't get herself out of the situation so she's weak and dependant ew" but it was her who took the step to go to the ball. Even with FG's help. It shows that it's okay to accept some help when you need it. That you don't have to go through hardships alone. And that you can one day have the light even if the world seems against you. You just have to keep holding on. 💗 It's a strong message that ppl don't get. The OG cinderella gets more hate than she deserves
@@chenalindelossantos967 yessssss. I like that there's so many lessons from it. Timeless. Choices that we make less to our fate, and we end up where we need to be 💗
Glad you called out the new "Villains Are People Too" humanizing of badguys that's been going on, because it's most certainly there and becoming increasingly the narrative.
Sometimes you crave the obvious villain who revels in villainy, who can ham it up and sing an epic villain song. Cinderella III lets Lady Tremaine go as far back as unwinding clock on Cinderella’s happily ever after because she’s that vindictive.
"The whole [ball] thing is kinda weird and antiquated." Uhhh, balls were at the _height_ of their popularity as the events to go socialize with anyone who was anyone back then. A royal ball back then had the same cultural significance then as ComicCon, Coachella and Burning Man have today. They were far from "antiquated" during the time period this movie takes place in. Then again, I have to wonder... Given the inconsistencies with the other characters usage of the older English dialects and Ella's more modern anacrhonisms, is there a deleted scene somewhere that shows Ella being a modern woman who somehow got trapped in this time period? That would explain just so SO much.

I thought of a type of Cinderella movie: Cinderella vs Zombies. You have to admit it’s an interesting idea for a movie and would be cool to see Cinderella, the Prince, and her stepfamily having to fight off a zombie apocalypse accidentally caused by the fairy godmother’s magic. The fairy godmother attempts to bring back Cinderella’s parents to life for just one day which is their daughter’s wedding and then everything goes down hill from there. You have birds and mice holding up crosshair targets for the survivors to kill the zombies, people shoving dynamite into pumpkins and launching them as explosives, and so on.
there’s a bunch of cinderella story movies out there from the past couple years and tbh they’re not all bad but this new version is definitely milking it
Yeah, but that one's from a few years back and at least pulls the modern "twist" on it. And it's got dancing so it's kinda fun. (honestly, I liked that one and the one with Hillary Duff in it too). But there was a fairly recent Christmas version of the Cinderella story that was just awful. So. Yeah I don't know why they keep doing this.
Tbh most of them aren’t even that good, some are just liked because of the nostalgia. This movie was not as bad as some of those other remakes, at least it doesn’t take itself seriously

Ella from Ella Enchanted was a version of Cinderella who _was cursed and could not disobey any order given to her_ and somehow she is more empowered than this Cinderella
I’m really sick of movies and the media shaming feminine qualities. Empowering women doesn’t mean turning women into men. It means embracing and valuing femininity! The world can only function well when the yin and yang are balanced.
Right? The world does not need more testosterone than there already is. Fun fact, men are technically more hormonal than women, since the amount of hormones a woman has during her period, is the amount of hormones a man has on a daily basis. So they have literally no right to say "ArE yOu On YoUr PeRiOd?". Also the only reason tablecloths were invented was to cover table legs, because men in the Victorian era were said to get aroused because of table legs. Tablecloths were put so that they wouldn't get a boner during dinner. That should tell them not to say "are you in your period" to a woman because atleast women don't get boners for a fucking table.
Yes and do you know what's ironic? We are at the point where feminists are now being sexist to men, whitch is against the original point of feminism; meaning to be equal I don't see how women being more sexist towards men as "Equal"
@@thecapatalistpropagator_9470 I would say that men and women are *equal* (as in having the same dignity and right to being treated with respect), but, as you rightfully pointed out, they are *not the same* (as in being different biologically and psychologically and having different strong points). And trying to devaluate or shame any of those genders and their characteristics is wrong and unhealthy. We should embrace healthy masculinity *and* healthy femininity. We can be different, but equal; only then can we complete each other and make relationships/families/world whole and better. Sorry for that little rant ^^"
What I didn't understand in the film was all the drama surrounding Cinderella's impediment of entrepreneurship; since medieval times, poor women were seamstresses and marketed their dresses (out of necessity). There is also the fact that Cinderella's stepmother was left by her husband for knowing how to play the piano as a woman, but playing the piano was considered an act of nobility for women, so noble women were obliged to learn to play. Why wouldn't her husband like that? Okay, we're giving you the fiction, maybe the historical facts of the time don't match the fantasy of the movie. However, the queen of the kingdom (the prince's mother) spends her free time practicing martial arts, painting and partying, so why couldn't Cinderella spend her time sewing if she were the queen? Or when the prince assumed the throne, he would give women the right to undertake, but not... ps: sorry for my English.
Exactly! I’m a dress historian and the premise that a medieval woman would be blocked from being a seamstress/owning a dress shop is HILARIOUS to me! Like, of all the “ impossible”job aspirations the filmmakers wanted to give Ella, they just HAD to give her the one field that has historically belonged to women……. That’s as ridiculous as making a movie about an enslaved black person who dreams of working in a cotton field!
I love musicals but couldn't get through this movie. The fact that they didn't make their own songs and just had covers of overused pop songs made it worse than I could have imagined. And I've watched all the other cinderella movies at least once.

It's becoming very cliche these scenarios where for a woman to be strong, she has to act like a "tough guy" like men. Not that movies like that are bad (as long as they're written consistently and not with general exaggerations). The point is that they could develop a film where a really delicate woman with feminine characteristics shows her greatness is a strong and brave girl. That's why I loved Cinderella 2015's live action, because the movie's message is: Courage, kindness is also strength.
Exactly! Like, The OG Cinderella is a strong woman for keeping her principles even if she's faced a lot of challenges in life, Like isn't that enough?? God, society these days are stressing tf out of me
I'd like to point out that it was historically the role of the noblewoman to be the castle seamstress, especially in smaller holds. Cinderella being a seamstress would fit nicely into medieval norms.
@@MattieAMiller I don't think people in this movie had any idea what they were doing. Just insert people with British accents as the snobby royals and everyone else should be a minority and then say that they weren't trying to portray medieval culture anyway.

And also not get held accountable for her behaviour..

@@asterisque9252 I don't think "progressive" is the right word, especially when you think about where some ideas are progressing towards.

1. I dont know how to answer the first thing u said abt the historical accuracy
2. She got that fancy fabric cus they never said her family was in critical financial difficulties, also when she was making her ball gown, she had previously sold her other dress to the prince at the market, and he had paid x3 of the amount she was originally selling it for
3. Her stepfamily dont hate her, and in fact, her stepmother mentioned in the movie that she didnt mistreat her out of spite but because she didnt want Cinderella to go through what the stepmother had to go through when she was young
4. It would actually be different if the prince hadnt worn the headscarf to find Cinderella, cus ig its part of his disguise so people wouldnt recognise him as the prince
She got the money from the Prince when he brought her dress in the marketplace, she spent all that money on fabrics.
I agree with _everything_ that you said, but the "Brandy" version is even _less_ historically accurate (& even an uglier Cinderella) than this version.

I feel like there’s more Cinderella movies than there are the whole Disney princess franchise
True dat
I wish they would focus on other (princess) fairytales than Cinderella or Snow White or even Sleeping Beauty. This is just getting tiring.

Fun fact: Queen Victoria’s white wedding dress became a fashion staple that continues to this day.

I feel the same way when people talk crap about Ariel and how she gave up her voice for a man when in reality Ariel simply wanted to explore man’s world and a handsome prince just happened to be a bonus. And she was only a teen who had never seen the outside world!
This movie is literally shitting on Cinderella's original character and what is percieved as her feminine qualities.

All of Ella’s dresses were horrific which is even more tragic to think about considering she is supposedly a fashion designer
Right?! At least the Disney live action Cinderella had beautiful dresses, but these were just disappointing. Even at the ball so many of the other characters had dresses that were way better than any Ella made. I genuinely don't understand why they made it that way.
The fairy godmother was literally dressed better than Cinderella was.
I like the dresses but for the event... it wasn't extravagant enough or like the era its supposed to be in 🤷♀️
@@luisab3079 True!
1950 Cinderella’s dress was actually silver, but Disney couldn’t sell those dresses because it looked like a wedding dress, and I can’t decide which one I hate more here: the washed out pastel pink or the lilac from the posters.

....don't give them ideas!!!! Anastasia can stay animated and on Broadway (well ... it's not anymore ;-; but it was and it was amazing)
Apparently at this time the ONLY job for women to have was to make clothing then they rewrote history to add feminism to this movie
@@katierasburn9571 well in these cultures this was one of the only jobs exclusively for women aside from taking care of children
I think it's an attempt to even the scale. There are a LOT of movies and stories that have women giving up everything for a man, but the opposite rarely ever happens, so I guess they are trying to spice things up a bit by presenting alternative stories. Not really my thing, but I appreciate variety.

"Leprechaun in space" has a space princess in it, although _her_ name (probably) is not Cinderella.
Original Cinderella: is suffering from abuse and gets by very hard because she is physically and emotionally isolated from real people, but still has the courage to try and get out and explore the world and in the end it pays off and she even finds somebody to connect with and she is finally free of her childhood abuse 😭😭
Amazon Cinderella : is sassy and rude because she’s such a girlboss and ‘oh, fine, I guess I’ll go to the ball, but god forbid that you think I’m like other girls because, uh , I live in an aesthetic basement and I talk to mice’
Spitting facts
Getting invited to a ball would be the best thing that could happen to someone then! You get to mingle with the most important people in society, maybe strike up a friendship or business deal. In fact since she wants to be a seamstress, going to a ball would be the best thing for especially wearing a dress she designs. It just shows how dumb they make her in this just for the sake of “throwing off social norms”. How much more interesting would it have been if she gladly went to the ball and we see her catting with people charming them with her intelligence and wit and ends up getting a noble or rich merchant to give her a loan to start her dress shop?

I think the 40’s joke was less about how old young people think 40 is and more about how short a lifespan at the time could be.
yes exactly
The whole 'Average lifespans back then were like 40' is actually, well it's not WRONG but it's misleading. Yes, if you crunched the average age people in these eras died at, then it would come to about 40. However that average was dragged down by a very high child mortality rate. If you survived childhood, living up to your 60s or older wasn't actually uncommon
@@Kyman102 that's not entire true either. It's kind of more of "if you remove all of the premature deaths from illness, accidents, etc" which is more than childhood... It wasn't uncommon for those same things to kill 20 or 30 year olds either
But literally nothing else seemed to be of that time. We sure of that?
The die-hards could live to older ages 60+ back in, I guess 1600 or something? No idea when this film pretends to be. Problem is indeed child mortality rates skew the balance, it would be better if you compare how many % of the total living population is in age group xx-xx and then compare the numbers.
That movie made me cry so much when I was little
YES! Ever After and the Brandy Cinderella are my 2 favorite adaptations!

The sequels of the Disney films, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time is a decent animated sequel.
If you want one leaning more to historical there is Ever After with Drew Berrymore.

@@Erasureeraser i loved the Cinderella with lily james in it
all i’ve realised from this video is that the step sister are funny as hell
It's not even a hobby, that was a job Expected to be done by women.
It's stereotypical, and ironic...
The original story was collected by the brothers Grimm. Not the Disney version, which is much cleaner than the original story.
All this leads us to believe that according to the film, the princess is a time-traveling alien 😂😂😂
This movie is bad from all angles.

I agree so much- Also gwen was pretty smart and had some innovative ideas yet she wasn't heeded cause she was a giRl
Only Cinderella “remake” or “reimagining” that is acceptable is “Ever After.”
That is all.
Truth! This is the only remake I’ll allow.
And the one with Brandy and Whitney Houston
True. However I will also except Ella Enchanted, provided you acknowledge that the book was better
Eh hem can I please direct your attention to the 2015 remake. Irs literally perfect magical and fantastical
Can I also direct your attention to The Slipper and the Rose, such a beautiful version of Cinderella with a lovely soundtrack too.
I absolutely love that she gots noticed for the dress she DIDN'T make and got turned down hard when she was trying to peddle her own stuff
That's all.
It was her design tbh
If I'm not mistaken coz I haven't watched the movie yet, it is her dress. The fairygod mother was a figment of her imagination.
The TWO things I love: how absolutely DONE James Acaster looks every single time James Corden even speaks and Billy Porter in a very nice dress
That dress honestly looks fabulous! I saw it in the preview and it looks way better than Cindy's
Yea it fits with his skin colour aswell but why is it in the movie so weird they could make a movie with him
That porter dude looks like a creepy weirdo to me. But it's nice dress. Lol
James... JAMES ACASTER IS IN THIS MOVVIE??!!
Those two are my points as well but I also love Idina and she sings so well
I hate how to make this Cinderella "strong and Independent girl boss" they just...
The movie version looks like a wedding dress made by party city.
i cannot get over the silhouette. why is it so... rectangular?
Right I hate the dress the idea is nice but geez 😬
Yes its sooooooo ugly!!!
They just mad she married rich and doesn't have to work
This movie just looks like a terrible high-budget TH-cam skit
With terrible or maybe deliberately terrible acting

@@teabook4 okay cool..thanks for watching.
She wanted to be independent, by fitting into a masculine stereotype of what a woman should do with her life...
Ok
Yeah I was so confused too. I was like she is making dresses what's the problem? it's not like she wanted to be a writer or something weird back then.

Missed the opportunity to address the king as "boomer".
The fact the Evil Stepmother is played by Elsa's VA is just hilarious to me
There’s so much I hate about people misinterpreting Cinderella’s (in most versions of the story) quiet strength as weakness.
I agree. I believe we see things differently. That's also the greatest lesson of Cinderella for me. Getting to decide your fate
@@chenalindelossantos967 yessssss. I like that there's so many lessons from it. Timeless. Choices that we make less to our fate, and we end up where we need to be 💗
I always thought that her getting a fairy godmother was her reward for being so kind in the face of cruelty
So true, as much as I love redemption... sometimes a bad guy is just a bad guy, plain and simple

"The whole [ball] thing is kinda weird and antiquated."
Uhhh, balls were at the _height_ of their popularity as the events to go socialize with anyone who was anyone back then.
And be a far interesting story

We’ve certainly come far from the 1950s Cinderella 😂
Ella from Ella Enchanted was a version of Cinderella who _was cursed and could not disobey any order given to her_ and somehow she is more empowered than this Cinderella

@@hope3290 right they only laughed at her once but that doesnt mean they were mean to her in general
I’m really sick of movies and the media shaming feminine qualities. Empowering women doesn’t mean turning women into men. It means embracing and valuing femininity! The world can only function well when the yin and yang are balanced.
Preach! Seriously. Why is it so wrong to be a girl nowadays?
We are at the point where feminists are now being sexist to men, whitch is against the original point of feminism; meaning to be equal
I don't see how women being more sexist towards men as "Equal"
@My Subliminal Results I'm just pointing out the obvious, I'm fine with gender equality but I don't like how fenisum has become over the years
@@thecapatalistpropagator_9470 I would say that men and women are *equal* (as in having the same dignity and right to being treated with respect), but, as you rightfully pointed out, they are *not the same* (as in being different biologically and psychologically and having different strong points).
Yes, exactly. I mean, sure if they want to make 'fantasy' historical story, but at least established it and be consistent.
Don't worry! You made a lot of sense!
Exactly! I’m a dress historian and the premise that a medieval woman would be blocked from being a seamstress/owning a dress shop is HILARIOUS to me!

Conclusion: The film's script was written by Twitter activists.

I'd like to point out that it was historically the role of the noblewoman to be the castle seamstress, especially in smaller holds. Cinderella being a seamstress would fit nicely into medieval norms.
