I came here from ESPN @9:15pm, Pacific Coast Time. This is where I heard the news that RFK was gonna be demolished by 2021.
For the first 30yrs of my life our family season tickets sat in section 520, seats 11 and 12, up high and just right of south goal post.
In our family photo album we still have the ticket stubs from the night George Allen lead the Redskins to a victory over the Cowboys and on to Super Bowl VII from RFK.
Well, I can't squeeze all the memories right now. I just remember most the mell of the hot dogs, the good time everyone seemed to be having on cold sunny days, the guy who used to sell the Game Day Programs in front of the Armory, "Programs!! Programs!!"
Wait, I do have one memory I want to mention...
In the early 70's after the games the Skins would trickle out from the stadium to their cars parked in a lot beside the stadium. My dad let me and my little brother hang around out there and one day us and some other kids were throwing a football around. I was chasing a long pass and I bumped into and fell down and looked up and saw the reddest head of hair I'd ever seen, Sonny Jurgensen. Sonny just looked down at me, teeth showing but, barely a grin. We looked at each other and before I knew it my Dad was there. He and Sonny shook hands and the next thing I remember my Dad and Sonny and the other guys my Dad was with were having a drink together.
    Different time, different place.
    Goodbye old friend.

My family was section 525 seats 8,9,10,11; my parents got the seats for the expanding family(had tickets when it opened...rare for a young black couple) with my dad carrying my younger brother into RFK as a small boy. At this game my sister and I( brother in Boston) got on the field and I took home a piece of the field and planted it in my yard.
Sooo many memories that have stuck and will always make me smile.

Everyone knew each other in our section, sharing beers and snuck in booze. It really did feel like family and old friends. The problem with most new sports stadia (in all sports) is that they're not really built for sports fans anymore.
They're built more like shopping malls, with all the shiny extracurricular bells and whistles geared towards a different audience than actual sports fans.
What do you really need as a sports fan?
A good seat with great sightlines, reasonably priced food, and cheap, plentiful beer. Good luck getting any of those things at modern major league sports stadiums nowadays.
You're paying higher prices and getting less of the things you really want.

This 1996 Redskins squad started out the season really well at 7-1 but only won 2 more games after that to finish 9-7, becoming the first team in NFL history to start 7-1 & miss the playoffs. What better way to say goodbye to RFK than with a good old ass whooping of the Cowboys, although they were resting most of their starters since they had already clinched the division.

As a Cowboys fan, I miss the old NFC East Stadiums. There was just something special about those old stadiums, Texas Stadium will always be remembered as the home of the Cowboys, RFK the Redskins, Veteran’s Stadium for the Eagles, and Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands for the Giants. Those stadiums were REAL home field advantage. It didn’t matter how bad those teams were, simply put, it was hard to win in Texas Stadium, as much as it was hard to win in RFK, it was difficult to win in Veterans Stadium, and in the Meadowlands, the Giants were just a different team up there (although the Giants were a better team on the road in the playoffs).

This was kind of an awkward farewell game - for most of the season it looked like this game would decide the NFC East title but the Redskins collapsed after a 7-1 start and were out of the playoffs while their hated rivals had clinched the division. So this game, which was looking like a blockbuster matchup, ended up being a glorified preseason game that meant nothing to either team. The celebration of RFK Stadium was tempered by the home team having lost six of seven, the Cowboys having already beaten them out for the division, and Dallas playing their second and third-string players.

And as of 2021, the stadium still hasn't been demolished.
Abandoned and the stadium still have electrical power costing $3million per year!
    UNBELIEVABLE!!
But stadium is finally due for demolition later this year... after 25 years 🤦

Im 25 so i never experienced RFK when it comes to football. But looking at this video i see what the DMV was when the team was respectable and the area wasnt so transient. I grew up when the skins were awful so i gravitated towards the cowboys (like a lot of others my age lol) Its a shame how far the franchise has fallen. 11-1 in the playoffs at rfk to zero playoff wins at fedex… Damn.

Thou shalt hate thy Cowboys always!
Let's hope things get better soon now that the Redskins have new ownership.

@@lewnwdc aye man like i said im 25. people in my age group never saw the skins when they were good. blame dan for dividing the dmv so much. If the product was better throughout his tenure, Fedex field wouldnt have been half filled on sundays.
