I’m gonna travel by this train in the next two weeks. It’s good to see they have the dining car again after it was canceled for around 2 years due to the covid situation. I did this trip around 8 years ago but a later train, it was very enjoyable apart from two things. Terrible diesel fumes inside the carriage while standing in the station and the toilets were grim,. From this video the trains look much improved and I hope to do it again one day.
Oh yeah it was surprisingly good!! The toilets stayed fine all the time (they cleaned a lot!!) and no diesel smell at all.

We definitely want to try 2nd class when we next make the trip! Would be so good to compare, and I doubt we'll get any less sleep than in 1st 😂😂

Try taking the later Specisl Express, train number 13 and it'll pass through the mountains and Thailands longest tunnel in the day light early morning. But no food on that train yet.

U can use the underground walkway of the mrt station to cross the busy road to the train station. This is why the tuk tuk drop u here so u can use the subway crossing

That's the 2nd class train and imho it isn't really bad. The 1st class train I ever traveled with is very similarly cozy except the more privacy.

This looks like a great way to travel. Did everyone bring their suitcases into their beds for safety or is it safe to leave them under the lower bunk?
I actually think it’s super safe! But there is enough space in the bed to keep your ‘daybag’ and it’s also handy because it’s easy to take stuff.

I would definitely bring my backpack with any valuables (laptop, passport, money) into the bunk with me but was hoping my bigger case with just clothes/shoes/etc could stay on the floor. Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom for at least 700 years. Some time the city was independent, but most of the time the City was a vassal state of various Burmese dynasties even right through the reign of King Rama I. When the British began to subjugate Burma and eventually abolished the Burmese King, exiling him to British India during King Rama IV reign, Chiang Mai was independent again but within a few decades, Chiang Mai King saw that Siam was beginning to exert influence to the North, the King decided to submit and even sent his daughter to become King Rama V's concubine. When Chiang Mai king died, King Rama V decided not to appoint a new king but put Chiang Mai directly under Bangkok's rule, sending a governor to govern Chiang Mai since then. Chiang Mai has it all, old town with several important temples, Wat Prathat on Doi Suthep within 20 km from the city center and at the foot of Doi Suthep, there is Chiang Mai University, one of the four regional public universities in Thailand. The others are Khon Kaen in the Northeast and Songkhla in the South. All four regional universities have all traditional faculties including Medicine and Engineering. There is an going project to propose Chiang Mai's old town as Unesco Heritage within this decade.

We booked through 12goasia, so yes you can book the tickets beforehand. I actually really recommend to do so!

i like to travel in train or car to admire the surroundings, stop here and there to immerse in local culture. but traveling by night... no stops... is comfortable but loses the purpose of traveling by land. if the plan is to don't see anything and don't stop, isn't better the airplane? is it recommended to travel by train during day maybe making some stops? is it safe? thank you!
Train is always better then the airplane, with or without stops! Especially if you like nature 😉 during the day it will be fine as well! Thailand is safe

12Go Asia is our go to for tickets! We had to pick them up 2 hours before I think, or even less. Works perfect 😃
